  • just finished On a Cold Road, and knew almost nothing of the Rheostatics. I've enjoyed Bidini on radio and in the Post, but the book has opened the music to me--which is quite an odd process, when you think about it.

  • love the song. the band. play this one live all the time. hope i dont get sued

  • Classic tune. The Rheostatics are one of the most underrated Canadian bands.

  • Martin was the reluctant front mand but he was brilliant in the role

  • this song hooked me years ago! great band!

  • @acerb45666555 This song is my favourite too.I`ve been a fan for years but sadly I don`t think I will eve see them play live as I dont think they tour Germany at all.

  • I have never been to Canada but our CD was produced by Lewis Melville who the Rheostatics named an album after and, he introduced me to the Rheos and thank God he did! Thank for the upload excellent stuff

  • His voice kind of reminds me of some earlier Bowie.

  • On a somewhat unrelated note, Body Count didn't release their first record until the next year (1992), although they did appear on Ice-T's OG album.

  • one of the best songs I have ever heard, especially live. They are so great live. And the nicest band I ever met.

  • anyone have a version of this with non-messed up audio?

  • god i fucking love this song, i cant lie, im listning to in right now, while making this comment, this is the 6th time in a row ive played it, will probly stop at 8

  • 1:46 , scary

  • So Canadian.

  • ? how do you mean?

  • haha i haven't herd this one in ages..nice

  • Also my first forray into the Rheos. Extremely unique and 100% Canadiana at it's best!

    Coincidentally, i'm reading Bidini's "57 1/2gigs" book.

  • Man, Martin Tielli is so young here.

  • My second favorite two minutes in all of rock n' roll.

  • is the song supposed to sound broken up?

  • Nope. It's an audio problem. Too bad,it's such an amazing song. dammit!

  • This is THE song that made me a Rheo-fanatic. Being from Detroit, the only "alternative" station was from Canada, and there's a percentage of Canadian music they were required to play, so I heard all about The Hip, Crash Test Dummies, and too many Naked Ladies. Rheostatics stood out from the get-go, and I can always find amazing discoveries in their music.

    I always will.

  • i never knew that about Detroit getting Canadian stations, that's pretty neat! i guess 'cause you guys are so close to Toronto Ont...i'm canadian from the west so grew up watching these guys on MuchMusic in early 90's :D this & 'aliens 1988' totally got me into them!

  • dude detroit is across the river from windsor

  • @bigmayo111

I grew up in Windsor and agree with you on the Rheos and the too much Ladies. We grew up on the soul music coming out of Detroit and that was one of the reasons my parents moved to Windsor as they were Northern Soul buffs in the UK. You can go into the shittiest pub in Windsor to this day and still find the Four Tops or Al Green on the juke box. That is lasting stuff. The Rheos are small market stuff that have a strong following.

  • @bigmayo111 I dig the Rheostatics. classic song!

  • Most bestest music makers ever!

This video was my introduction to the band and made me an instant fan--have all their CDs and have seen them live a few times.

I am now living in a cave, awaiting their reunion tour.

  • I could join you in that cave! This video made me happy as hell when I was younger. I remember Martin wore that jacket when they opened for the Barenaked Ladies (!) in London in 1991 and I was in love. (Omg I'm old.)

  • Hmmm... I think we're on to something here.

Kind of like "Desert Island Discs".

i.e. if one was to go into isolation in a cave and await their return, just what albums would one take? Let's be reasonable here, and allow three albums each and they don't necessarily have to be Rheo albums.

  • No you're not Pet. it's just seeing things like this that reminds us that we got a little more life experience than others.

  • This was their last song of their last show ever. Sigh.

  • but did it ever end beautifully. I'll never forget the way the lights shone on Martin as he said "he died"

  • i find these mofos infinitely preferable to the tragically hip.not that there's any connection between them, other than being canadian.

  • If you have 3000 CDs they should *all* be Rheostatics albums. :-)

  • This makes two contributions to Youtube, both commenting on Rheostatics' videos. Full disclosure: my CD collectilon runs 3000 large, yet I've none from the aforementioned band. But everytime I hear a track of theirs, I realize the depth of that absence.

  • thankyou THANKyou for digging up and posting this gem.

true story--i showed my schoolteacher friend the lyrics to this song--he burst into tears.

  • good lord thank you for posting this

    -a loser
