I think that Viserys himself might have seen it as a defiant last stand; he looked truly surprised when Dany told him Drogo said yes. I think he logically knew he was unlikely to survive entering that tent, and wanted to die defiantly rather than running away like he had been all his life, but got cold feet anyway when it really hit home that he was going to die

@DarthKaMar Viseris was, at best, a sad fool with delusions of grandure. That and really wasn't a dragon. A real Tergerien (like Deny) wouldn't be harmed by any heat so I guess she simply stopped thinking of him as a real brother. Still you gotta feel a bit sad for the poor fool. He just didn't know when to shut the hell up about that damn crown he would never see anyway.

@DarthKaMar Interesting way to put it, but it was revealed that they were whisked away during the battle. There were definitely still some Targaryen supporters at that time, so it would have been easy to find someone to take care of them for a while. Viserys probably didn't do anything at all, and Dany never loved her brother.

@jb65093 It probably isn't 100% gold (if it's even gold at all), considering where the Dothraki live and what you normally have to do in order to acquire (and craft) gold (and the Dothraki doesn't exactly plunder cities like King's Landing)... but the scene looks so good either way, so... just enjoy it!

In the book its explained, Dothraki do not buy or sell, they receive gifts and give gifts in return. Viserys believed he sold Dany and Khal had not paid for her, but Drogo say Dany as a gift and would have given Viserys a gift (an army) in return but only in the Khals own time. Viserys has told this repeatedly by both Illyrio and Jorah but he was too stupid and impatient to listen.

@hazeddon dragonman explained it well, but it's actually a bit worse: Illyrio said that Drogo was going to invade as soon as his son was born (cause he's prophecized to be the Dothraki supreme warrior) so all Viserys had to do was wait a bit more and Drogo would've given him what he wanted.

Viserys was a powerless king who acted like a king so Drogo tolerated him even if he didn't like his other traits, the problem was he acted like a king because he was stupid not because he had iron discipline and strength of will. @SilverAuditore I think it was explained in the book that the dothraki generally understand deals/bargains like these differently than western people... drogo considered dany to be a gift from viserys; he could give him something in return (as in the army) but there was no particular date set or anything... both ilyrio and mormont explained this to viserys but he just wouldn´t listen :)
