I think it's too general really, and you need to use more technical terms instead of "autopilot" and "free space". I gather that from your explanation, the gist of halting automatic thoughts is to free your mind by letting it pass but really, if you're on a plane and you feel the turbulance, it's more than just "observing, viewing, and letting pass" that you'll need to prevent you from over-hyping the situation.
Thank You Dr. Cloud, I really appreciated this "biblically based concept" Our God is an awesome GOD!...My My we are indeed fearfully & wonderfully made..please keep the vids coming..God Bless you My Dear Brother♥!!
I just came upon these helpful "LPV's" ! God bless you for caring enough about people to want to help us short of attending a conference. I have benefitted so much from the books and DVDs you and Dr Townsend have made. They have literally been life-changing for me!
i like this kind of metaphysical analysis. Your solution sounds very reasonable but it actually needs a powerfull determination especially if thoughts are associated with high emotions like a song or a scent that trigers memories of a beloved person follwed by thoughts and then feelings and what happened is that your brain opened all those stored files of that person trying to bring you back to same exact state and then you start hurting again. can you give us more techniques to deal with that?
Interesting video. Have you noticed that the "automatic" thought, and those that come from you(resoning), they have simular emotions attached to them, but when you look closer, they are definitively different. Hatred and just anger are simular, but different in taste, and in logic. pure joy and lust are simular, but really taste different, and the logic is different also. I have found that all emotions have an evil twin, and I am sure this is what the church call sinn, buddhist call "ignorance".
regarding productions value, all you need is a tripod...good talk because 1) short 2) reveals interesting research nugget and 3) you provide a tip....which is what Zen Buddhism teaches...observe your mind and label your thoughts rather than attach yourself to them. labeling helps to see where your mind is and the kinds of thoughts that predominate.
I am really happy to hear you are going to do these videos, Dr. Cloud! I am studying to get my M.S. in Counseling at a secular university, and I often check these little "internet blurbs" from you and Dr. Townsend to check out how what I'm learning lines up with the Bible. You guys are really good at merging psychology and theology. My life has really benefited from your ministry and teaching, even though you've never even met me! Please keep doing these!
Good, good, good stuff....I'm going to follow you cuz you make sense and are to the point. I'm going to listen again.....I really want what you are sharing. Thanx for your generousity. And God Bless.....
Yes, this is very helpful!!! Appreciate your work immensely. Saw you at the 2011 Leadership Summit and took copious notes then! Please continue to share and educate via this venue!!! Thank you thank you!
This is very helpful....sometimes when we get stuck, we just can't think of these things on our own....eventhough they may at times seem like common sense but we definately don't apply these tips consistenly! Thanks for thinking about others!!!
It makes sense and I was thinking about trying this not only for myself, but with my 13 year old son with Autism and many anxiety issues who consistently grabs the bird and strangles it. What I need is more direction on helping him not grab the bird or techniques for what to do when said bird is grabbed. I'd like to know more practically what it looks like and how to direct my son. He tends to obsess more on his thoughts once they enter his mind and won’t let them go.
This is great! I would like to learn more about how this relates to the Renewed Mind and confronting all those negatives. BUT.... Great tip and I will give it a shot. Now to find the handcuffs to stop myself from confronting those thoughts... (;
This is the first thing I've seen on here by you and I will definately watch it again and look for more things that I can use. I am stuck with thoughts like these so I will try this.
This is good. The hard part, I suppose, is stopping yourself from grabbing hold of the worst-case thinking because once you do that, it can be very hard to undo it and let it fly away.
I like this idea. I would like to hear more views that you have on things like this. This is a good way to indentify what those automatic thoughts are and how they can affect the way we live our lives.
What a great introduction to CBT!

thanks, your videos are nice!
ps you should put some more tags on your videos to get more views.
for example, this video you should tag words like "happiness, positive thinking, negative thoughts, social anxiety ,etc

Hi Henry! Very well stated.
Actually it helped me understand Katie's thoughts about it.
I think I won't come back to tell you if your way -get through it like a bird- is working, sniff sniff ;)

I like this to 50%... the other 50% is reserved because you make it sound more simple then it is, in my opinion.
