Despite claims otherwise, Marland tended to neglect and waste ATWT's veterans. For example, Dr. John Dixon, pivotal under the Dobsons, largely lost his villainous qualities under Marland and was relegated to a dead-end marriage with Lucinda. Aside perhaps from the Scott Eldridge "story," Marland gave Lisa nothing substantial to do in eight years. And most glaringly, Ellen Stewart had nothing resembling a story under Marland, who preferred to feature teenyboppers milling at the Snyder pond.
@en9nui John's marriage to Lucinda was hardly dead end. For the 1st time he was married to someone who loved him in spite of the things he'd done and he did the same with her. Their story even had a powerful but sad collapse with stuff Lucinda did in secret because she couldn't accept John's close relationship with his son Duke..
@2004mojo Marland's overreliance on dredging up previously unheard from grown children--e.g. Sabrina, Lien, Scott, and here Duke--reflected a creative vacuum, a seeming inability to generate natural conflicts using extant characters. What was achieved by introducing Lucinda's adopted daughter Bianca? And three--enough already?-- half-siblings (Royce-- another psycho!--Neal, and Samantha) landed on the Walsh doorstep. Speaking of psychos, remember that nutty nanny who kidnaped baby Christopher?
Sadly this is a clip that needs the soundtrack. A very wonderful song from an Andrew Lloyd Webber show was used during the clips and made them even more powerful!

This is a shame that they killed the audio. Doug Marland deserved a tribute and I'm sure the song had little to do with it.

Bring back the days between 1985 and 1998!!
