  • Let's just be completely realistic right up front.........Mariah was FINE AS ALL HELL "back in the day"......and she still is; she was just a "baby" in this clip. With all that being said......there's SO much more to Mariah Carey than physical beauty, as we all should fully realize. She has been the premiere female vocalist of the past 2 decades (in my ever-so-humble opinion), and her recent blessing of motherhood has finally given her the happiness that she has given the world for so long.

  • I miss this mariah

  • she is prettier before!!!!! thin

  • Ahh yes the humble Mariah

  • she seems normall in this

  • the interviewer fits so many sterotypes its gross

  • @celena33212 haha have u seen her father?...probably not because he is definitely a black man. Trust me, I've seen a photograph of him.

  • same mariah

  • listen shes half african american and venezuelan american shes half irish american thats allshe is.

  • This women here changed the game for the next 30 years and she still looks as young as 1990

  • Not that it should matter, but she did say that her dad's grandmother was Venezuelan. Just like my dad's grandmother is white. Her dad is a black man and her mom is white.

  • She is one of the sweetest singers lasting forever..........

  • I actually thought she said(not in this interview) her father was black FROM Venezuela. There are lots of black people in South America!

  • lol actually she's not really half black. because her dad is half black and hispanic and her mom is white

  • i personally think she looks like 35-40% black if you look at facial features, only that she has light pigment traits

  • he's a GREAT host! wow

  • Mariah hasn't changed :))

  • she seems real shy in this interview

  • Loose faith that she wouldn´t make it - She was 19!!!!. Year after High School. It wasn´t many years struggling - she worked hard but come on.

  • She used to look a lot whiter when she was younger. She also was a lot thinner.

  • Mariah isn't multiracial. She is Slovenian.

  • @sexyrexysexy No. Her father is African-American and Venezuelan, and her mother is Irish.

  • @sexyrexysexy WRONG!! She said in multiple interviews..her mother is white, her Dad was mixed with black and Venezuelan.

  • @RTDavis0503 I have since found out that she is Jewish from a reliable source.

  • Destined for success

  • the best was yet to come for sure! :)

  • I loooooooooovvvvveee her!

  • Gorgeous as hell....natural beauty, take a look and Learn girls

  • I love the vintage Mariah stuff. I'm not too into the new stuff she makes. It's all material that can be done by anyone, it seems. But NO ONE can do the vintage Mariah, except Mariah. The reason we never hear people doing karaoke or covers of Vision of Love is because no one CAN do it. Only her. I wish she would get back to the glistening ballads of yesteryear. "Touch my body", blech.....

  • Ill talk clearly. There are no races. There are only people. People create what other people percieve to be real. People everywhere unclear and struggling to illuminate what is right here. Us.

  • 4::29, Mariah don't know what that makes her??? she says "Oh Human!" I know she didn't fill out her application to become a singer as Black and White; She had to check only one box that asked what Race she is! And let me guess.... she checked the "White" box!!! LMAO

  • @ka2hmony There's no "application" to become a singer. And I've never known Mariah to deny being half-Black. She's always talked very openly (as in this interview) about being from an interracial family.

  • @retrorhythms even if this was truth, twenty-one years ago, jet magazine did an article on mariah "why she looks white, but sings black"... it's clear that she grasp her black side vs the white... why do you think she went in a different direction with the 'butterfly' album as she was divorcing tommy's lame ass... and, it started two years prior with the 'fanasty remix' onto the 'always be my baby remix'...

  • @shylosworld78Well, your original comment sounded like you were saying she would deny being half-Black. Butl now it sounds like we're saying the same thing. I would argue that her different direction started even before the 'Always Be My Baby' remix...what about the 'Fantasy' remix?!

  • @retrorhythms i think you did overlook the part where i said that it started with the remix to fanasty, then onto the remix of 'always be my baby' featuring xscape... this is when she first started working with jd.

  • @retrorhythms she's not "HALF BLACK", she's a quadroon for god's sake! thats a difference, because thats a slap in the face to all biracials called niggers, a word that mariah never heard!

  • @shylosworld78 you do realise she was originally labelled as a white artists by tommy simply because white artists inevitably sold more... that wasnt her fault it was her labels. She always expresses the fact shes biracial..

  • @retrorhythms She also Hispanic because her father was part Venezuelan. She said that her father is Venezuelan and black.

  • @ka2hmony Well, from what I know, at Lopez Tonight show, she said she was black when asked what race she was. So, you guess wrong

  • @ka2hmony and she married nick cannon, honey. mariah said, "human" because the question is, in all honesty, a human being and her race should be irrelevant. the question should never exist anywhere, anyway.

  • @ka2hmony Nope she checked the "Black" box just like her older brother and sister.

  • She held herself pretty well for a 20 year old.

  • They're flirting! I love it

  • @All13K HE's flirting! :-)

  • Donnie Simpson was so cool man, I always enjoyed hearing his smooth voice and watching great BET music video's. Speaking of which, how funny is it that I'm a white dude but BET was the first channel I would turn to for Music my whole life lol. I love many genre's and types of music, but Black folks have certainly given a gift to the world in their musical expression and Love for it. GodBless peace.

  • @Brahmanfire Yeah, I really feel Donnie Simpson wasn't appreciated enough for his persona. Very classy individual with an ultra smooth delivery. I know he had to have a lot of female fans out there even without being a performer. But it's also nice to know he had fans on all sides of the spectrum, as well as the music of urban Blacks who toiled through the years vying for a place in world of sounds. God bless you for your support!! Keep listening. . . ♦

  • Mariah always stay sexy :)

  • She's so mature for her age. I thought this of her 21 years ago when i was 11 and still now that i'm a grown woman.

  • Can't hear Donnie at all!

  • Donnie is a great looking guy !

  • @bizz4ethix What do you mean look at british "yuck"? Thats pretty rude and racist. And yes I have seen alot of beautiful white people.

  • Don't be ignorant. My points is that the way we think of white and black and brown and yellow and red

causes more racism and anti-humanism/ As humans we are supposed to mix with all humans and that is obviously true because the more mixed you are the more beautiful...So we need to get rid of these national borders and breed with who we want and have beautiful children, generations of human diversity. One day we will say humans are so beautiful. And that is real.

  • @bizz4ethix get with some ofwhat ur saying but some ,true ....some not so much...

  • @bizz4ethix damn, wish I could give you a thumbz up more than once ;). I"m a white male and 32 yrs. old but I must say I love women of ALL types across this planet, I have always felt particularly drawn to the beautiful skin tone of darker women and I think it's a beautiful thing for people of all races and types who come together in Love. Period. Racists and naysayers are fools. :)))

  • @bizz4ethix I don't have a problem with different races getting together for whatever reason, marriage included. However, I am not for forced integration for any reason. Whether the children are offsrping of mono-racial people or of mixed people, they are and will always be equally beautiful. , as Jennifer Hudson is just as beautiful as Taylor Swift, as Mariah Carey, as Kelly Rowland, etc. . . Also, I am definitely in favor of keeping boarders. Erasing them would truly be disastrous.

  • I love the awkward bit at the end where they're just not taking to each other whilst the music plays out hahahaha.

  • proof she was born in 1990!

  • @g3tup989 1970*

  • @g3tup989 Yep! Also, her twins' birth certificates were just released (which include her birthday on them) proving 1970.

  • who gives a shit what is her background. She is a beautiful human woman. And. proof that we are most Beautiful together. Seriously, have you seen such beauty when people that look the same breed. I mean look at British, yuck! Look at Tennessee, yuck. Now, look at Brazil. Wow!

  • @bizz4ethix I'm brazilian and I loved what you said! hahaha Thanks!

    LAMBS FROM BRAZIL \o/\o/\o/\o/ yaaay!

  • @bizz4ethix Have you ever been here or are you basing your opinion on a few British people that you've seen on TV? I have friends who've been to America and came back saying most people were fat and ugly, its just they only let beautiful people on TV. By the way, being multiracial here is very common and there are more cultures, races and nationalities here than I can name. No one cares if you're half black, half white here. Mariah noticed it herself and said it on Ian Wright show in 99.

  • @sfogfgokjsogjsdfks this person is a coward and a liar no channel and what this person said is totally ignorant. If, no one cares about being half black and half white, why did Sade's parents separate? And to say that one country that was the biggest slave trader in history is not racist, is a complete lie. My point is that there is only one race, the human race. And the more we breed differences, the more we look similar and the more we all become gorgeous humans..that is what i want.

  • Her demo taype should be released

  • @lish2014 That would be cool!

  • @lish2014 Try it! We would be so grateful!

  • @lish2014 Most of it was. A lot of her first album was her demo, but not all of it.

  • @NakitaBenjamin2c

for some reason, your comment is said to be for me:

i said her DAD'S MOTHER was African-American (from Alabama, I think); and his father was Venezuelan. Her father was of African American/Latin descent.

  • SEVEN voal octave range..!

  • Good interview but good god those clothes and hairdo's are awful. The host looks like he's wearing a sleeping bag.

  • he sounds sooo creepy "youre beautifull" hahaa

  • @heyxxmichelle Baby that's Donnie Simpson. He was the smoothest cat on TV at the time.

  • She looked so classy here! And her natural speaking voice is so sexy like a freaking porn star.

  • what i h8 about most pop artist talking voice is that it's always rly soft & it seems kinda fake, but her voice is just the way it is

  • God bless Brenda K. Starr , every artist needs a friend like that in the industry because most people in the industry are not only threatened but they hate on other's talent & don't want to see u shine, u REALLY have to get your own, because the minute people find out that you have star potential they clam up & try to hold u back. Brenda will be blessed & I hope Mariah has been accordingly grateful because that's a rarity.

  • 7th octave vocal range wow, too bad she doesnt have it anymore.

  • @shangoshun She still does have that range. Her chest voice just sounds different today because she developed nodules on her vocal cords due to oversinging and alcohol. But she still has the full range of notes, just not as clear or controlled as before. She hits one of her highest notes in "I Want To Know What Love Is" from her last album and she's done it live several times as well.

  • This was BET? Wow... It sure has hit rock bottom since...

  • more like 4 number ones songs

  • Haha I seriously wish I would have been alive to follow her whole career... Wow....

  • whats the last song at the end of the video called

  • @GellyRolll "There's Got to Be a Way." Check out the second segment for more of that.

  • a good looking white/black woman singing love songs, what could go wrong?

  • A good example of someone who's celebrity went to their head.............in a very bad way. I loved her back then. Saw her on Ellen recently, and couldn't even watch all the way through, it was so sad and pathetic.

  • I'm so fascinating by Early vintage Mariah, she was so mature, and classy. Plus her voice at that time was gold. And the interview was great, the questions were good and not stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • @8maryka learn how to spell

  • @8maryka mariah never was a slut

  • @brendalovesmariah it´s my opinion and many people think the same... but like I said I loved her in 90´s

  • @8maryka Agreed

  • @8maryka totally agree

  • man 20 years old? she looks more poised there than she does today! o.O and this host is very good!! Like respectable, and articulate!! oh the 90's!

  • @babygurl59033 Donnie Simpson was the best!!

  • @MissKarls24

    She isn't normal, or Fat

    shes Pregnant

  • lol you can tell shes nervous because she wont move around like she does now

  • @PugSleasy Me too...

  • i love the way she says mhm and uh-huh

  • This is the Mariah i miss and loved. Sweet, down to earth, humble. The Mariah of today is not the shadow from the Mariah 20 years ago. I gues success changes people. sigh

I still love her music and will continue to support her but this is the Mariah I fell in love with 20 years ago.

  • @PugSleasy So do I. She was so humble, shy, and of course, BEAUTIFUL!! Mariah Carey was by far the best vocalist in the 1990's!!

  • THAT host was like in love with mariah lol look at his face!!! lol

  • Thanks for sharing!!!!

She answered the questions so naturally ... but she seemed a bit serious to me!!

    Luv u MC!!!

  • This is the hottest she ever was. Now she's kinda fat.

  • She looks so shy and sometimes kind off bored, LOL. But I guess she wasn't use to giving interviews if this was her first one:D

  • u can tell the host is feeling mariah, he lookin at her like "damm... she fin" :)

  • @333hoodboy i know right lol!

  • they said 7 octaves to make her seem like she was supernatural...like, an angel. it worked, because shes now a legend.

  • Her speaking voice hasn't changed a bit!

  • he has pretty eyes.

  • @PugSleasy yeah lol there isnt really a pre-tommy mottola mariah lol

  • Wow they werent lying about grooming her for huge success!!! I LOVE MARIAH!

  • @PugSleasy there is no such thing as Tommy discovered her!

  • LOL her hair is a hot mess....as if she just came directly from a video shoot with the wind machine blowing her off the set, lol

    I LOVE MIMI TO BITS!

  • @PugSleasy You mean before she was married to him? She was already under his wing here!

  • someone here said that she was probably shy and nervous in this interview. that may be true. but i liked her style then. she had a way about her that could have developed into something very classy and elegant over the years, even with her musical style just as it is. for years, she's had a sex kitten quality that kind of overshadows her talent. developing the persona in this clip would have served her better in the long-run. just my opinion.

  • she looks nervous

  • She's so pretty! I love her hair. Gorgeous.

  • wow this is really old but mariah looks beautiful

  • she dont look 20...maybe its the hair and the outfit

  • OMG she looks so young and pretty in that time

  • She acts like such a diva now compared to how humble she is here. Either way she is so talented, LOVE her voice.

  • haha mariah's funy "that makes me human" .. yur american huny ^_^

  • prisoner is the best song, on the album!

  • She was so shy....a whole nother mariah....frm the 1 now...

  • mariah is white black and latin...all she needs is asian and she'll basically be the world into one.

  • STLEO1 Your're so wrong. The father's seed determs wether the baby is male or female. The colour of the skin can be a mixture of both parents or the skin colour of one of the parents. There are millions of children with a WHITE FATHER and a BLACK MOTHER that have a brown skin colour.

Even mixed race parents with a brown skin colour can have a white blonde child! Marcia (& Millie) Biggs are the prove for that.

  • she talks black now and looks more black now? well she tricks alot look at her cd's

  • @sgsfdgfsdfsdfsddf I guess she doesnt talk black but she talks like someone who is faking talking more gangster or brooklyn

  • @sgsfdgfsdfsdfsddf I think she talks the same as she do now.

  • @sgsfdgfsdfsdfsddf She was trying to play more to the white side

  • @STLEO1 I disagree because her skin color is "white" now she just tans to make people think shes blacker

  • @sgsfdgfsdfsdfsddf What the fuck is talking black? that sounds so STUPID

  • OMG! Is she wearing flats!?

  • I thought her mother was black and her father was white...because of the glitter movie...now i know that that movie isnt actually herlife..i guess

  • I think it's very nice that after he asks what colour she is, he says she's beautiful. It must have been pleasant to hear that if you are insecure about your race like mariah

  • why is it so important?black or white?i love mariah carey from the first moment..

  • Why that stupid black/white question? Although Mariah's parents are black & white, she is clearly white. Skin colour is not important (to me), the music is!!! Though I'm not so much of a fan of her music today, I really loved her between 1990-1998.

  • um but this is the United States of America in which the one drop rule was implemented during slavery. And yes slavery is over but the rule is still subconciously implemented here in america. Now this doesnt mean that I agree with it... im just stating a fact. No matter how light u are or if u have more european features, ur still considered black... i.e Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Halle Berry, Faith Evans, Tamia, Drake, Shemar Moore. Pres. Barack Obama

  • Yes, but Alicia, Halle,... have a brown skin colour. Mariah has the same colour as her mother, wich is pink (white).

  • @laptopsiepopsie Listen to the interview she is not white sehhhhhh

  • @laptopsiepopsie If her father is black she black because the father deliver the seed not the mother so if her father was white she would be white

  • @STLEO1 NO she is bi-racial. which she has said all the time. black father and a white mother, means she is partically two races. no one over the other. your meaning is somthing from the 50s

  • @xXxmissemmaxXx i bet anything her birth certificate says "african american"

  • Aw the early 90s BET. Look at the host! Mind you, he is not speaking that slang shit like the mofos today.

  • @deep71483 Donnie was my favorite VJ he kept it real. I grew up watching Video Soul as a little girl in the 80's and early 90's. I love the leather couch.

  • damn these were some real interviews. there's just chemistry coming them. Donnie had all the ladies creaming!

  • It was made out like CBS tried to cover her multi-racial ethnicity for years but clearly Mariah interviews in 1990 and just comes out with it.

  • love it its cool....

  • He fancies the pants off her lol! and rightly so!

  • 2:13 "you're kidding!"

(in a husky sexy voice) "no, it was incredible"

    lol

  • 7 oct range!! LOL

  • I know! And actually some publications printed at the time "8-octave range"! My vocal coach and I used to joke about that -- anyone who can sing the whole span of the piano must indeed be a superhuman!!

  • she still sounds the same! Thats so funny!

  • @jojoworld12345 i know right! i think mariahs talking voice stayed the same but her singing voice changed! lol. weird isnt?lol. but , i love mariah!

  • It seems like he has a thing for her!! hehe

  • This is awesome footage!! amazing!! good old 90s!! that man sort of looks high!! lol.. she looks gorgeous - more of a natural look.. love her curly hair!! this is a great interview!! wow, 1990!! i feel old!! those were the days..

  • wow on lopez tonight she said that her mother was irish and her dad was black and her grandmother was venezuelan and just then she said her dad was half black and half venezuelan im confused now lol

  • Well, it must mean that her dad's mom is Venezuelan and his mom black.

  • she said her dad is venezuelan AND black. ^^ There are black people in venezuela.

  • actually her great grand mother was venezuelan !! her dad was african american with a grand mother venezuelan!!! and his parents and grand father were african american from harlem ! so the venezuelan thing is so far away !!

  • I'll listen to what mariah is saying but thanks! :)

  • yes you can listen to her in George lopez show in 2010 !! she actually said what she really is !! before she was so tired saying what her origins are !!!

  • She was not stating orgins. She didn't even mention her dad's mother. Mariah has gone thru a lot over this race thing. She didn't mention her race until she was dubbed another white girl trying to sound black. She pointed out her gospel roots came from her black grandmother. Then shortly added her dad was half black and had a Venezuelan father to account for her appearence. Then stated there was a lot of misprints that her dad was a Black Venezuelan, but it was incorrect he had a black mother

  • so you need to watch the video from george lopez show !!! and you wont talk in vain !!! she said my mother is irish she's like the queen or Ireland yeah mum !!!! and my father is an african american who grew up in Harlem and she said !! her grand mother was venezuelan so my great grand mother was venezuelan !!! so you talk in vain !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so in vain !!!!!!!!!!!!! dont waste your time !! she said so in one video !!!!!

  • I've already seen that video. I'm stating Mariah history of statement I've been reading about her since I was six. She used to be my life I bought ever magazine, book, and recorded ever interview I could. She can say what she wants now but she can't change what she said in the past. How long have you been following her? Because Mariah stated that interview as if she thinks the audience already knows about her background, they should she's been saying 20 years now

  • Lopez Tonight - George Lopez DNA Test [George Lopez is BLACK] just search this video on youtube and dont waste my time anymore !!!!!!!!!!!

  • and a Venezuelan father. Mariah also said for years that she was raise to believe that she was black, Venezuelan, and Irish and to never let anybody tell her she was one thing because all of those races made up who she was. This was back when if you're black you're black was rule and Mariah fought to change this ideal stating bi-racial child she acknowledge all races and not just the dominant one.
