Volodya Visotsky is a legend; he is one of a kind. Every time when I hear his voice it gives me goose bumps and I want to scream and cry at the same time. I am only 28 and not even Russian, but I never stop missing him. Visotsky forever!!!
Yes, I do. I graduated from Russian high school and I currently teach Russian at US university. As a matter of fact we just talked about Visotsky a week ago and I introduced him to the American students.

It think Leonard Cohen still has the voice that could do this song in English true justice. A powerful song needs a powerful voice. Just wonderful!

Or the bell does shake from weeping, weeping gently, weeping deeply,
Or I'm shouting to the horses that they do not run so quickly?
Just a little slower, horses, little slower now!
I pray to you don't hurry along!
But the horses that I got are capricious ones
I can't live to the end, I can't finish my song.
I will let horses drink - the couplet I will sing
For a little bit more I will stand on the brink...

3. Just a little slower, horses, little slower now!
Do not listen to the sharp whip, it is wrong!
But the horses that I got are capricious ones
I can't live to the end, I can't finish my song.
I will let horses drink - the couplet I will sing
For a little bit more I will stand on the brink...
We are here: nobody comes late here to greet the Lord of Heaven -
Then, why do the angels sing with voices so angry and heavy?

2 I will let horses drink - the couplet I will sing
For a little bit more I will stand on the brink...
I will vanish - like a piece of dust by wind I will blown,
In the morning they will drag me in the sleigh through the snow,
O my horses, walk some slower, show a bit of moderation
Just a little bit, prolong my way to final destination!

1. By the edge, near the cliff, at the very, very limit
I am beating at my horses with my arm, a whiplash in it.
I'm not getting enough air - drinking wind, the fog imbibing,
And I scent with deadly rapture: I am dying, I am dying!
Just a little slower, horses, little slower now!
Do not listen to the sharp whip, it is wrong!
But the horses that I got are capricious ones
I can't live to the end, I can't finish my song.

Somebody PLEASE translate this song for me?
This guy thinks the lyrics are terribly important and I would like to know what they mean before I claim it as a "Favorites" on my site.
Thank you very much.

There's a translation in the video description...
...Though translations seem to vary far more than might seem possible if accuracy is to be observed... You might try these for comparison:

Sometimes I think Johnny Cash was someone for americans like Visotsky for us. A little bit.
Nagaevo 3 years ago
Cash wasn't political, though.... Maybe Dylan would be a better comparison?
gina9152007 3 years ago
Yep, you're right.
By the way Cash was a little political, I guess. "Each week we lose a hundred fine young men..."
