a polyrhythm is two different rhythms, in different time signatures, played over one another. in this case he's messing around over a 7/8 beat. i have tried drumming like this before, playing a totally different timing from the metronome, and while it sounds off, eventually adds up. are any of you drummers here? probably could clarify more on this.
The polyrhythms aren't only two rhythms, it could be four different rhythms, look for a drummer called el negro hernandez, hes a pro doing that kind of stuff.
a polyrhythm would be like if youre playing in 4/4 on your hands, but your feet were playing in 5/4. or something like that. a good example is when virgil donati splits paradiddles between his right hand and right foot, then splits double-paradiddles between his left hand and left foot. hard stuff
it does sound uninteresting to be watching an excerpt like this on youtube, but he is playing in time. it wouldnt sound as good if he played it in time. its polyrhythmic.
