Look, pay attention to everything in the film.

The aliens came BACK to RECLAIM the planet, THEY put the machines there.

They PLANNED this attack, to come back to the planet at just the right time.

The tripods are biologically engineered, with human blood keeping them in power, the first were powered with lightning bolts to get them started.

They live in either a very cold or hot climate, as the DNA killed them at the end, BUT..

as the hatch of the fallen tripod opened,

Hmm. maybe they knew humanity would develop, and saw their use of tech and thought this was the right moment to claim the planet and its resources.

Maybe there planet is dying and thats why they planned to come here, as a backup planet, which is why they put the machines there, incase humanity became more evolved than needed and made weapons capable of destroying them. Probably just needed us to make weather modification)
