I love steam. The China QJs look and sound good. But I really prefer our steam more than these. There is a lot out there still that would be nice to see them run again.
American steam power technology came to a halt when?, '45 or so? The Chinese played with it through the '70s at least. It would be interesting to see design differences between this Chinese locomotive vs. American ones.
i can only presume that as the chinese moved to diesel and electric power, they were going to scrap it and some americans stepped in and brought it before the locomotive got cut up.
nice to see them preserved. i wander in 50 years time if an acela will be preserved?
The two locomotives were sold to the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad and shipped to the U.S.A on a barge, then carried by rail via specialized flatcars to Iowa. Pretty cool.
@DaBlackNinja1 When did that take place? Many years ago I heard two stream locos were shipped from a loco factory because US didn't build streams anymore. The following year 1989, the factory ceased the production of stream locos, no stream locos are produced anymore.
I believe they are owned by Iowa Interstate. Or perhaps by the company that owns Iowa Interstate. They will be running short trips from Rock Island October 18-19, 2008. They are scheduled to be pulling a freight from Iowa City to Rock Island on the morning of October 18.
Friends of the 261 provided the cars for the excursion. They were brought to the Quad Cities by the 261 which tripleheaded with the Chinese locomotives the day after I shot this. There are plenty of videos of that trip on Youtube.
Have you guys ever thought about Nuclear powered steam locomotive? Instead of coal in the fire-box, it would be a nuclear reactor in there. That would be nice unless you have a meltdown. =)
Epic click-a-dee clack.
God bless.

It are invadin' yer country bit by bit.
Soon they'll be sending planes to replace yours.
Then the vehicles.
Then they will detonate all the Chinese-American cars and invade and you'll all be like 'Oh god unexpected rape attack'.
Then a month later they'll be like 'loltrain'

Absolutely. The Iowa Interstate already uses them in revenue freight service.
