Second Crit.. all Racing advertisers started in the minor league Racing Circuits... testing the waters to see if Racing would panout for them... This means they had a survey team that took segment surveys of people who attended the racing events to see if who was buying or at least 'seeing' the Adds on the Cars.
Name Brands like 'Tide' for instance only worked when people already recognized the Logo they saw on the side of the Car... I highly recomend SCCA racing cars as good place to start ads
My crit... Okay... Good Idea... Bad implementation I get Racing equals Linux equals Racing But you obviously haven't consulted a Real Advertising person about this... Delivery is too long and toooo 'sloooooow' for a product that I am supposing your wanting to say is 'FAST!!!! Redo the Add... Make it 15 seconds tops... name off all the things alike in motor racing AND linux engineering Refinement Teamwork Desire Speed Linux take pics of all the parts of a Race Car that show these qualities

I really hate all the bashing, but some of what's been said here is moronic.
How's that Windows doin' for ya? After two decades, can it make it through the day by itself, or are you still relying on third-party software? Has a machine been made that's _fast_enough_ to run Windows at a competent speed?
Linux stands by itself, runs a chunk of Windows software, and can safely take me to any website on the net. And, it runs on 27+ types of hardware. Linux is everywhere- get used to it.
Not to mention it is whatever you want it to be. Just like a car you can open the hood, take it apart, and make it better for you if you know what you're doing. Turn that volkswagen into a tank, boat, or helicopter if you feel the need. Windows has the hood welded shut. Macintosh takes AA batteries and the hood is painted on.
NASCAR is stock (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing).
Both races concern maximum performance, but Formula 1 is display of the rocket science of automobile performance.
Both types of races had their origins in an era of cheap and abundant gasoline.
. . . that said, pushing and tweaking all around performance for the sake of sporting competition benefits the science and engineering of autobile industry (including the improvement of fuel economy).

(Too bad about that Linux-sponsored Indy 500 car -- it was the first car to crash on the track and it finished dead last. I don't think they sponsored a car in the 2008 race.)
if that was the case, microsoft would have a whole fleet of cars... one named "XP", one named "VISTA", and one named "98", guess which one would crash first? :D
The reason Linux has bad wireless support is that wireless companies are too lazy to make their cards work with Linux. Blame them, not Linux. Oh and I'm posting this from Ubuntu 7.10. It doesn't really require restarting and my wireless card works by default. And damn is it not boring, I have the entire internet at my fingertips on a stable, secure, free, and incredibly resource efficient platform.
well ill try to run ubuntu on my old pc with and older card, and maybe get a glass theme and beyrl, ya im not a die hard "windows forever" kinda peron...hell maybe lunix might beat mac one day, but in time
Thanks for handing MS a PR gadget they will use until the end of times.. Now, remind me again, just how much would have been possible with that money used for, say, developing code for the OLPC. Or, how many OLPCs could have been funded and generate a marketing opportunity PER UNIT?
The car crashes out first, and finished dead last. I love linux, but DAMN! Get a freaking driver. Proceed with "It's windows fault, he couldn't see out of them", and other microsoft flames.
The Indy500 is seen anywhere in the world that ESPN reaches, which is a LOT of places... i think i recall reading somewhere that the estimated TV audience of this thing s over 350 million people...
Ah, now *that* is a fun assumption (you REALLY have no idea, LOL). You're quick to allege I have no clue, yet fail to give direct answers to my questions. Couple of sample extras: how visible is Indie outside the US? In how many languages will this work?
As I said, I wish you luck. I'll even send you your dollar, although the Firefox money was IMHO better spent.
As for having a clue - let's see just how much coverage you got when it's over.
Well, you best get started. Get the money raised, get some publicity and...Oh, my mistake. You have no intention of actually DOING anything. You just want to munch your cheetos and throw rocks at other efforts.
Gotcha. My bad. I had the silly notion for a split second that you actually wanted to do something to make it happen and to spread the word of Linux. Silly me.
You're using big brand tactics for an unknown logo. You expect that someone spots the penguin AND remains curious enough to investigate, and you further expect to provide real insight in 1 column inch of print.
For perspective, 25k USD buys 25.000 volume pressed CDs, 5 large conferences or 160 OLPC boxes for donation - much more coverage, screen time and interviews. And what will happen to funds if you DON'T reach target?
Unknown brands advertise in this way all the time... that's one way they become KNOWN brands.
25,000 pressed CD's reach roughly 25,000 people. We're talking about potentially reaching millions, and getting those people to ask "What is Linux?" That's how marketing works.
If we can manage to reach one of the higher sponsorship levels, the story will be HUGE. It will be much more exposure than just the race.
As for your final question, we addressed that in a story on linux-dot-com.
The fact that you have to ask those questions is an indication of two things. You have absolutely no idea of how to market Linux and neither do you have the desire. Some of the people who are leading this project have done so at an incredible cost. You really should check some things before you make such silly comments. A brief search of Linux dot komm should educate you sufficiently
So you want Linux supporters to pay for your hobby? And how is that going to help the community? How many ads do you think will be seen other than that one on the winners car? Oh, and let me dispel that notice of "WE" - it's YOU who wants it. It's US who'd pay for something that has at best questionable value. Sorry, you'll have to try harder than that.
In short... yes it is a hobby of mine, so is Linux. I don't understand why you find that relevant to the discussion. This isn't about me. This is about marketing Linux... to get the non-technical person to start having a discussion about Linux. Target, Motorola, The New York Stock Exchange, Jim Beam, Vonage, and many other companies don't find this to be of questionable value. What exactly do you know that they don't?
While racing isn't my bag and I won't watch the race, I don't mind that someone is motivated enough to try to spearhead an effort to sponsor a car. in the linux world, we have to leverage where people's interests juxtapose with linux's interest.
We also don't have to worry about diluting the core message, there is room enough for this racing gig as well as an effort to sponsor OLPC boxes and whatever else motivates someone to dedicate their free time to spreading the word.
Really professional, love the enthusiasm!

Did anyone notice that there're more Linux users around then most people think?
I mean, Nokia N900, Google Android, TomTom Navigator, most routers, most websites, Google, even YouTube, all Linux.
And that's good, because Linux is great!

It's ok to see a car named after Linux crashes.
But the idea here is not to expose the car that crashes, but to make the world aware of OS crash could also fatal to data they have.
