@LakeofJordan - I have a better "shred session" of this song from this years run. BUT, it's too long to put on here, and I haven't had any time to try and crop it...........maybe sooner than later!!!
@UmphMania27 DUDE!!! Crop that video and get that up!!! I loved how they split it up during this section with Wappy! Have you listened to the Red Rocks version or seen videos on YouTube? Jake demolishes that section and takes shredding to another level there. I love coming out of that riff back into the lyrics....when all those white lights just blow up, I feel like I'm being born again! HAHAHA!!!
@cujo8719 - DUUUUUUUDE!! It's up and in it's FULL entirety since youtube is now AWESOME and can allow vids to 15 min long. Just click on Wappy Sprayberry-Mantis on my vids............then ENJOY ;)
if one more person trys to compare umphrey's to phish im gunna freak wtf? not apples and oranges. carrots and zebras practically. so they are a jam band and ther vocals are humurous at times, wow the similarities are staggering. both are great bands. BBs vocals can be off sumtimes, every show ive seen (12) they're on but welcome to live music. and as for Jake's guitar playing thats what happens when the devil sells his soul to you.
damn i fucking love umph and these vocals really arnt the greatest. im sure everyone is gonna be like WTF but hey just being honest. they have so much good things said about them this one thing wont hurt. the waka show this year was fucking amaizing
Let me explain to you why everyone rips on the vocals. They suck. Just like this band. Steve Vai trips acid and plays in a Moe. cover band. That's what Umphrey's McGee sounds like to me.
Let me explain to you why everyone rips on the vocals. They suck. Just like this band. Steve Vai trips acid and plays in a Moe. cover band. That's what Umphrey's McGee sounds like to me.
idk why everyone disses on the vocals. i see ppl do the same thing on Madahoochi's vids. when singing in that particular key, it is difficult to capture it's true sound w/ vid-cams. it has to do w/ where the sound vibrations are bouncing. had this been edited w/ a SB recording, i think it would be smoother. ppl, when viewing youtube vids, keep in mind what they were recorded with. the cams mics dont pick up everything they should, and they pick up things they should NOT! ...
@shymama8 and i think it is a damn good recording, for not having all the pro's equipment. i mean, look at all the bootlegs from the GD. some sound like absolute horsesh**, but it didnt mean that Jerry sucked. and 'sides that, when it is a TOURING band, they arent gonna give a bomb diggity performance every time. this isnt the studio w/ overdub and playback. the fact that the get up and DO IT as oft as they do shold jus be enough. i think this performance was pretty kind! so was the recording...
If you see them live.Purchase the cd of that show, and you will be amazed at how good the vocals and sound really is.This audio does them no justice whatsoever. They really play practically flawless!
This song is hilarious...The first 2 and a half minutes are downright awesome....but then from 3:00 minutes to 5:20 it is complete shit. The band sounds horrible (from BB's vocals to the horribly unoriginal heavy metal guitar riffs). Why would they turn a great start into something like that. Boo umphreys...Boo
@MBaker1203 Sorry, but you must have been listening to a different song. While I agree the song slows down a bit in that part, the whole thing is amazing. To call Jake Cinninger's riffs 'horribly unoriginal heavy metal' is just ludicrous. His guitar work is simply amazing.
@MBaker1203 m no. that is how it does on the album. it is called an "interlude," bands that can do flawless segues and change-ups ('specially live) is a pretty big ball of Awesome, i day. "horribly unopriginal heavy metel guitar riffs" dude, you must be smokin somethng terrible! lol. no disrespect to ya. but if you did your homework, youd know the album was based upon a series of riffs and later compiled. took over 2 yrs to make the album. i find it clever and simply put, amazing!
Brendan's vocals don't sound that great on this recording. Sure, the mix is guitar heavy, but that doesn't change Brendan's pitch issues. I saw UM perform this song live in Salt Lake City on the 20th and the vocals were dead on, sounded great. That's the nature of live music I guess.
Ok, three shows isn't much to back yourself up on. I've been to 10 in just the past 2 years, and his vocals fluctuate just like any other band on the road. Any lead singer is gonna have good and bad days regardless. Unfortunately, it seems that his vocals on this song weren't his best. Doesn't really matter cuz UM's ability to improv makes up for any vocal "slander", so yea..........
@UmphMania27 Well the vocals isn't even what you're there for. You're there for the face-melting guitar and ridiculous percussion and drum playing. Have you seen Kris Meyeres left hand? IT'S FUCKING CRAZY
@ReaLizZe7 - I have seen Kris play with just his left before, and I agree. But you also need to keep in mind that the ENTIRE band is extremely talented in each of their respective fields. Hence, why Umphrey's is HANDS DOWN, the best prog rock band.......in my mind at least!!
his vocals really aren't THAT off - a little at times, but what we are hearing is a mix that is highly dominated by the lead guitar (camera is right in front of his amp) Bottom line is these guys are talented musicians, it would be sweet to hear this mix from the board.
props on the seats though umphmania.. also one of my favorites from mantis.
I really love UM, but I'm not too impressed with the live vocals. Oh well. Say what you want about Phish, but those fuckers sure can play music/improvise/put on a sick show.
Hahahahahaha, the most TRUE answer ever. If there wasn't a studio for many bands out there, they would fail miserably live and would have NO ONE following them.
@UmphMania27 but in this situation, umphrey's studio is the stage, because thats like where they always are, and every time ive seen um live they absolutely kill it. umphrey's is as good live, if not better, than studio.
I love this song. The begining is my favorite..."We believe..." I don't know the rest yet since I got the album recently. Saw them last week...so sick - Bayliss is God.
@msrysignals Warren Haynes with Gov't Mule.. Grat Vox in a jam band. I have heard a lot of complaints about Umph's live vox, but im with you man. musicianship is tremendous! and will make up for a sub-par vocal night anyday!
imo DT has no innovention at live shows...its just the song on the albums, u get nothing new. PLus every 3 seconds Jordan Rudess is unneccassarily shredding on the piano making everything sound like shit.
DT is my favorite band, but Um is way better life. I may enjoy a DT concert more, but that is simply cause i like the music more (no offense um, i love u guys too)
The thing about Umphrey's is that their raw talent and skill for producing and creating new and unique music, LIVE on the spot........pretty much makes up for the vocals!! You can't compare this band to any ONE band cuz their sound and style is so unique.........it's pretty much impossible to know what they're gonna do next!!
I agree w/ Dream theater. They are great live, but I'm pretty sure for this band takes LIVE shows to a whole new level. The "Jimmy Stewarts"/ song improvs, are probaly the world's most amazing thing to watch happen right in front of your face. The ability for each member in the band to play off of each other to create something entirely new and unique blows my FUCKIN mind!! The improvs that this band can create, to me, takes extraordinary talent and patience, and they never fail at this.
I agree to disagree!! They are the best live band EVER, but as far as radio play. Well, that depends on who's aspect your looking thru. From the fans aspect, radio play is bogus cuz it'll attract stupid groupies. From the band, it's a feeling of accomplishment that they can now be heard on a nationwide basis, and it shows that they've actually "made it" in the music industry.

Too long of songs!! They have had radio play in some states, but the only songs they played were Made to Measure or 1348 from Mantis, and they had to cut both of them under 5 minutes!! TRUE Umph music, is LIVE!! Best live performances EVER!!
@geodacius It is up to the band if they want to get radio play. You have to taylor the tunes to the format that the radio market you are shooting for wants. No other way to do it in this universe...
