Um, I am new to Bonsai and I have my first tree which has been doing well since a bought it three years ago. I will admit, I bought it from a stand that came to or store, probably shouldn't have, but it did great. But the guy never even said what kind it was for one. From looking around it seems to be a Japanese Juniper. It's getting rather dull in color, not really brown, but dry looking. I know it needs repotting, but I'm not sure if that's the problem.
@83elemental If you haven't repotted it in three years, it is overdue, and I am guessing the soil is exhausted of nutrients, and probably packed hard enough to impair water penetration. Pull the tree out of the pot and examine the soil. It is probably packed with roots and fine powder. If it is not snowing or burning hot, get to work on repotting right now! If bonsai-unfriendly weather is in the near future, prune the roots as little as possible and temporarily put it in a larger pot.
@chasnsx Thanks for the feedback. I will certainly get on that. It's just been that theres no one that deals in products for Bonsai but I luckily found a place to order from. Thank you again.
@83elemental I have books, tools and wire available on my website, kuromatsubonsai. I do not have soil available yet because I have not found a supplier that meets my standards. There are also usually some links to the better tree nurseries.
I really enjoy to watching your video. I like your bonsai soil mix. Can you use same kind of bonsai soil mix for other kind of bonsai tree? OR for only Juniper. If is not what kind of bonsai soil do you mix? etc.. ficus, maple and elm.. I'm beginner bonsai and I would like to make my won..
Thank you Chasnsx for the advice! Ive put my Juniper in a different spot now where it recieves about 5 hours of Morning sun,and shade throught the rest of the day. It seems to be doing great! Also when is the best time to remove whole branches on the tree?
The best time to remove a large branch is early spring. In Australia I guess that would be July or August. Since you are already past the Equinox, I would not chance it, particularly since you said you are in hot weather. If your winters are mild, you might be able to do it in the fall, say in April or May, or in midwinter -- June.
Also,i have a small juniper at home bought as a garden shrub, and the leaves are starting to brown! Could this be from over watering or too much sun? I live in Australia, and its hot here!
if theres too much sun, there can't be over watering....i think...
maybe u dont have a good draining soil.. or your tree has some sickness. i pine of mine died just like that, i didnt anything wrong (i wanna bealive) i think i plage kill it
im not an expert, i hope Charles answer you soon..
One other thing -- if a juniper has root rot, the foliage will go yellow then brown -- if it is too much sun, crispy brown patches will suddenly appear on the juniper as it withdraws sap.
Brown leaves can be from either too much sun or poorly draining soil -- pull the tree out of the pot and check the roots and soil. If the tree is rootbound or the soil is gloppy or caked up, then the tree needs a soil change. If the soil drains well you should be able to water 2x/day in hot weather. Also, keep the juniper out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, this can lead to foliage diebacks too.
oh thanks! i have a pot for han kengai, so i think i wont cut very much roots, they say it's gonna rain tomorrow, so... maybe is good time, im goint to wire some branches, and then repot.
i been waiting to work on this tree, so good i saw this video.. ammmm is this good time for wiring olives??
Keep it up mate!

@dhanraj540 You can use this mix for just about any bonsai, but you should use a little more potting soil for maples and elms.

i have a juniper, on the original soil, so that means i can put it on the bonsai pot now??
Aronath48 2 years ago
You should be able to. I usually cut a little less roots in a fall repotting than I do in a spring repotting.
