What I would like to see in your new DVD if possible are, Tuning techniques (how to get the best sound out of the kit), Quads using one pedal (I am told this is possible??), how to set up a good solo & sound good the easy way, how to choose sticks (small, Big, Nylon Tip or Wood Tip & Why).
Hope you can do this!!!
Thanks for all the great lessons & fun over the years,
I want to learn some drum line rudiments for snare and also some jazz beats with a modern twist or something. . . I want your DVD to more "out of the box" than others.
hey i was wondering if you can include some odd time signitures like 5/4 stuff like that, that is where i need to improve anyways i think it would be great help sence alot of people dont even kno they exist thanks!
Hey Randy if you're still taking requests for your dvd or maybe just a youtube video I would like to see some blues half time shuffle stuff and maybe a little insight on John Bonham's "Fool In The Rain" groove. I know there is already some videos out there on it but they're not RVP so they're not what im looking for.
ok i like the new drum? looks like you may not need the yamahas no more so send them to me. i will pay the shipping...lol keep up the great work randy...
I say advanced solo techniques. Weird stickings and note groupings when played, slow sound easy, but crazy sounding played fast. I like the funk groves and latin also. Maybe a hybrid approach as to play grooves in a solo, thus hitting 2 birds with one DVD.
Many of us never played in the marching band or had lessons that show how to get the left hand (being a right handed person) to be as quick as the right. My speed is slower due to this lack of practice or practical training of how to achieve this left handed speed.
Hi Randy, if you put a dvd together that focused on soloing techniques and structure and really gave useable and practical advice I reco it would be the first to do that. Existing dvds give the sort of advice that you would already know if you are capable of following it (does that make sense?). And some help with 'shredding out' at the end of songs.
Van, I am trying to play everything with a metronome and I just started doing that.. can u do a small bit on practicing with a metronome.. the problem is how to divide a beat for clicks etc and even more importantly how to be creative and not get too conscious of the clicks.. I know it comes with practice but I would still like a Pro's inputs on this topic.
Hey Randy, I bought your first DVD and found it quite useful. For the next dvd i would like to see more rhythm building exercises, endurance building exercises, tips on accents, and ofcourse any cool grooves that you have discovered throughout your decades of experience. Thanks again. Looking forward to your next instructional video and you upcoming DVD!
ok (deep breath) i think basic techniques and wrist excersise stuff how to build up speed different set ups tuning and putting heads on recording (how to set up for recording drums) solo stuff what sounds good with different grooves etc i really want to build up my speed but can really only do parradiddles everything else sounds like crap
Im interseted in all of the things you mentioned. i would want to know the technicalities of the drums. Woods, Tuning and all that. I would also want to see some stuff about rudiments and definately the solo stuff too = DD
make a dvd, that tells about the diffrences between birch drums maple and stuff like that, tell about diffrent heads and stuff, and tell about how it affects the drumset! talk about how to tune drums and what not!
I want to learn rudiments that a judge at Guitar Center's Drum-off won't ever forget. Show me how to become a great drummer. Tell me drum secrets. Be creative with your DVD. Then yes, i agree with 'billybobobJr' that the DVD needs a totally sweet radtacular solo by you Mr. badass Patten. Shit balls i wanna play my drums now but the baby is sleeping...GAHHHHH!!!
stick tricks for drum SET solos. like something to show your non drumming friends that will make them think your amazing. also odd time signatures would rock.
i'm looking for a good dvd for christmas... can you PLEASE post a little preview like 1 minuite over each "section" of the dvd if you could call it that, just like what cobus did.
Definitely tuning and setting things up. Odd time signatures would be nice. Maybe stick tricks and solos, that sort of thing. Rudiments and hand/foot technique would be cool.
SOLO TECHNIQUES AND TALKING IN DEPTH ABOUT SETTING ON PEDALS AND TUNING. your drums always sound amazing and i want to know a thing or two about that.
I'd like to see some stuff about tuning. My kit could defiantly use some of it. Also i'd liked to see some stuff about licks and fills and solo technique would also be awesome!
Honestly, while I like the instructional side of your videos here on youtube, I like it more when its just you jamming out and grooving...so if your DVD isn't going to be marketed as a purely "instructional" DVD, then have lessons built in with you playing the learned material and grooving to it. Maybe you could record yourself playing, and then go back and watch the video and pick out things you did and go into a specific rudiment or musical phrase more deeply that you used
I purchased your first dvd and thought it was pretty cool :) , my suggestion would be " LICKS and FILLS" and also "Hand and Foot Technique Development" i.e. double strokes I can seriously never have enough on those concepts, peace.
the basics are flooding youtube already. Not that I don't think you're a good teacher I just think you should focus more on soloing stuff that really displays your voice on the instrument. Those funk vids are great and simple, love how you added the notation. I think you'd do well picking a bunch of lines from that book and maybe some free jam stuff.
...your bassist by playing off of each other. For me this would make a great addition to the DVD and I know it would help out a lot of drummers that are having this problem.
Hey, I'm not much of a drummer, I'm a bassist by trade, but I have a suggestion for the DVD. Maybe do a section on how to play with a bassist? I know a lot of fantastic drummers in my area, but none of them know how to play along to a bassline. Perhaps start with the simplest of 4/4 beats, and then branch off into more complicated rhythms, different time signatures, etc? Teach how to accent the fundamental beats of the bassline, and go into how you can make things a lot more interesting with...
ahh yes mate, but it takes two to tango i play drums and i know what your talking about but u cant leave it up to the drummer to follow u,they want some freedom aswell
Yes, I understand that, for the most part though the bassist and drummer should be working together as a unit, and it would greatly benefit learning some of the basics and more for when you do come across the chance to play with a bassist and for those drummers who are in a band and aren't exactly sure how they can lock in with the bassist. I'm not saying the drummer should follow the drummer all the time or vice versa, I agree that both players should have freedom..
I agree to an extent, yes, it can only really be learnt by getting out there and doing it yourself, but when I first starting playing drums and bass, I remember always hearing people say "you've got to lock in with your drummer/bassist", or "try and follow the kick drum, it'll help tighten up the rhythm section", and I remember just sitting and thinking, "what they fuck are they on about?!" So I think a basic guide would be very helpful for drummers (and bassists) who were confused like me.
I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. I understand the point you're trying to make, and I agree with it. But some people may want a little tuition or have a few ideas for when they play with a band, so they don't get totally lost. It may come naturally some players, which is great, but then again it may not, so a little push in the right direction would benefit them I think.
Most the comments I see on here are how I feel. Don't do a basic drumming or solo DVD. I have really enjoyed your funk lessons and I would love to learn techniques for funky time sig's, complex patterns, etc. You da man Randy!
I have learnt a great deal from your free youtube lessons. Youre a great drummer and a wonderfull teacher. Have you thought about a DVD to teach teachers how to teach. Could you please have a look at Dylan Elise on youtube and explain some of the stuff hes doing with his feet? Hes only 16 in the video but he has it all. But im not sure what hes doing with his pedals, not even sure how many he is using.
Hand and foot techniques have been pretty well been covered by other DVDs I think. What would kick absolute ass IMO, would be just steaming through a load of cool grooves from different styles broken down and notated as in the recent funk videos. The way you break it down and actually make it fun unlike the overly serious or 'I'm better than you' vibe a lot of instructional DVDs tend to give off should send you to the top.
Kick ass RVP, i think you might have heard me when I have been asking for a vid on piecing together a solo. Throw that on the new disc, it would be a great advantage to see how your mind flows while soloing.
Do it on how to structure a drum solo when performing on stage with your band. My band begs me for solos and sometimes I just don't feel like it. So I'd like to get your input on how to structure a solo and I could make one up and practice is for the times I don't feel inspired.
id love to hear how you'd approach complicated polymetres. like tomas haake style stuff. how you could come up with it and how to understand how a 7/8 foot pattern would move underneath a halftime 4/4 groove.
Perhaps a drum lesson on working with only a few drum parts. Many new drummers can barely afford more than just one crash, one ride, and the hihat. one snare, a bass, and 1 or 2 toms. Show how you can still make some nice drum beats using only a few drum parts. =)
One of your best lessons ever in my opinion was the one where you take the hi-hat away from the rest of the set and work with it alone...would love to see some more of similar style.
Advanced snare rudiments/ marching snare for a full drumset would be awesome.
advanced rudiments would be awesome. maybe a snare only and a few on the set examples of them. I dont know what your first dvd covers, forgive me, but id like to see some technique help for all the blast beats. such as the progression from one to the next as you progress in drumming. different hand / finger techniques. how to use / building up specific muscle groups perhaps? of course more of those funky beats with creative snare placements those are always nice.
I'd love to see some solo techniques, and perhaps some work on time signatures. There could be a basic section that covers the tuning and such as well, if people wanted.
I'd really like to see an in-depth look at tuning drums. For me, it's one of those sort of grey areas that every time I tune, I'm kinda second-guessing myself and wondering if I'm "optimizing" my drum's performance correctly. I've seen other videos, but nothing that's made me go, "oooohhhhhhh, yeah!"
Aside from that, I think a basics would be great. Posture, breathing, RUDIMENTS (the bane of my existence...), and just move into some advanced stuff -- that leaves you open for DVD #3 ;)
Basic lesson would be great. I am a huge zeppelin and rush fan and idolize John Bonham. I look forward to getting my drum set and would like to build my drum skills on his type of drumming. Your an epic drummer and i look up to your for answers.
You Are such a badass! Your Enthusiam alone makes me love your video's, let alone the awsome drumming!

What do I do when I'm away from my kit?
Choosing cymbals? What do I need to hear?
Does my style determine what drums I buy?
Tuning technique?
This is asking for a lot. If you could fit it in there somewhere... I would greatly appreciate it... :D

Basic lesson would be great. I am a huge zeppelin and rush fan and idolize John Bonham. I look forward to getting my drum set and would like to build my drum skills on his type of drumming. Your an epic drummer and i look up to your for answers.

well...I'm dissapointed that you didn't talk about pre-school drums, I've got a set, and I want to know how to play them.

I like the basics idea and the drums 101 idea. You should also show us some good ways to practice up on certain stuff.
