Yu is not struggling with being pushed, if you've watched "My Brilliant Brain" : Born Genius, he voluntarily practices 8 - 10 hrs a day and says he "loves every minute of it", as far as i'm concerned, he's confident in his playing, if there might have been mistakes, it's most likely the result of something physical
It's not a question of jealousy. There are some reasonable criticisms here. Parents and record companies often push kids hard at too early an age. Yu is obviously struggling with it, he sounds nervous, unsure, like a guy lifting weights that are too heavy. Please read the autobiography of Rubinstein... Joseph Joachim was so smart when he told R's parents to let the kid have a childhood. But our commercial world just eats up kids. I don't care if he is a genius, he'd remain one w/t the concert.
I honestly go to school with him. He didn't tell people that he was on Ellen or Oprah and then he performed for us. Then kids asked how he was so good and then he announced to my school
Well atleast we know what hes going to be when he grows up.I wanna learn how to play piano.I know how to play the guitar but pianos better I think haha be soo cool if I learned both.play guitar with my feet and piano with hands awesome!
i agree with previous comments in that while marc has potential, i don't think he was technically or mentally ready to play this at the time this video was recorded. i think it would've helped to expose him to some of beethoven's sonatas/other classical period pieces before attacking this concerto; the point is not to race and become the youngest to place such and such concerto. and no, i will not post a video of myself playing this--that's not the point of constructive criticism.
no, i love the kid, but marc has consistently played this way. we give him the benefit of the doubt, but when martha argerich was his age she played mozart concerto's like an adult.
@mdoub Yes, conductor is a little annoying, he always seems to be urging the orchestra to do things, instead of be in the same side and offer confort. He makes a lot of innecesary "visual noise" and it's confusing
What an amazing performance! I saw this kid first on " My Brilliant Brain - Born Genius (part1/5) " Its an hour long though so not for the easily bored...
I would prefer a Bosendorfer, but only because i have heard more about them, no experience in playing either one. Steinway and Yamaha are what I've played.
Oh, he is SO cute! and he plays really well too! though, yeah, the rocking back and forth for more than 2 minutes...still, really good playing at the age of 9... er, and .1 ^^;
somebody's jealous that they're not as good as marc. leave him alone. just because he's better than you could ever be and he's that young doesn't mean that you have to degrade him.
For the second time, I'm not talking about his technical abilities at the piano, No doubt he is great, but understanding comes with maturity, and life experience. I don't think a 9 yr boy has experienced the loneliness, and suffering that Beethoven did. That's what I'm trying to say. My original comment said the the motions he was making were taught to him, and they most likely were.
the kid is actually pretty good at interpreting beethoven. it's just the audio that is kinda sucks. im listening without watching. i didnt notice he does the back-forward body movement and crazy head nodding thing which annoys some people (including me when i saw it lol).
some part in the beginning is so so, which is usual, but some part in the middle is very good. I like his interpretation on 09:09 - end .... (continue to part 2), awesome.
I have to agree about his rocking back and forth, especially when he's not playing. I'm afraid he's going to fall off the bench (aside from it looking purposeless). :-P
I would hope that suffering and loneliness and all types of negative emotions aren't a necessity to making and participating in beautiful music. Its the attachment of these things to art that sometimes scare people away from it who otherwise might be very promising. His purity being so young is an attribute rather than a detriment.
well, great play for a 9 year old. several wrong notes ... e.g. at 5:30
a little too quick too soon for his growth ... dont have much idea of how those masters like horowitz etc played at age 9, but for Marc, he might need more training on foundations ...
what i really meant is, even this one is very good, there are other kids clearly playing better on this piece. For example, in YouTube, I found a 8 year old girl in Canada named Annie (OldRabit) playing a professional calibre one on the same concerto.
There are two geniuses here- Young Yu and the composer. Classical composers are such craftsmen that their out is able to absorb the attention of the best brains from the cradle to the grave, so to speak. Genius prodigies don't havr the testosterone and/or the range of life experiences which can make them insightful interpreters, and so Yu will have to restudy the piece later on . Having said that, this is a fantastic performance for a boy of 9.
He's obviously very talented. I wish him all the best in pursuing his dream of becoming a concert pianist. But is it just me, or is his playing a bit unstable in places? It may be a computer problem, but I feel that his playing is just not as confident as it should be considering his remarkable talent. Maybe he was just having a bad day...
I saw the story on the channel National Geo. (My Genius Mind) when he grows older he has to be creative if he wants to capture everyone's attention. He will have trouble when he reach the age of 15, puberty...
Perhaps you could enlighten us with your live video performances.
this argument the a perfect example of an illogical fallacy, an Ad hominem, or simply insult the speaker
how would joerois404d's own performance of the music have any bearing on the quality of the performance in the video above? the two have videos absolutely no effect on one another.
if your best friend told you george lucas sucks as film director, you wouldn't tell him to direct a better sequel to Indiana Jones
@lasik4u He wasn't judging, he merely made a comment saying that he felt it was off for whatever reason, and genuinely came across as someone who felt that way.
@joerois404d I don't suppose you can play even 1/2 as good as him, so why do you say that? Giving advice in matters you don't know yourself is not really all that good...
obviously he's a child prodigy, but it think this piece is simply too big for him. he's not really relating to it at all. but then again... he's 9 years old.
Well, listen to his speeches on Youtube- his English isn't PERFECT; there's some Asian in it- I assume his mom taught him English as the Macauan influence is quite strong in his English (oct-ayve) instead of (oct-ive)
No offense intended, Taskat. I know he's from So Cal but I was responding to someone's comment that Asian Language speaking kids tend to have perfect pitch. According to one documentary film Yu spoke only Cantonese Chinese for his first 3 years and his heavy accent shows in his Ellen Degeneres interview.
Kudos to Marc - he certainly is talented ... but the camera work in this vid is horrible - I'd've expected much better close-in shots of his finger work on the keys - am totally frustrated
marc yu's musical talent for the piano was revealed at a birthday party when he was two. He heard a tune, walked up to the piano and played the exact notes. That's when his mother recognized Marc as a child prodigy. Marc loved music all along.
For those who are constantly jealous and attempt to relate talent with racial and ethnic issues, shut up, really.
Thank you, very much. It always makes me angry when people try to say things like, "His mother must work him too hard." Actually, he ASKED her if he could become a concert pianist. Watch the CBS interview. It was very fair.
actually, and this IS a fact, its known that eastern asians tend to be more likely to be talented at music or have perfect pitch. This is because those languages (especially Chinese) use pitches to indicate different meanings, so, because children are taught to be able to differentiate between different tones at an early age, they can hear music and understand the different notes.
I don't think you get it. To play Rachmaninoff your finger span must cover at least an octave+1. A kid that small wouldn't have a span even close to that.
He is one amazing boy!! Hope all the best for him in the years to come. I saw his programme on National Geographic. He is truly gifted. Its not only the piano but he is just a smart kid otherwise as well. Hope all the forces be with you Marc!!

I wonder what the conducter initially thought when he got the memo that the soloist would be a 9 year old boy. This kid is going to have a great life, already sharing the bench with Lang Lang.

How do you know I don't know the full, true story??? As a matter of fact I do and that's why I happen to care about this kid. Because the same kind of shameless parental exploitation was done to me in my days as a prodigy child musician. As a result I hate music, my parents and myself.
Watch his early videos. See how obsessed n self-driven he was with the piano even as a tiny 6 year old. His mom could not stop him from practicing even in the wee hours of the mornings. This innate drive separates true genius from the just gifted ones. True genius are completely self-driven. Many child prodigies losses their shine once they are grown ups when they are no longer special. Talents are never lost. Passions, yes. Why let others make u hate yourself n destroy your love for music ?
But does that not show that your passion for music was so weak? As for me, I love classical music! If only my mother was not so against it! She was really angry at my when I told her I'd be playing in a concert, she's calmed down a bit though. Your situation and mine are totally opposite!
Yes, still practicing hard. It is more difficult to load youtube videos these days because of copy right issues.

Of course the mother is exploiting him! Can't you see he's a performing monkey?!

it's not fair to pass judgement on other people's family business without knowing the full true story.

How do you know I don't know the full, true story??? As a matter of fact I do and that's why I happen to care about this kid. Because the same kind of shameless parental exploitation was done to me in my days as a prodigy child musician. As a result I hate music, my parents and myself.

u probably know ur own full true story, and not his.
u think (or want to think) that u share the same story. i symphatise with u, but pls do not let ur own emotions affect ur judgement.

The boy is amazing, that's for sure. I just hope his parents are not exploiting his talents. He's too young to live an adult's life.
