These shows tend to focus on those people who do poorly but they have the gaul to step out and present themself in front of a large televised audience, however poorly, and perform. Everyone I come across on these shows gains some respect from me due mainly to their ability to face the audience, something i would have difficulty with. These two continuing even with such discourse truly deserve more than what they got. They might not have been good, but they had courage and kept going.
