  • I love 5 octave marimbas

  • Where can you get the sheet music for free on the internet ?

  • @drikkes07 It's always good to buy your own music so you don't worry about copyright infringement.. plus, you want a reputable music library.

But, my being a poor college student, I understand.

  • what rating did you get??

i have to play it differently

  • @watergoddess26 This was not for a competition, It was part of a requirement for music majors.

  • where was this performed at????

  • @link0867 This was performed at the Recital Hall at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK.

  • Question, do you need a five octave? (Beautiful performance btw)

  • @CanyonBassCaptain No. I did it with one of four and a half. the lowest note you need is like super low B

  • any reason why you went with mallet 4 for that upper meoldy line? I just doing some pre-practice research before i start this. thanks.

  • @JoshJohnsonDrums Cause you play with four mallets at some points.

  • do you know what grade this solo would be? im a rising percussionist, and it looks like something that would be a good S&E peace for me...

  • @prodegyX7 In Texas, this was the top grade piece because of the four mallets.

  • the chord at 1:27 settles my soul.

  • Try changing roll speeds for better expression.

  • wow!! your really good. I have to play this for a competition and i am now depressed because i know it will be way worse than what you accomplished. you should be really proud!!

  • @polkadotprincess2013 Thank you for the compliment and I'm sure your competition will go very well.

  • Nice job!!! Do you know if the piece would fit on a 4.5 octave marimba?

  • This will fit on a low A marimba.

  • It's usually played on a 4.3 octave. I only played it on the 5 because I liked the resonance better.

  • tall fellows like us should find marimbas that adjust as to not practice bad habits

  • @proman2world you can get wood blocks too.

  • my gosh; i wish i could play mallets.

but i guess sax is my love<3

i just might pick mallets up too though(:

this piece just makes me wanna go learn mallets && play it on my own. you did a FINE job(:

  • What a fun piece. Not very challenging, but beautiful with plenty of room for expression

  • Hi Derek. This is Steve Gwin who wrote the solo you played. Nice job. Where do you go to School?

    Steve

  • Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. My Professor is Dr. Marc White. I've progressed quite alot since this solo and need to post more once I have the free time. This is one of my all time favorite solos. I love the Original Peice that the solo is based off of also.

  • I played this solo this past spring when I auditioned for Southeastern. It's a great piece and you totally nailed it. good job. Dr. White is a great teacher!

  • @Killothic

Hey just wondering, Iv'e done a lot of marimba stuff but nothing long like this. How long, honestly, does it take you to learn the piece so its audition/concert ready? Thanks. Beautiful btw!

  • @fcmilsweeper9

It used to take me weeks, but since I've gotten better usually a couple to few weeks depending on the piece. The last major work was "Michi" and even though it is long and a lot of ink, as most of her pieces are, It only took me a couple weeks to learn, musically shape, and memorize. But, give that, I do practice every day.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • i just got the music for this.

i cant wait to learn it.

    you sounded great.

    such a beautiful piece.

  • i recommend slowing down the whole thing haha. it sounded like you were trying to hurry and finish and missed notes.

  • I am doing this solo this year. I only have like one week left to perfect it! ahh! but yeah, i would just slow some things down to connect with it more. Other than that, no bad. i like this solo a lot :)

  • i'm playing this for IHSA Solo ensemble. i just got the music and 3 weeks 2 learn it

  • anyone else hear a horse at the end

  • And birds and elephants...

  • good job! in fact....excellent job

  • Ironic this was posted on my birthday and I'm playing that solo this year! Sounds brilliant!

  • you need more emotion

  • GoodJob! I recommend slowing down the roll sections, you don't have to stay in tempo. And when you're playing with your outer mallet be sure you're inner mallet isn't moving. And watch your octaves.

  • pretty :)
