While the effects of this movie are ridiculous most of the time, the concept is really good. John Woo just couldn't really blend that with the effects. I love the realism of Nicolas Cage's character though, there's not one soldier from World War 2 that came out unscathed, whether it be mentally, or physically. The War Crazy scene just ahead of this one is really gripping.
@gargarensi I realize he's not real, obviously. It's a movie, however, it is gripping the way John Woo tells his story. And who says Marines are impervious to bullets? I certainly didn't.
He might as well be considering how many Japanese soldiers he kills single handedly. John Woo's character development seems sincere and intriguing but its only undermined by the sheer lunacy of the battle scenes where enemy soldiers are cut down by the hundreds single-handedly.
@gargarensi You have a point, while it is ridiculous how dozens of soldiers are cut down, I'm sure that it, at the time, seemed to be irrelevant to the production team.
Today's war's are conducted under completely different circumstances. I mean today, soldiers wouldn't storm ahead like this with no support. Today's wars consist of locating a potential target maybe 50 miles away, then relaying the coordinates back to the artillery or air force units and then having THEM destroy the enemy. Soldiers nowadays don't get into the thick of the battle like they did back in then in 1944. You had to respect the courage that these soldiers in WW2 had.
I really enjoyed this movie from the action point of view. I would not have enjoyed it if the code talkers had featured main roles. Was funny to watch how ridiculous it was, love the bit towards the end when Cage was shooting a lot of Japs armed only with his Pistol. If you wanted to see Indians talking to each other on radio - watch a documentary... This is Hollywood...
Holy crap. You guys fail John Woo directed it. IT was ment to be action packed and NOT REAL. Watch any one of John Woos movie. They are all over the top and strictly for action only. It wasn't meant to be real at all. Maybe you guys should watch some of his interviews about the movie and you retards would understand why it was made this way.. So much fail in this.
Supposed to be an action movie? Well, some historical events should be handled with reverent care, not turned into cartoony movies. Especially if the role of minorities is handled, such as the movie Glory (black infantry in the US civil war) which was very well done. The experience of the Navajo indian was bungled in this one, it could have been a great movie but merely had good battle scenes
Disgrace of a movie. Possibly fit only for kids or people who are juvenile enough to appreciate the over-the-top and unrealistic battle scenes like this one.
i live in hawaii and was an extra in this scene, it was the most fun ive ever had, was issued the M1 carbine, but would rather carry the Garand, whatever, was SO fkn cool to do this
thats against the germans japenese therfer in land kinda to try trap so you no escape but it didnt work they normally got slaughtered because miscaluted troops that were landing
let's get one thing straight. if you like movies with a lot of death, destruction, explosions, blood, and people on fire, this is the movie for you.
