  • if only Sonnen has seen the video..

  • this would NEVER work if the person locked it under the knee

  • another thing, everyone of your techniques is shown with very little resistance! like in this video the triangle isnt even 100% tight. i wish you guys would make it more "real" or at least add more resistance so that it makes the move look effective. im sorry if my opinion seems harsh but i actually like watching your videos i can say that i ive learned a lot from you guys. im just saying with this technique and others you make it look too easy.

  • @juneda33 These are INSTRUCTIONAL videos. That is how techniques are taught. No one learns a move if your partner is resisting in the beginning. It is done this way to show all the steps and break it down in a correct manner. If not, it simply becomes a grappling match. If there is too much resistance to get this move, you need to switch to another. That is what jiu jitsu is about.

  • @Submissions101 im sorry maybe i was just pissed cuz i got submitted in class and i tried this and didint work. i understand.

  • It's not really relevant to the particular video, but as a new bjj practitioner my self ( white belt) I have to say that your videos are very controversial. Some like them and some hate them. I personally think you are doing a great work.

  • @gioelio Yep. Can't please all the people all the time and the internet allows anyone with fingers to type anything they wish. Take what you want, leave the rest. Isn't CHOICE a wonderful thing? Roll on !

  • @gioelio im a white belt also and i just realized we shoudnt talk shit cuz we havent done this long enough to truly understand the game and bash moves weve hardly explored.

  • @juneda33 Yep that's right but for the record I didn't bash the move. I loved it.

  • when they stand up if their hands arent locked its easy to get them in a armbar

  • I love watching your movies, every submission, sweep or escape is explain great and although I can't use it in practice it's very enjoying for me to see the real power of jiu-jitsu and grappling. I want to thank you guys because you are great! :)

  • I have a gym rival that does this to me EVERY TIME I triangle him. The only difference is that he puts his feet in my arm pits which makes it impossible for me to reposition while he pries my legs open. Now I know how to do it! Remember though, the best cure is prevention!

  • @Submissions101 I am having trouble with defending this escape...

  • Thanks for this tutorial, now i can survive to triangles very easily ! I saw this video like 3 months ago and I havn't been submitted by a triangle since then, and have used this technique lots of times, I've be getting a little of trouble by the position you end after executing this, It would be great to have some next moves advices... Still worth a million dollars ... again thanks !

  • this technique is great, i've tried using it for the past two weeks. Obviously it wont always work when your opponent knows what your doing so you need to pull this off fast. the only problem is when you forget the little details, like always pinning down youre opponents body down. i rushed this move too fast and ended up with my opponent mounting me. other than that, great video and thanks for posting it.

  • Sonnen is watching and disliking!

  • ....yea, or you could just pull a rampage jackson and power bomb the shit out of them and break the hold XD

  • Question, couldn't crossing your feet on their belly backfire on you? Take crossing your feet while holding a rear naked choke for example. If you do, then the person trying to defend the choke can just make a figure 4 over your feet and submit you by prying your feet down. Couldn't the guy doing the triangle do something similar with your feet here as well if you have them crossed?

  • @angrypandaman0 In my experience, they just don't have the leverage.

  • Sounds like just Sit and pray...

  • @CavemanProductions29 or maybe hes just a weird dude with social problems.

btw he already responded on FB

  • @CavemanProductions29 dana's overreacting. i gaurentee if diaz is in good health he will put him back in an apolagize, or maybe they're forcing him to cause they want to keep their poster boy.

  • We do the same technique but try to step on the arms when we stand up. Great escape though:)

  • i usually just pick them up and try to slam...when their within my weight class of course, this looks great though

  • Ah good sir, probably a stupid question, but seeing as I'm only a novice I suppose no question is stupid. But anyway, how wary of a leg submission should I be while doing this?

  • dameit cant have gsp winning yet i need to go beat him for that title

  • @CavemanProductions29 an btw gsp lost 2 of 5 round to shield almost entirley striking.

jake shield. arguably the worst striking in the ufc ww div.

the truth is (and i dnt care if you understand since you'll see in october) diaz has a answer for where ever gsp can put the fight. gsp wana lay n pray, diaz's gaurd is too good, gsp want to bang (god forbid) he'll get picked apart like everyone else, i dare gsp to put his glass jaw to the test.

wana grind a decision? diaz doesnt gas. goodluck

  • @CavemanProductions29 tapd to strikes. then was separated from consciousness.

matt searra is better than sherk/diego? nother dumb point of urs.

you count cut losses as legits, more proof your a zombie, you probably think jones and fedor lost too.

it doesn't prove anything? everyone has been asking for the diaz fight cause everyone knows hes the only test at ww.

i cant wait till the day if he really does man up and wanna prove something by movin up.

  • @CavemanProductions29 y would they stand w/ someone w. ko power? kos dsnt have ko power? no, he just sucks at striking and should probably work on it since wheneva he gets a well rounded opponent he gets embarrased.

kos did not dominate, he squeaked out a decision, by huggin and causing vertually no damage, much like gsp/chael

gsp got ktfo and subbd. funny how he tapd both times.

nick has never been really been finished.

2 quote the future ww champ. "i don't lose fight i run outa time

  • @CavemanProductions29 gsp doesn't even know how to finish a armbar that he was given. nick was destroyed in the ufc? he had 3 losses due to a stalling gameplan cause no one really wants to scrap with nick.

plus 2 of em were considered robberies. nice mma math w/ kos n daley lol. did kos beat daley standing? nope he was scared shitless so he stalled.

dana didn't let nick back in the ufc, untill he was the only real challenge gsp has had since tappin to strike by serra an gettin subd by hughes

  • @CavemanProductions29 i mean diaz beats his opponents where his opponents are best. who ktfso of daley? oh, no one. where ever gsp trys to take the fight diaz will outclass him, no hiding now homie.

chaels been on roids bro, an he still cant finish a fight

  • @Nick209Diaz diaz an his fans are the one that got the fight, gsp doesn't wanna fight the best, he would've asked for the diaz fight but he didn't, he would move up to mw but he doesnt cause he know what would happen.

finishing a fight isn't important? lol your a zuffa zombie bro, theres a reason anderson is considered the greastest of all time, gsp will never have the legacy compared to fedor or anderson.

in the end anderson will have the highlight reel in which he will be rememberd. gsp? no.

  • @CavemanProductions29 nick diaz is about to be the be considered the best welterweight in the world. chael sonnen is a troll that can't defend submissions and needs roids to compete.

  • @CavemanProductions29 wut? what are you trying to say

  • Chael Sonnen made 14 accounts and disliked this video, because he forgot to turn his hand and elbow

  • What if they hold the arm across? Prevention is better than a cure. Posture is the key to escaping and avoiding the triangle.

  • For someone who has many years experience in different styles of martial arts I can tell you that the triangle choke applied in this video was done improperly. If done properly it would be harder to get out of especially for an untrained person.

For this technique to work properly you need to have one of the person's arms in his own throat before applying the triangle choke, which was not shown in the video.

  • Very good escape, another escape from the triangle that I find much easier is almost the same, after you stand up and you sink your butt down. put your feet on the opponent's armpits, then lean back and it should break the triangle with little energy

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!! The one thing I've always lacked in MMA is my Submission defense and I'm always getting caught in Triangles, and kimuras so thank you so much :)

  • The guy that was doing the triangle was not that good at it. I mean, I'm not amazing either, but some people have better leg traingles. Just saying

  • @AkhanOnline1

ha wasn't fully in^^...I think it's a really good technique to try if someone attempts a triangle...if the opponent get's it perfectly the first time (in one move) then the triangle is very difficult to escape (ask fedor =D) but mostly it's a bit of a scramble and then it's good to have such a technique to try something instead of just waiting until air and blood are gone =)

  • This works man. someone did it to me! ahahha and they had a perfect position for an ankle lock o:

thanks for your awesome vids man!!

  • i hate when you accidentally get into a 69 when you're on mount

  • A spinning elbow strike works too, just ask Jon Jones... but I would never teach it as a valid technique. I mean if you want to use a lot of high risk, low success moves in your game, then go for it. A good instructor shouldn't be dazzling his students with all the cool stuff that 'could' work and stick to the basics.

  • Chael tried this against Anderson Silva.

  • Thanks a bunch on the other videos about getting out of choke hold BIG!! Thumbs up

  • This technique didn't work to well for Chael Sonnen lol. Your arm is left in the perfect position for a triangle armbar. I like the step across the head and sit method, it hurts your opponent and puts you in position for ankle locks, or atleast a good scramble for a new position

  • in no gi u dont even have to pry out but slip out once you get the feet on the stomach. Watch out for arm bars...so do it quick...either way...u shouldnt of got in that position in the first place.

  • @redrivermma Absolute statements for martial arts are something to avoid. I've used this many times and have seen it used many times. I've seen high level instructors TEACH this as well. Does it work 100% of the time? Of course not. Nor does an arm bar but we never question that. If the triangle is broken and even creates a scrabble, you have survived the attempt. Not all moves work on all people 100% of the time. If they did, we'd only need one move for everything.

  • @Submissions101 Wont that give the opponent a Ankle Lock though? Since your legs will be on there body so they could reach out and just catch you from there?

  • @Submissions101 is this what chael sonnen tried to do against silva....but couldn't cus he sucks.

  • @Submissions101 There are so many techniques of offense and defense for every move...all I got to say is that I got saved from a triangle choke today by using this technique. My opponent was all confuse. LOL. Like I said again...so many techniques of offense and defense to remember just for one move lol.

  • Comment removed

  • @redrivermma I've used this technique many times and worked fine

  • @Layz613 I don't buy it. Did you actually use it in full resistance? Have you seen it done in a tournament? If I put a triangle on someone and they pull back to beat it, I would definitely close it with the leg hooked and it'd be done.

  • @redrivermma Well I use it while rolling so yes the times I've escaped using this technique was against full resistance

  • @redrivermma no dude this works just ask chael sonnen!

  • @redrivermma ADCC 2005- Xande Ribeiro vs Roger Gracie

Roger uses this technique to escape a fully-locked triangle by Xande. Roger Gracie is perhaps the most accomplished BJJ artist on the planet, and arguably the pound for pound best grappler ever. If this is his choice of triangle defense, it's mine too.

  • @redrivermma dude this definitely works i did it at training today!

  • @redrivermma i get what you mean, a good triangle, you just wont get out, a good armbar, gogo plata, whatever it may be, if its done properly you wont get out unless its in a late round and you're both fucked. this technique does work however, i've used it in round 2 of a competition and mercifully it broke the triangle :)

  • @redrivermma My teacher once locked me in a HELL of a triangle. I was about to tap, like the room was going black, and he was double my weight with 20x the experience. I sat on my butt, wrapped my legs and pried out of it and actually escaped and got back to my feet. As he stood, my trainer said "Very good!' and mentioned it was a high level technique. It does fucking work, you don't know what you're tlaking about. I used it in a crazy situation with crazy odds and escaped.

  • would this leave you vulnerable to any kinda leg locks?

  • 12 people didnt do it right and got blacked out by triangle ;D

  • also make sure to keep your hands face down as to not get caught in an armbar/triangle.

  • This works really good. as for legs if you can place your legs under your opponents armpit it's even more effective.

  • I really like that one

  • This is a weak triangle, you have to be almost at a 90 deg angle towards his body, and your leg over the neck should almost be straight.

  • @HyeDaViT

most people i have grappled with are slow to get a correct triangle, this is great for when they have started to put one on but arent in correct position. just be fast about.

  • i love your videos your good at what u do thanks for the tips

  • you can fall back into a leg lock after that right? that would be the most sensible thing to do. i nver would have thought to do that. wow cool stuff thanks for showing me all these helpful videos. i appreciate them.

  • chael didn't put the legs over

  • this looks so dam easy but once you in the choke and you cant breathe u cant think staight

  • @rawshawty123 But if you practice the move repeatedly then it becomes second nature so there will be no need to think about it.

  • its harder for this to work if the guy performing the triangle is doing everything right...in this video he doesnt have the triangle all the way locked up, and hes not using his arms. You guys should do a real demonstration, as if its a mma match and hes really tryin his best to choke you out, try get out of that.

  • Chael Sonnen tried this when silva had him in a triangle..... unfortunatly it didnt work lol

  • @SOADfan1825 Yeah, I agree with you. You have to protect the arm or else you're gonna get triangle armbared

  • uhh.. the easiest way to survive a triangle is to put your hands on your head to push your neck farther up and relax, travis lutter did this against anderson silva, though lutter still lost he lasted a long time while in the choke.

  • @diablo2items wasnt the choke that got luter it was the repeated downward elbows

  • @BF1 read my comment before replying next time.

  • @diablo2items

true b/c you will be allowing them o waste their energy, but u put your self in danger at every moment b/c they may push your hand across your neck at any moment. I would suggest that after you have tried the other methods or between thinking of what to do next if your first attempt fails.

  • easiest way i counter a triangle is... posture! just sit straight up as hard as you can. just dont extend your arms other wise they make you tap by arm bar

  • Have you watched Jason MacDonald vs Demian Maia ? Sometime during the fight Jason was caught in a Triangle and kinda did an inverted sit and pry, if I'm not mistaken

  • uhm, but my friend pulls my head in the triangle choke, you just use your legs. How do I escape then?

  • Man do these escapes work. these guys present a series of escapes and I've used about two with great results ... One thing good to remember is your bodtype . A person should view a technique and think of it as a template and then modify it to your body type, height ,and weight.

  • i would slam my opponent like rampage did it to ricardo arona :DD

  • cool i saw a video of mike swick teaching this move to Marines stationed in Iaq

  • Always seemed to get caught in triangle chokes.. Did this, pretty easy counter

  • That's pretty cool, ima try that next time ty

  • Triangle choke escape : Rampage jackson slam :D

  • thanks for the post, that's a very effective escape maneuver, I seem to give up triangles a lot so I'll have to practice that one.

  • Sonnen tried this against Silva. Didn't work out for him obviously.

  • Quick question, in the first demonstration he squats down and hooks his legs on top of the opponents chest and crosses his ankles. In the second the ankles aren't crossed. Now i know from rear guard if the ankles are crossed a triangle lock can be put on the crossed ankles and submission obtained, can this be transferred to this situation?

  • i learned something like this at my academy but we have a way to stand up from it. i cant tell you how but it works well, you guys are awesome.

  • chael sonnen tried this on the anderson silva fight but i think he was also in a armbar but this could work

  • @GrappleGrip thats true im gonna try this out in bjj class today.. lol which starts in an hour!

  • I think thats the escape chael sonnen went for when silva caught him? :-/

  • I think Sonnen tried to do this to escape Silva's triangle but ended up in an armlock.

  • @CloudIXLiobird yeah he fell on his side, which just caused the lock to be tighter and make it easier to transfer to arm lock

  • Good escape. But as a white belt I can't do leg locks (that's how it is under Louisiana Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Federation rules, I don't know if that's how it is under other rules), so how could I be able to finish after I escape?

  • I tried this but got in an armlock from the triangle position. Do you move to a specific side to prevent the lock while you pry?

  • I got a question, why do you need to grab your own hand? Will it not work if you press against his belly? Thanks

  • im sure submissions101 has a video on this but another way to escape is from 0:28 . stand up. grab onto guys left arm with both hands. place your heel into his armpit. and sit back. does it have a name?

  • will this work if the guy is pulling down on the back of my head? thanks for the vid =)

  • I wish I had seen this before I got choked out...

  • This works, I escaped 2 nites ago, BUT, I did not cross my ankles, never liked to do that.

How ever, this escape end in a scramble.

  • On the first demonstration you started to cross your feet when you put them on his chest (from then on you didnt), is there a risk of getting ankle locked from that? and I had another question but I forgot what the hell it was!

  • If only someone had sent this video to Fedor...

  • Holy Shit, awesome idea... Will try tomorrow night.

  • The way I have seen it the arm goes over the head like your answering the phone but more center

  • i tried this escape in a submission match and i went to a leg lock after i laid on my back and won the match. great escape!

  • Great techniques man i love your guys videos i wish you had a dvd set or something ive started doing alot more ground work and this has helped me alot ! can u guys do a series about passing the gaurd

  • great counter.

  • Comment removed

  • I have a question, when I put my heels on his belly, I think it is pretty good position for him, he can do leg lock doesn´t he?? I think think this is super escape from triangle but I m affraid of leg lock. Thx for help :)

  • you guys r boss as hell. i watch u before i roll for some extra tricks up my sleeve

  • if you keep your hands on them, even if they're clasped, would you not then be in danger of them grabbing the arm for an armbar?

  • dood you guys are AWESOME, Im a leg lock guy and this is AMAZAZING for breaking the triangle, but does this have a high success % on the tepee or deadbolt?

  • This is sick! I hate when people and or schools post escapes that are too complicated or so flashy you know they wont work in real life or a tournament. Keep it simple. When youre in the shit you go into caveman mode. You dont have time to think of all the super fancy, flashy shit some places teach you. This and Bas Ruttens triangle escape to knee bar are by far the two best and most practical escapes Ive ever seen.

  • would u reccomend crossing the feet or no? i think it would put u in a bad position but i havent been doin this to long just about a yr or so

  • @ Curatalo506 same here haa .

  • I remember I woul try this and i kept getting mounted everytime, so i just stopped using it.

And now i se in the video, you're supposed to put your feet on them, just so they can't sit up into mount.

    haha, wow

  • all relies on attacker not having head control

  • @odds87 Well, the point is to recognize the triangle and counter it before it is deep. If he's controlling your head, odds are he's deep in and you're gonna tap. ha. This works good, if you can get your head up and keep your opponet from getting it sunk in deep. It also works good on a tight triangle if he's not too strong.

  • Well, this is reeeally hard vs a tight triangle.

  • the dood dosent have a good triangle in the first place.

  • @perdedor3571

Then do this before it gets too good.

Most people can't put you into an instant triangle unless your like a stickman, even then any resistance could leave his leg across your back rather than your neck.

If you let yourself get into a "good triangle" then your counter is to tap...lol

  • nice escape... love the videos keep them coming!

  • I really would like to take some classes on that any body have any idea where I can go... I m in Washington DC area

  • look up jiu jitsu gyms in your area theres bound to be one

  • im pretty sure hed still be able to prop up on you and get mount or triangle from top even tho u put ur hands on his stomach thats not gonna be enough to keep him down.

  • If you don't get your feet on their torso, which is actually quite hard, they can easily get a triangle from top on you

  • DAMN! Had I know how to escape! i wouldn't have submitted today in Randori.

  • i tried this and forgot,,and my appoint put mye in a freakin knee bar!!!!

  • I would not recommend to cross your feet on the persons torso ,because if the person is strong enough he could clap down on your ankles just as if someone crosses their feet when taking your back, it can hurt your ankles. I would try to put to bottom of my feet together or put them in his arm pits while pulling back

  • ill try it out man, but anyone who actually closes their triangle unlike the guy that was demonstrating probably wont fall for this

  • watch the fight Roger Gracie vs Jacare. Jacare escapes this way.

  • nah it works

once his butt hits the ground and sit, theres no way he can get the submission off. worse comes to worse itll be annoying, or may put strain on ur back if he does pull on ur head from the sitting position , but it wont be enough to make u tap,

and the laying back thing is just to way to break it once uve alrdy canceled his submission

this is actually a better way to then posturing up becuz he cant switch to an armbar

excellent trick! ill definitely use it next tournament!!

  • seems like you can use this for a arm bar as well but you have to do it quicker before he raises his hips to sink it in

  • Awesome move a couple questions though. I notice he isnt grabbing onto your head. Do you have to start this escape before he grabs your head or is it still possible to get out? If he does grab onto your head does it really just come down to whoever is stronger?

  • if he was tight on u would u snap ur back doing that ? ..

  • only if you have a frail back and he had alot (i mean ALOT) of weight on you.

otherwise, if he's tight, chances are he comes up when you stand up, one thing i've been taught is, if you and your opponent are tight and locked up, you become one body (in a sense)

  • i found a great way to get out the triangle , i like to grab the lapel of their gi with my free hand , or pull on one of their arms in nogi ,then as their head raises up , put my foot next their head and then triangling them as well or even just clasping you feet together underneath his back , if you pull your body back as you do it its similar to this escape , the pressure just breaks open their legs , but the bonus being that alot of the time you will be left in more advantageous postion ,

  • you should make a video of this move gamerman135

  • i love jiu-jitsu

    =D

  • these vids are awsome, thanks!

  • seems cool.

ppl, has any1 try this yet? it seems to me that it doesnt work in a real fight when he pry.

  • Really? Here it is in action...this isn't some 'pretend move' that only works on video:

Look up ADCC 2005 Roger Gracie vs Xande-the world's best. You can BET this world class tight!

  • When yuenj01 wrote real fight i think he's talking about a fight with punches kicks kness elbows not a grappling match.

  • Yeah I remember that fight. Xande Ribeiro had a triangle fully sunk he was side on AND he had Gracie's leg underhooked! Gracie should've been toast. He used THIS technique to escape...From a world champion! That is pretty much as strong an endorsement that you can get for any technique!

  • Yes...that's it! Funny thing about the internet-everyone has an opinion and can voice it no matter what the facts are.

  • @Submissions101 Tell me about it ;)

  • @Submissions101 Remember chael sonnen tried this escape when he was fighting anderson silva, beat him for 5 rounds and got caught in the triangle, didn't work for him but he didn't get in close enough, he should've watched this haha- really helpful videos lads thumbs up for subs 101

  • @b0ris360

Great fact. Xande is an amazing grappler and escaping a full on triangle with an underhook is just unthinkable. So YES, this definitely works if done properly.

  • sorry 4 yuenj01, i dont know this guy, but all moves on your profile are really great some of them r to advanced for somer ppl to understand, but i think ur moves are realistic, simple and powerful, so please keep updating you web site and ur profile, and discard this comments

PD. I'll wish u all of da best

  • Hey what would you recommend as the highest rate of success triangle espace?

  • Thanks dude, i tried it today on a bigger guy and it worked. thanks!

  • it works, but i find it works better if you put your feet into his armpits and push him away and then pry. also when you stand up if youre quick enough you can sink your feet into his armpits and stand straight up. that ones a bit trickier because he can hook your feet if you arent careful and push you over.

  • yes it works. this is my go to triangle escape. And it works with striking too he cant hit you from that far away. Another detial not covered here:

Make sure you squeeze his thigh like a vice it loosens the triangle making it easier to explode out.

  • @yuenj01 Yea I use this all the time. Granted it's not as easy as it looks in the video. You will be sitting there prying for quite awhile but your not passing out, which is the important part.

  • @yuenj01 I use this escape all the time. Works, just not as easy as in the video of course. You will be sitting there prying for awhile but your also not going to sleep. It'll get you out, just leaves in some ridiculous scramble at the end, but hey, better than getting choked

  • @yuenj01 no it works i tried the triangle choke 2 a guy in my judo class he did this n got out.....but the next class i just held his head close 2 me n pulled his arm up high n he tapped =)

  • @yuenj01 someone escaped my triangle in a tournament last year using this

  • @yuenj01 Works great. I use it all the time, but have long legs. Seems to work well if you cross one leg over his neck to opposite side of head, discovered by accident, but again, I have long legs.

  • @yuenj01

yea, i actually used this move basically to get out of my 3rd ammy fight

  • @yuenj01

    just looked up the video

@ 2:28 or so the move for the pry starts pretty cool!!

  • don't you leave your ankles/feet exposed for stuff when you do that?

  • yeah, but would you rather be choked out?

  • I teach something similiar to my guys, buy we stand and put a knee in the taint and then sit straight down and pry. We call it, charmingly enough, "The Taint Smasher". Puts them in a more uncomfortable position.

  • Roger Gracie performed something similar against Xande I think it was Xande, Roger sat back but scooted forward and then began to pull back escaping his trapped arm through the now open legs of Xande it was brillant.

  • at the end could u turn it into a ankle lock? if he just slid his hands down?

  • that tri-angle ant even on properly

  • Ancle lock...

  • haha shit this might really help i always get caught in this with this guy

  • hehhe
