" And the so-called "tricky' stuff really isn't that hard to do"...huh? I guess you have posted videos showing you doing this "tricky" stuff and demonstrating how it's not hard to do? Otherwise you have simply commented on your opinion of what is good and what is not on the 5-string and we are supposed to accept that fact? Not!! Unless you can produce a similiar video of Scruggs or Reno doing this, then I don't accept your opinion.
I saw Raymond at a huge bluegrass festival in Indiana when I was a teenager back in the 80's. I had been playing banjo for about a year at that time. There were all kinds of famous bluegrassers there but I had never heard of Raymond at that point. I gotta tell you, Raymond was on stage for what seemed like only a few minutes but he blew EVERYBODY away; the crowd went crazy for Raymond. He made every other banjo player at that place seem like a neophyte.
I play banjo,30 years now,Scruggs style with some of the new licks throwed in and a little of my own. With that said, let me say that Raymond can play very well at his own style,BUT its not for me,I dont like it at all, really,I cant stand it.But thats my opinion,If you like it,that is your right, and I have my right to not like it.In my opinion,Terry Baucom and Steve Dilling are awesome.
Ok, I understand that you prefer a more "basic" banjo style. One that doesn't stray too far from the Scruggs model from 50 years ago. I further understand that you throw a few "new" licks in occassionally. I also understand that if anyone does anything other than that basic style, you really can't stand it. So I ask one question, why are you posting about a video that takes everything that you believe in and blows its? Glutton for punishment?? In my opinion, I think so!!
@MP60 I don't buy it. His three finger roll is as smooth as Earl's was back in the 40's, 50's and 60's. And the so-called "tricky' stuff really isn't that hard to do. I've been listening to banjo players since 1947 and his thumb runs and two finger runs, if you compare, I think was borrowed from Don Reno. Reno learned the "three-finger" style from Snuffy Jenkins and when he got out of the Army, Scruggs was on the radio with Bill Monroe, so Reno decided to come up with his own style.
I met Raymond at a service station in Cherokee NC back in the 70's, had my banjo on my motorcycle, got Raymond to show me some licks on it. I didn't understand a thing he showed me, found out later he had developed his own style of picking and it was fast! I think Maggie Valley NC is named after his mom, he played in a band with his brothers back then , he has come a long ways!
I have played guitar for 25 years,,been in bar bands, done some studio work, and yes, thought I was the next Buckethead,,,at 44 years old,,I have focused on only metal, but asked to assist on a local country project,,at first,,I laughed, then got beat like a bitch by a local 72 year old banjo player,,ya,,school was in,,I pretty much needed an wambulance once he fukd me up, but again, he only opened my musical interests,,not my ass,,thank God,,,and at 44..i discovered Bluegrass
Is he still alive? I watched all the vids I could find of him and in a few he had aged quite a bit. Can someone answer me? And does he have any records?
Well considering that this video was shot in the early 80's and some of the other ones you have seen were shot in the last couple of years I would say he has aged just like anyone would in 27 years. And yes he has a lot of different recordings out. And yes he is still living he will be 71 this March 15. Zane Fairchild
I met Raymond in 1977 when I was recording Ole Magnolia at Nick Greens studio there in Denton next to Newport. We talked and Raymond tole me if I ever needed a banjo track to give him a hollow and I thought that was nice commin from one of best Banjo player in the Nation. My friend Jimmy Martin did his last show with Raymond there in Maggie Valley and I was supposed to go but' I diden't make it but' wish I had now. I named my bluegrass band after Raymond and the Crowe Bros...CROW MOUNTAIN
That is a good ole Western North Carolina Man there , One of the best with a 5 String Banjo for sure. I met Raymond a few years back and a really nice person for sure.
Raymond's hero was Don Reno, and this piece is filled with Reno style licks.

Ripping on the banjo like no one else can seems to come more naturally to Mr. Fairchild than scratching his nose......Pretty darn awsome!
Thanks for posting!

Has there ever been a better exponent of banjo than Raymond? Has to be one of the greatest of all time; if not the greatest.
