My late father served on the Enterprise CV6. He kept the stories close to his vest, but the ones he did tell were pretty intense. One time were watching the series "Victory at Sea", when he, a man of few words, said, "OMG, that's me". It was a clip of a plane crashed while landing on the flight deck and the young sailor jumping out of the way apparently was my Pop.
This episode does not really reflect the truth that the US navy in fact suffered a major defeat at the battle of Savo Island. If the Japanese navy commander were not over-cautious, it would have wiped out the rest of the US transportation fleet as well. The US fleet command seemed to be not as competent as the Japanese counterpart. But US learned quick from this defeat and its industrial power eventually overwhelmed the Japanese.
if america sets a full scale war like WW2 they kick ass for sure even the defeat at vietnam and iraq the suckers don't fight like soldier but a coward!
@stephentsang2000 Normandy was not luck. Midway was not luck. Leyte was not luck. My point is, these battles and campaigns are clear demonstrations that luck had little or nothing to do with the American victories. In each battle, the Americans faced odds that jeopardized their chances in such a way that luck would play a trivial role in their success. Did Deep Blue beat Kasparov by luck? No, Kasparov was defeated by wit and skill. The Americans possessed wit and skill and that's how we won.
@stephentsang2000 I'd have to agree with BigBoyFatso, the American pilots & soldiers were just so much more skilled than their brainwashed Japanese counterparts. Also in Vietnam, the USA achieved all military goals, it was politically the North Vietnamese won. Although I would agree with you on Korea :)
@xxxTruthHurtsxxx That is simply not True...The japanese had one of the best navys and navy pilots in the world, however after midway they lost most of their experienced cadre of pilots, most of the navy aces which would leave them with green replacements... one example : The use of the D3A Val dive bomber... before midway they had a hit ratio of up to 80%, after most experienced pilots died there, its effieciency dropped rapidly...
@IIIJG52 "however after midway they lost most of their experienced cadre of pilots"....true, not very skilled after all were they? The Japanese military had it's greatest successes in the late 19th & early 20th century when China & Russia's empires were at their collapsing points and Japan had recently modernized. But once China & Russia got organized after their revolutions, even Japan couldn't beat China, and they were certainly no match for the USA. No doubt that USA was going to win.
@xxxTruthHurtsxxx Yes they were BUT however the chinese wouldnt have been able to hold on for so long without the allied support with weapons supplies and volunteers (like AVG).. And yes they were Very skilled, trained for months /years and did get some combat experience (though against outclassed enemies) in China and in Manchuria against Russia (Khalkin Ghol incident)...Japan did Not want the war with The USA but they were forced to it by Embargos and all these things.
@IIIJG52 The Chinese only received 5% of the total Allied budget, basically only rifles and artillery. China didn't have tanks or fighter planes, against Japan's full arsenal. It was Chinese manpower and spirit that kept the Japanese at bay. Weapons wise, Japan totally outclassed China, but were never able to defeat China. They made initial gains but it became a stalemate after about 2 years. And even though Japan didn't want war with the USA, they still decided to attack anyways. Stupid mistake
@xxxTruthHurtsxxx i didnt say I think that but that was what the Japanese were thinking back those days !they did get some fighters, mainly the AVG, and some US planes fighting from China... Well what was left for them to do ? without any oil traded from the USA and all its accounts frozen they HAD to do something...which was unfortunately to attack the USA.
@xxxTruthHurtsxxx Japans inability to totally defeat China, was largely due to the fact that the Chinese would fight for a little while and then retreat further into China. China is a huge country, so the main difficulty for the Japanese was one of supply. The longer the supply route, the more trucks, pack animals and men were required to maintain it. China had a terrible road system and bridges often incapable of heavy loads. Plus, there was little in the interior of China that Japan wanted.
@peng1965a The Japanese made many attempts to invade the interior but were defeated. And it doesn't matter what strategies you use to fight as long as you win the war. The chinese armies knew their strengths and weaknesses so they used what they had to fight Japan. It's pointless to argue this, Japan was totally defeated in everything they set out to accomplish. They got their navies and armies wiped out and got their country napalmed and nuked.
@xxxTruthHurtsxxx I have a book written by Gen. Stilwell. He talks about the difficulty of getting the various Chinese factions to co-operate with each other and with Allied forces. In one case, he comments on being impressed by a superbly equipped and trained Chinese artillery regiment. The next day, before the battle, the regiment was nowhere to be found. When he questioned the Chinese commander, he was told they were withdrawn to because they wanted to keep them safe. Such cases are typical.
@xxxTruthHurtsxxx They knew that if they could not destroy the US Pacific fleet they wouldnt have a real chance as Yamamoto said : i can let them hold their breath for 6 months, after that i cant guarantee for anything! that was the idea behind Pearl harbor...imagine if the plane would have worked and the Carriers would have been in Pearl harbor at that time...Japan would have laster some years longer, im sure, maybe even the US would have asked for peace..who knows
You obviously don't understand American resolve, the US would have NEVER sued for peace with Japan. We were ready to wipe every Japanese off the face of the Earth. Remember we were ready and willing to continue nuking the island over and over again. We had already incinerated 67 Japanese cities before the A-Bombs.
@stephentsang2000 I can just imagine what would happen if you ruled the Navy back then, with no choice of peace, you would've surrendered or lost first, unlike the skills of the generals aboard the carriers and making tough decision
@xwrn This is a documentary on a ship that turned the tide of war in the Pacific and USS Enterprise is the most decorate ship in American history 20 battlestars, Presidential Citation, and the British even awarded her with the British Admiralty Pennant.
The narrator is just trying to explain to an audience of people ranging for kids to old people about what is happening. His job is more difficult then you think it is.
Also USS Enterprise is a ship that would get the job done.
the only thing I don't like about this episode is that they keep saying Enterprise is the only carrier left and the others have gone down. They forget the Saratoga is still around, just damaged.
@xwrn I agree with this. I like military history but a certain degree of solemn reverence for the people being killed on both sides needs to form a consistent undertone in war documentaries. These people aren't dieing for our entertainment.

Well touching up on what every one else said, I believe it depends on the objective of the craft. Like dokaw said, if the mission requires retrieval of craft or a "hit and run" focus (strike then flee) destroyers and/or light cruisers fit perfectly. However if the objective requires long durations of time in enemy territory or greater firepower, carriers/ battleships come into play.
I am never going to say that Japan was a good boy at that time. I am never going to justify war crimes Japanese soldiers did. However, I want you to watch "Battle 360 E5 Enterprise vs Japan Part 2/6". According to it, US sailors killed most of Japanese survivors floating on the waves after battle.
