  • it doesnt look a thing alike xD! putting Harajuku on it doesn't make it Harajuku, fool.

  • That guy they interviewed has designed some butt ugly ass clothes.

  • my god if you're gonna do an interview on this you topic you might wanna research how to pronounce the name correctly first!

  • S.W.A.G.

    Something We Asians Got

  • Why are they pronouncing Harajuku like that?

  • Don't you think if it's "street" they got it from the streets where it started from?

  • So in order to find my own identity (???) and to express myself I need to dress like an idiot, dye my hair in at least 3 different colors and get some piercings ?

Seriously what's so bad about being normal ?

  • It's more pronounced as Haradzuhk, in stead of Haradzookoo

  • creative ^^

  • they look like there all half black or sumthen lol iz cool

  • i love harajuku! <3

  • I think he should incorporate more of the Harajuku look to his clothes because they look kind of plain, nothing really special about them. I can understand that he wanted it to be toned down, but he toned it down WAAAAYYY too much it doesn't even look remotely inspired by the Harajuku fashion smh....O well at least he tried you guys

  • His designs were really...boring.

  • i use to work at the smart and final right next the boba spot....that was my spot!!!!! damn i mis home...but now i'm in puck ass ga...uuhhhh:(

  • ....i honestly dont see much relation between his designs and the harajuku fashion...just because they're both wearing leggings doesnt mean that one is an inspiration of the other. x.x'

  • Be Different express yourself Yay!! ^_^lol

  • 1:22

  • I appreciate that he likes their style...but he focused on the least interesting aspects of their outfits to be inspired by! Like that 2:13...what about focusing on the super-bright saturated and pastel colors, the hair ornaments, or the mixture of patterns! his designs are so watered-down that they end up looking like boring western casual clothing! what's the point?

  • Watered down was exactly what I was thinking when I saw his designs. Along with Mediocre.

  • wow did they just try to find the oldest fruits scans they could or what? that guy's clothing line is hysterically bad, i thought it was a joke at first. :| and half of the ~harajuku style~ that they showed is visual kei cosplay.

  • @yummycandi actually, that's how they dress, and visual kei cannot be a cosplay 'cause it's a style on it's own

  • @BLOODBATHDAVID i realize that this video was from 2006, but the styles had still changed a lot from what they're showing in the video. i recognize some of the pictures from old-ass fruits magazines. and, i meant cosplaying guys from visual kei bands.

  • Don't worry harajuku, i'll be right there!

  • finally someone smart knows what harajuku is

  • Mmmmmm bubble tea.... I havnt drunk it in so looong!! =S that's not good... lol xP

  • don't catch where's that inspiration

  • I want a kitty ear hatt :P

  • You used so many pictures from the FreshFruits book!!!!

Did Phaidon let you do that!?!? 'cuz half those pictures were from the '90's anyway...

  • umm no mister your clothes suck and look nothing like harajuku at all. =-= shitty mass produced outfites claiming to be harajuku inspired

  • I think most tourists may not realize this, but a lot of those people in Harajuku are cosplaying visual kei bands

  • harajuku=best city in tokyo!!!

  • @rustyxcarbine Harajuku is not a city, it's a ward within the city of Tokyo....

  • @wickedlady4180

i know. but i didnt know what to call it other than city.

  • @wickedlady4180 actually tokyo itself is a metropolis, made up of many cities. the actualy 'tokyo' is only one train stop. so, technically, it could be called a city.

  • You are your best stylist, I do exactly what she said at the end of the video really. I just sling stuff together and it works. Accesories are the key too. And customisation! :DDD

  • I know what harajuku is, but whats the definition of it

  • gwen stefani is wanna be japanese

  • he wont get anywhere using vomit colors ¬¬'

  • 1:24...LOL!

  • except for the fact that they're human?

  • looks like the japanese are way ahead of hollywood

  • @spacecowboy95 america is so behind when it comes to japan and china and so on :D

  • Harajuku is waaaay more better&clever style than any lame_azz_boring European (which is mostly mass produced) style...I M from Europa and I know what Im talkin about...

There is only few brave designers who like to experiment..everything else is like this faggot on video who is like "Im pierced, I dont know what am i doing but its sooo awesome..and I lived in japan." so fckn what..He still design craPijamas of garment...the only smart thing in video is line from this "skip_lunch" hostes on 2:36

  • It's like these people have pioneered this fashion, as a movement, and an attitude in order to break from a traditional society. Now it's being ripped off and mass marketed by some di ck head for people who haven't a clue about it. For profit. It's like when you see a person wearing Ramone's shirt, who hasn't a clue about the band.

  • @vanzemljak Yeah, and then she goes and gets bubble tea.

  • thanks for this video it helped alot with my japan research project :)

  • model is ugly

  • yes, not really harajuku style!

  • i knooooow it looks like a guyyy...w8...is it a guy???

  • haha from 2:23 on is all this video needs to be.

  • don't compare american fashion with japanese harajuku fashion because they're very much opposite, if america's lifestyle is always on the go, the japanese harajuku is laid back, american style is kinda always self conscious and harajuku has that 'hell-i-care' attitude,,,which i so love..it's the most exciting way to be unique and freeing one's self...

  • thats what I find so amazing about japanese street style

  • Harajuku is just culture shock to the max...it definitely gets lost in translation w/n Western fashion styles. But I lived in Tokyo and it grew on me, what can I say :-) I just honestly think they try too hard to be "American" (or at least that's what I got in Tokyo) and their fashion is definitely trendy....but is years behind what Americans & ESPECIALLY what European fashion does

  • Most of the pics were from Fresh fruits and Gothic and lolita. I wonder if he's the photographer from the book D=

  • most of the picture that ere shown were cosplay so most of it is diy

  • If it's DIY, then why is there a fashion line of harajuku clothing? Shouldn't people just throw the crap that they find in a discount clothing store together into an outfit?

  • they try to be different but because everyone wants to be different in the same way, at the end they are all the same, buying brand clothes and all looking the same.

  • If by "Harajuku clothing line" you meant the Gwen Stefani Harajuku girl/lover t-shirt at the end, you are horridly mistaken.

  • The clothes he makes look terrible haha.

  • ugly models and clothes... u cant copy a piece of harajuku...

  • So you take a fashion movement that is "individual and unique" and then you mass market it...you are a gay douche.

  • MANA COSPLAY.

    ew

  • Mana?

And yeah.. it is a bit odd.

    But photography wise.

It would be fun to take pictures of them.

  • ... the ugly quarterback-looking gothic lolita

    but it's not him it's a cosplayer.

    an ugly one.

  • Mana-sama's cloting is amazing! He is the queen of gothic lolita

  • This is just.. Wicked

  • hahaha:))))

  • My style is a mix of 60-70's continental jetset, fascism and 19th century imperial styles, and people in Europe think I'm crazy.

Even when I don't really do things much differently from others, except for wearing a cape instead of a trench over a suit for example, people think it's "too much".

I even make sure my clothes have perfect fit, unlike all those mainstream bankers in too large suits/too long pants, but I'm still considered abnormal.

Why can't people just dress the way they want?

  • dude ur so right Oo

  • i think this thing is more based on all the fashion that already existed, from Austrian style till ww2 flight style, one question btw, what does Japan mean and whoever named it that, coes the real name of japan is Nihon

  • actually its nipon and it means nation of the rising sun

  • both are correct

  • from what I remember, my Japanese teacher told my class that "Japan" came from the Chinese pronounciation of Nihon/Nippon, like "Jipon" or something like that. I could be wrong though

  • Well I don't like his style XD

  • a fat ass reporting about another fat ass that has no sense of fashion what so ever lol retards >:/

  • @SBok13

  • Um America is mixed.

    We have people from everywhere.

So how can america be "copying" ??

  • Bubble tea is so good XD Haha just go to a vietnamese resturant, there sure to have it

    >:D

Ahaha I love Harajuku kids, I hope it doesn't adapt here in USA and I bet it wont. I hate Gwen for giving it the wrong image though, her stuff isn't Harujuku at ALL.

  • Comment removed

  • LOL! Yuo, kinda the same in europe, not as potent tho I must say, if your different you get picked on, so kids dont do it!

  • 0:41 Haha Rukis costume from Zetsu! =D

  • guys, don't be brainwashed by those photos of people wearing very extreme clothes

those people are the one's who take it to extreme and every other people are just like how everyone dresses in the US

  • the original scene kids came from japan

thts pretty kool in a way lol =)

  • lol mira mesa, thats where i live :B

  • love harajuku!

  • i want to dress harajuku... but with what.

  • yep..,

    my too..

in holland is no harajuku fashion..

and i wand to dress myself like a harajuku girl.. but i can't buy it, i can't find that style in the dress store.. -.-''

    *crying*

  • ah, I know! D:

I really want to dress like that too.

But no shops here with those kind of clothes, as far as I know. T_T (I also live in Holland btw.)

  • yea, the closest thing I found was a Hello Kitty Store... :(

  • ......MAKE YOUR CLOTHS!

    street style

as in you putt together your own clothing. You cant "buy" harajuku.

  • i go to Japan at least twice a year! if an Old Navy where to be placed in japan could be considered harajuku. if you conprehended my state ment you whould have taken "as in you putt together your own clothing" into consideration, i was not saying go sew your own clothes but to obtain "different" clothing and piece together the outfit. The whole goal to being Harajuku is to be different. You cant be different and stand out if you are buying the exact same outfit as another, those "harajuku" stores

  • only give you the materials to obtain the look. You will not find one "harajuku" kid that shops at only one of those stores. Simply to achieve his/her style they went to different stores and putt together their out fit.

Dont think im right? why dont you ask someone with japanese family, oh wait! A jap is talking to you right now!!

  • this is true...

    nice use of origionality guy...

""Dont think im right? why dont you ask someone with japanese family, oh wait! A jap is talking to you right now!!""

didnt I say that to you?? humm... nice! btw, japanese don't like to be called "Japs" its insulting...

  • its called banter or mockery.

btw i have NEVER met a Japanese person who was insulted by the term "jap". There is no racial slurs behind the word.

  • i think you are poorly mistaken my friend...

  • no, American Japanese people commonly take it as an offense due to that what soldiers called them during WWII.

Jap is just short for japanese and is more easy to fit into a sentence with fluency.

Does im a japanese sound beter then im a jap?

Yea maybe a japanese person wouldnt like to be called a jap by an american, thought there is no slur like with words people use for Africans and Hispanics,(IE the N word) Even though these slurs have a double standard. U think im mistaken, ur pathetic.

  • @SBok13 Try shopping on ebay. They have lots of harajuku stuff. The UK doesnt have much in the way of harajuku so i suggest that you pick a dress that you like and customize it by sewing beads on or cutting the shape slightly different and accessorizing with loads of beads and pretty jewellery. If you still cant find the style you want look on youtube for tutorials on how to make your own clothes and things. Look in my favourites if you want :) hope that helps a bit

  • american fasion is so gay.......accept it

  • do they have "bobalicious" in LA?

    i'm craving some boba......

  • omg bobba is soo good especially toro flaover

  • I KNOWW!!

    :)

I love taro! I like Mango flavor too! It's really good!

  • lol shut up.

    it all started in asia.

  • lol wut?

It actually did come from the Western part of the world. The original idea at least. For example, anime/manga's idea came from comics/cartoons. Same goes for western style clothing.

  • manga has been around since the first japanese artists picked up a brus, long b4 westernization

  • Manga are comics and print cartoons, in the Japanese language and conforming to the style developed in Japan in the late 20th century. In their modern form, manga date from shortly after World War II, but they have a long, complex pre-history in earlier Japanese art..

  • america also copying japanese alrite -.-

    america loves japanese hairstyle...

Am i right -.- they even copy the hairstyle, dance move,cosplay...-.-

    so shut up

  • It's also obvious that those kids like copying from other cultures. Or they would still be in Kimono's and what not that my ancestors wore. Just as some Americans like Japanese hairstyle, the same can be said for Japanese liking what Americans do.

  • american sucksss.....!!!

  • LOL.

And you think Japan is truly that much better?

    :/

  • yeahhh....

  • at least japanese have culture -.-..

  • LOL.

    I am Japanese.

  • if those kids at 1:24 came dressed like that to my city they would of got fucked up

  • lol yeah thats why u wont see us in the ghetto

  • asian fashion FTW~! specialy japanese fashion!

  • haha bobalicous i live like 2 min away from that. that place is jus for the wack gangsters and little kids... its all bout green tea house and tapex. SD

  • aw, man. i can't believe they didn't specifically identify the Japanese Visual Kei scene... I didn't know you could talk about Harajuku with out mentioning that. At least half of those people were wearing costumes from Visual Kei bands... That really annoys me.

  • um.....u pronounce that word wrong..........

  • Wear what you want and not what people like.

  • Lol. "Harajuku, what is it? A Gwen Steffani song?"XD

Nice vid, cool that asia got influence on USA^^ (I'm not american so I diden't knewXD)

  • kawaiii

  • Japanese are the best!!!!!!! <333

  • shut up u fucking gay!!!

  • harajuku does not equal scene in anyway what-so-ever. harajuku isn't a style only, it is a whole subculture of expression and uniqueness with no rules or regulations.

  • Really? Then tell me why the scene hair is an exact copy of Ganguro hair? Whether you want to admit it or not, scene is definitely influenced by harajuku, especially due to the fact that REAL scene girls are Japan and manga fans while the fake ones like Kiki Kannibal are in it just for the fame.

  • Thank you for breaking it down for the uninformed.

  • Hahaha

    are they serious._.

Has azns influence usa over tehre?

    cuz seriously

    That is awesome x]

Azns wuld be like a global race O_O

    How kool cna that be

(no racism here =-= i havnt mentioned any race except mine)

  • This vid got me really inspired :3

  • OMG 1:44

  • XD nice

  • japan wins

  • you guys DO realize that almost ALL images in the beginning where all just cosplay from visual kei bands?

  • yup XD

  • BUBBLE TEA!

  • I'm American and I utterly love harajuku fashion and I can't stand the fact that everytime I search 'harajuku' something from Gwen Stefani shows up. T3T

I asked some of my friends if they knew what harajuku really was ... they said she made it...

Just another thing America has attempted to steal from Japan!

Just like 'scene' or 'emo'. I won't have it!

    VISUAL KEI/OSHARE KEI FTW! o(^///^)o

  • She sorta introduced it to the western community.

  • I love bubble tea!

  • yesh im azn!

    go harajuku!!!!!

cant wait to go to tokyo, japan again

    total SHOPPING!!!!!

  • gr8t

  • どうも ありがとうございます。 (^^)v

  • This is another reason for me to see Japan... rice paddies & harajuku!

  • i wish this harajuku comes to the UNITED KINGDOM!!!!!!!!!!

  • actually the united kingdom is doing pretty well on that front! we have a huge lolita community, japanese rock nights, a parapara club an lots of visual kei bands play london ^^

  • izittttttttttt....oh good...thx...=)

  • if you like japanese visual bands be sure to see an cafe next year! you have to get tickets soon though ^^ also if you're interested in lolitas i recoment joining livejournal an searching for the main lolita communities ^^

  • thx for da info!

  • Also there are some japanese brands in london aren´t they ? I mean super lovers...and the harajuku fashion scene LOVES london !

  • they love london but superlovers closed years ago, they didn't do well enough over here

  • HOLY COW! I LIVE THERE! :D

  • I'm a huge fan of Japanese visual kei AND Gwen and after seeing her Harajuku Lovers collections I think that all she's doing is paying tribute to something she admires, the expressive and creative energies that people show off in the Harajuku district. Unfortunately it's the majority of her sheltered fans that seem to think that Harajuku is a style created by her.

  • Love Harajuku!!!!!!!!

    All cosplay?

  • :o urban outfitters! best store ever! :D

  • That's a load of bullshit. Visual Kei was started by the band X Japan and others. Later, other bands rose up and improved the style. Now, fans start trying the visual kei scene. The other's are other fashions like decora, kigurumi, ext. Please learn more about Harajuku's fashion before posting this comment.

  • I wanna go to Japan!!! Harajuku....

  • FUCK. I wanna move back to Tokyo. :(

  • gwen did not create the harajuku fashions, but thanks to her, a lot of ppl learned about it.

  • True, but it still created more stereotypic gossip and stereotypes. But, I never got inspired from Gwen. My sisters got me into it and visual kei. x]

  • I hate how some people think Gwen is just so harajuku and how she started it. She didn't start harajuku and she had nothing to do with it.

  • I agree with you.....to a degree.

This is where you and Gwen Stefani seem to be on the same page. You think Harajuku is a fashion style [or maybe you just made the same typo twice, IDK]

    Harajuku is a PLACE.

  • No I know it is a place. She made certain clothing that Harajuku. Because she did have nothing to do with the place and where/how the teens dress there. Everyone says thats her thing and Japanese people took it. When that is completely wrong. When I said she was Harajuku I was copying what some of her fans say and try to copy. I know it is a place for sure. I'm not that big of an idiot. But I also think that she is a celebrity weeaboo. Even though her fans wont like me saying that.

  • I agree with you more than a hundred percent.

It's very annoying when I see my classmates try the style, yet they do not know of it's origin nor the background of 'Harajuku fashion.'

It's very annoying and I know a lot of people feel the same way. No offense to Gwen's fans. . .
