My first garbage plate was cheeseburger mac salad & fries. The mac salad was warm and the cheeseburger was cold. Individually, everything was awful but I was told to stir it all together. whuh-? So I stirred it all together and sure enough it was great. When I was done Nick signed the bottom of the plate. Too bad they don't warn you of the gastrointestinal effect ...

All my out of town wedding guests had to make a trip over to see the infamous Nick Tahous -- GQ magazine had a piece on it that month.

My friends from the U of R went there. The food is awful but it was a rite of passage. Part of the charm was that it was in a rotten, dangerous neighborhood (I had a house there). In the 1980s, late at night ,the place was packed with prostitutes and drug dealers. People went there as a test of their braveness.

I can not tell you how much I miss the Cheeseburger plate with mac and home fries. One of my fondest memories was my 3-for day: Egg plate for "breakfast" circa 11am, cheeseburger plate for dinner around 6pm, and a second cheeseburger plate for whatever you call the 4am meal. Even Poots ate 2 that night.
