@Slycooper14 That wasn't what I was getting at. She could steal anything she wanted. Yoko Kanno takes mediocrity and makes it magical and memorable. I had to look up to see what the title of this song was. I will always remember what Cyberbird is.
Also on the Yoko thing. It's theft, simple as that. She never cites any of the songs she takes large passages from and the thing is, the comparisons between some songs are obvious so she REALLY should be giving credit where it's due. Whatever though, if no one wants to take action against her I could care less. Yoko still has some great original music.
@Zetsword No, it's really not as simple as that. I challenge you to prove any of this. Prior warning though, you won't be able to. Yoko hasn't stolen anything. Music like this has been around in one form or another for decades, it only stands to reason that at some point someone is going to make a song that sounds like someone else's song.
@WintersTwilightSky Yes one or even a couple songs are a coincidence, the amount of songs she does it with are not however and there's plenty that sound even more alike than Battersea and that Ghost in the Shell song.
Interesting Cyberbird and Battersea sound almost the same. Instead of being disappointed in Yoko Kanno, I look at it this way. I have another band to listen to: Hooverphonic. :)
But what I despise most is people simply stopping in their tracks and saying "THATS FROM THIS OTHER SONG" and that being the end of the discussion, implying the musician has failed in some sort of way. You don't simply stop and say "Mozart's Dies Irae is just from the original Gregorian chant". You expound on it, and discuss strength and weaknesses. You don't just stop and say "Daft Punks 'Robot Rock' is just a cheap sample of Breakwater's 'Release the Beast' ". You analyze the best you can
@elephantman2222 Exactly: It's similar to a cover song; it's just an alternative version. I highly doubt someone as iconic as Yoko Kanno would have done this without acknowledging it if she was inspired by the other song! Just looking at things like Rise (Kanno's composing, Origa's vocals) and Inner Universe (same as before), not to mention her work with The Seatbelts for Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo - you know she doesn't need to rip anyone off!
When I first discovered that a minority of Kanno's music was borrowed from incredible source material, it was rejuvenating, and I found it did not distract from her talent at all, but rather revealed a passion for music. I don't believe that it resulted from the "music industry" being unthankful, but rather from her being *extremely* thankful! It is our own fault if we don't know where the music came from. When we do find out, it is up to us to decide whether or not the re-use is good or bad.
Also, for further demonstration, Hooverphonic's first hit song, 2Wicky, contains a sample from Isaac Hayes' "Walk on By". Guess what. Isaac Hayes borrowed the vocal for the song "Walk on By" sung by Dionne Warwick. When you stop and look at it, each song is a new creation, some stand further apart than others. Musicians do this ALL the time!! GET OVER IT. Just realize that its been done, get over it, and analyze it for what its WORTH. the damn song for what its worth.
So, what you are implying is that Kanno's music is intentionally based on that of others. Of course you can honor Kanno for putting these styles together in various animes, however most people apparently think that these are her fully own creations, which they simply aren't. I'm not sure if there is some sort of unwritten law in the music business not to cite the music you took as an inspiration, but at least I would expect that. I don't see what would be wrong with that.
Because again, according to you and others, there is nothing for her to be worried about. She could easily cite these references. I suppose they are similar enough to her compositions to say that she definitely has heard them before. But she doesn't mention them. And perhaps others don't do that too. Then maybe I would criticize the whole music business as being naturally unthankful and unrewarding, for it seems to be a more general problem than just one that applies to Kanno.
Interestingly enough, I might go the other direction. People who form the understanding that music never comes from anywhere but the composer's head are making an incredibly daft assumption. To then be suddenly shocked that it has been "borrowed" or "expounded on" is in my view simply a discredit to the listener's ability to think critically, and analyze music, not a discredit to the composer.
And it is an absolute failure to say that Yoko Kanno is lacking in musical talent because of what she has borrowed from places. It is so blood-boilingly stupid. You can't even fathom how musically talented Yoko is, with such a dynamic soundtrack range from the depths of the highest angelic moving modal classic tunes in Escaflowne, to the depths of gurgling Jazz in cowboy bebop, and countless other tunes and captured moods and feelings all perfectly orchestrated for anime, and in general.
The real key to it, with SO much re-hashed material in music and television, is to ask the question: "has this been used cleverly, or reintroduced in a way that is thoughful, well-placed, evocative, etc". To attack someone about "copying" music or other media is absolute mental masturbation. You are simply proliferating your own ego by trying to get people to recognize that "you know where the original source is from". And of course the first is best... right? Not really always.
It pisses me off so much to read about people complaining about music being "copied". What most of you morons don't realize is that 90 percent of what you see in music and television has ALREADY been done, and has CONSCIOUSLY borrowed from something else. As far as music goes, Musical passages have been quoted from the beginning of TIME. The Dies Irae gregorian chant, one of the greatest tunes of all time has been rehashed in so many ways now, from Mozart to Howard Shore.

The Battersea fans are making this into a "Kanno stole" argument too? At least Kanno and this band appreciate music enough to enjoy their works. ' -' I wonder if the two actually heard each other's songs and simply went "Wow, that song sounds good! =D"
I do enjoy Kanno's music, but she shouldn't get more credit than she deserves. She might be good in putting various songs together and change them in a way which appeals to the anime studios that hire her, but I'm afraid that's all you can say without having doubts. I don't know how (in this case) Hooverphonic feels or would feel about it, but I would understand them if they weren't happy about Kanno using their music without paying even the slightest form of credit.
I'm neither bitching nor moaning, I'm just making suggestions. And Hooverphonic not being against it - I'm still not sure if they even know about Kanno - changes nothing about her actions and the questionable morale that the listener or other artists may see in them.
Well, I found her through Pandora, not anime. So, it's not only anime fans that listen to her stuff. Since all of the hype over her copying them, and all the years they've both been out, I think they know about her. Proper credit? Oh yeah, she's going to go and say "Hey guys, I stole this from someone else, even though they don't even sound that similar, please don't sue me." And besides, have you ever though of maybe she hadn't even heard of this song when she wrote it?
Paying proper credit to someone is possible without saying such silly things. According to you, there is no reason for her to be afraid of mentioning the artists she "borrows" her music from, so why not do it? I don't know what you have heard so far, but I've seen some videos here on YouTube which compare songs, and some of them don't just sound fairly similar but almost identical. As for Battersea: It is possible for her to have it heard before if you look at the release date.
To everyone who's saying Yoko Kanno copied this song: that is ridiculous! They aren't THAT similar anyhow and they're in the same GENRE. Music is similar in the same genre by nature! The fact that the vocals are KINDA similar, and not even that much, doesn't mean she copied it. Besides, if she did, they would have sued her. And they didn't, for sure. Same genre, uses the same instruments! So, please stop bitching about something pointless just to "satisfy" your personal online ego.
Yoko Kanno is probably simply unknown to these artist. These aren't the only people she apparently "borrowed" music from. But no one appears to know her aside the anime fans, who are the least who would sue her. And apart from that: She should still pay proper credit to the source of her own music. But she apparently doesn't. She makes it all look like her whole own compositions, which they aren't.
Clint Mansell's theme song of the movie "Requiem for a Dream" is very similar to an unreleased song in the last episode of the second season of GitS:SAC (it starts when they try to arrest Gohda). Then there is the song "Hounds" from Wolf's Rain which is close to Eddie Brickel's "What I am". I also remember an instrumental song from Cowboy Bebop which was apparently not changed in any way by Kanno. There might still be videos here on YouTube which compare her songs, try looking around.
@catstopalyssa I agree. If you compare vocals you'll note that many songs in this electropop/ambient music genre have those ethereal dreamy kind of vocals and there's a number of songs that sound similar vocally speaking. With the instrumentals the use of violins, cellos and drum beats is something thats been done before(Hybrid's Symphony and Finished Symphony).
I wish Yoko Kanno would at least proper mention the artists she "borrows" her music from. You can still respect Kanno for collecting and rearranging this music, but the original artists deserve some attention too.
Unfortunately I can't remember anyone, only Edie Brickell and her song "What I am", which has some similarities to "Hounds" from Wolf's Rain. There once were videos here on YouTube which directly compared songs from Kanno with others. I can see one of these videos in the related videos frame. It's titled "comparing similar songs part1(Yoko Kanno)" and has been uploaded by yuta84001, but it has been disabled in my country by Sony due to copyright issues (at least that's what it says).
@LaymanX Do you WTF youre talking about? Songs are both in the same key. The rhythmic composition is the same (different song structure, but they mirror each other closely). The BPMs on both songs are around 145 BPM. Because one song has an eighth note bass before the other (boom-boom-chuck-chuck-boom-chuck vs boom-boom+boom chuck-chuck-boom-chuck) doesnt make them 'VERY' different.
Heaven and Hell are very easy, at times, to explain... it's the other times when they both are not so easy to explain that we need to be careful of... it's like "the supernatural places"!
yeah, I first heard of "battersea" from the ghost in the shell song. I still love yoko kano and "cyberbird" but it is definitely a blatant rip off of this song
THird watch was a show on NBC, it ran from 1999 to2005 Its about the NYDP,FDNY andEMS all together. WAS a great show. This song plays on the show sums up the whole series at the end.
This is a great song. It is always youtube that leads me to these gems.
This bands songs however seem eclectic. Have they done other songs that sound like this? All the ones that I have heard are a bit weird (thinking of magenta)
yeah. great song... i`m so glad for adding this as third watch`s last epizode soundtrack. thanks to Hooverphonic and huge thanks for all from third watch. I`ll never forget!

Lenariet 1 year ago
@catstopalyssa I agree. If you compare vocals you'll note that many songs in this electropop/ambient music genre have those ethereal dreamy kind of vocals and there's a number of songs that sound similar vocally speaking. With the instrumentals the use of violins, cellos and drum beats is something thats been done before(Hybrid's Symphony and Finished Symphony).

I wish Yoko Kanno would at least proper mention the artists she "borrows" her music from. You can still respect Kanno for collecting and rearranging this music, but the original artists deserve some attention too.
Lenariet 1 year ago 7
@Lenariet do you know any name of the other artists ?
moekin0 1 year ago
@moekin0

Yea, I almost mistakened this for Cyber Bird. I can say I'm a little disappointed, but at least it wasn't completly ripped.
XDeathXSS 1 year ago
The pitch of voice is very similar to Cyberbird.
But the actual beat and rhythm is very different.
LaymanX 2 years ago
@LaymanX Do you WTF youre talking about? Songs are both in the same key. The rhythmic composition is the same (different song structure, but they mirror each other closely). The BPMs on both songs are around 145 BPM. Because one song has an eighth note bass before the other (boom-boom-chuck-chuck-boom-chuck vs boom-boom+boom chuck-chuck-boom-chuck) doesnt make them 'VERY' different.

@LaymanX No you obviously fear arguing with people who actually have a brain.

@NegroMente
Too bad having a similar BPM doesn't mean shit, and the rhythmic composition is not the same at all.

Heaven and Hell are very easy, at times, to explain... it's the other times when they both are not so easy to explain that we need to be careful of... it's like "the supernatural places"!

ghost in the shell fans will probably recognize this as cyberbird, yoko kanno sure does "borrow" a lot of tunes from other artists lol
clairefedfield 2 years ago 8
Yes, I like yoko kanno but I'm not sure how to feel when there are so many melodies that can be recognized as the "model" of hers.
thenearestlocation 2 years ago
yeah, I first heard of "battersea" from the ghost in the shell song. I still love yoko kano and "cyberbird" but it is definitely a blatant rip off of this song

This is a great song. It is always youtube that leads me to these gems.
This bands songs however seem eclectic. Have they done other songs that sound like this? All the ones that I have heard are a bit weird (thinking of magenta)
