@htownhomie06 Oh, i know. Remember, Venus made her pro debut way back in Oct. 1994 at Bank of the West and ended up facing ASV who was then No. 1 in the world and fresh off her US Open win over Graf. Venus, at 14, took a 6-2, 3-1 lead on ASV before showing her youth. She'd go on to beat ASV several times later although ASV was the 1st to beat the Sisters in the same tourney (98 Sydney International semis over Serena & final over Venus). Her comments about them were always less than positive.
@htownhomie06 And the Sisters couldn't stand Sanchez Vicario. Arantxa felt like the younger players need to respect their elders but respect is a two way street. I think Arantxa just resented the fact the Williams Sisters were not afraid of her or the other top players. Venus and Serena had a champion mentality since they were teenagers and Arantxa hated it that Venus and Serena were not afraid of her.
@JordanjamesX haha, yeah, i couldn't have said it better. but that's what made 1997-98 and that Hingis-Kournikova-Williams Gen so cutting edge. Players like MFernandez, Garrison, Novotna, etc, they had the games to be more competitive with Graf, Seles, Navratilova, but they took the court with such an air of deverance to the top players, they were defeated before they hit a ball. Hingis & the Williams had killer instincts never before scene in the women's game.
@DunklenHerzen Personally, I tend to the of Davenport as being part of the 2nd wave of 1990s big baseliners. Seles, Capriati, Huber & Pierce being from the first (1989-91). Davenport played her first US Open in '91 or '92 as did Chanda Rubin and Iva Majoli who made bigger breakthroughs in the mid-90s. Venus, Serena, Hingis, Kournikova and Lucic followed big in '96-98 era. How I see it anyway.
I see. Yea, that would make sense. Do you know if Serena has played Sanchez-Vicario before SV's retirement? Would love to see a video of that.
Also, I wonder how Capriati would have done going into the second wave of big hitters if she would have kept clean etc.
Just watching here, one could tell the inexperience of the new up-and-comer Venus. She kept hitting straight back at her opponents while in 2000, she definitely stepped up and controlled points easier.
@DunklenHerzen '98 Sydney International, 1st time Venus beat Hingis. She & Serena both made semis. Serena rallied from 6-1, 5-1 down to beat Davenport in the Qtrs, 7-5 in the 3rd. Tired, she lost to ASV 6-2, 6-1. '98 French, epic 4th Rd, Serena led ASV 6-4, 5-2 on clay. Had a point where she hit a ball right @ ASV's face in 2nd set. ASV got mad, rallied to win 6-3 in 3rd ... and of course went onto win that GS. Played again on grass at Wimby tuneup with ASV winning 6-4 in 3rd. Last i recall
@DunklenHerzen Vicaro beat Serena in head to head matchups 4 matches to 3, however Venus beat Vicaro in head to head matchups 6 matches to 3. Hingis beat Venus in head to head matches 11-10, and Serena beat Hingis 7-6 in head to head matchups according to what I read on wikipedia.
@JordanjamesX So where is all this antimosity between them I don't see it? Arantxa won her first grand slam at 17 just like Serena did so what the big deal about that? Arantxa also had a champion mentally she made number one in single and also made number one in doubles.
@VsAStarr Well to me that moment at 1:34 was a bit over the top to me. I mean that's just how I see it. Thanks for putting up all these wonderful matches. I appreciate your efforts.
@uninvited1 Hey I am not defensive at all. I agree with what you said. Its only that you started your sentence with "how do you figure?" This is an argumentative stance in a negative way. By asking a question like that, especially since I don't know you, it seems as if you were trying to make light of my opinions. I can see you know what you are talking about, so I respect your opinions (which I agree with by the way).
@eezenwa They are Europeans speaking italian, etc. you don't even know what they are saying so why would you say it sounds racist? Based on what? I missed it.
@hydrolito i hate to repeat this again, but its my opinion. I know what I said and I firmly stand behind it. You can see this clip how you want to, its a free country, and its your opinion. I have played and watched tennis for over 14 years so i know what I am talking about.
LOL at the physio back in the day, some raggady old bandage from the pharmacy lol. 10:51

In 1998 Arantxa was much better than sisters. But in this match it it is unusual for itself was mistaken much.
Vinus couldn't do winners against Arantxa yet

LOL, Arantxa couldn't stand the Sisters!
htownhomie06 6 months ago
@htownhomie06 Arantxa had a losing record against Venus because Venus lead their series 6-3. Venus was able to overpower Arantxa in her career.

Was Davenport part of that generation? Or was she more of Capriati's? Or in-between, idk.

everyone there looks and sounds so racist. I am in shock as to how Venus was able to maintain her composure in that sort of atmosphere.

@eezenwa They're whistling at Arantxa for not getting on with the match, surely. This happens in every tournament.

i dont think race has much to do with it. venus was a newcomer and sanchez vicario was a clay court queen.

Seems like Venus used to use a fully western grip on her forehand back then... it's absolutely useless.
