This is very bad. Oil does not come from dead dinosaurs as they lied to you in school. It is made with salt dead algae and extreme heat under presure. This means that there is probably Volcanic action occurring in the gulf and oil is spewing from all the cracks that have been made down there. This is uncontrolable and will turn the gulf into a fireball eventually.

It is likely a badly fracture formation that cant be cased or plugged. If they began to produce it, then it might depressurize The circumstances are likely known but go unshared with whoever they don't have to share with. It's a kind of top dog control thing. i'd hate to be the guy who tries to tell BP what to do or not do. Probably it's a rare well that cannot be controlled for some reason of underground formation.
