One of the iMacs at work just started doing this. Initially IT thought it was a driver issue. They brought it back and after about one week it started doing it again. Also, the left half of the screen went darker than the right half for weeks leading up to the display just going black. This time IT thinks it might be something requiring a complete replacement. I told the IT guy to run it down to the local Apple store and I'm sure they'd handle it. He seemed to agree.
My old mac had the same problem. Had Apple look at it and they diagnosed an inverter problem and changed it. The inverter powers the screen and if it is faulty then this black screen of death happens!
Mine does the same thing. I have only 1 month left on the warranty. It started doing it last week. I reset the SMC and PRAM but it still does it. It just happens randomly. The computer is still running when it happens. The sound still plays. There is no software crash or anything like that. The screen just turns black and stays that way no matter what I do. I don't know what you did to get your screen to wake up in the video. I guess I have to take it back in before the warranty expires.
mines been doing this 6 months... apple tested it found nothing. could not get it to do what I said it did. my locks up totally... have to hold power button to get it to shut off so I can restart it. My power stays on when it goes to black.
video card issue? sleep issue? hard drive? power supply? beats me.
i have the same problem n it gets me mad coz mah mom just bought it like 2 weeks ago....n when the black screen goes on, the keyboard stops workin....grr
I have this exact same problem with an earlier gen (white) model. What key combination do you hit to 'wake' it up again in the vid above? I normally hit the power button once to make it sleep then hit a key to wake it up and the screen gets restored.
Yes you probably will have to take it to their store.
Apple support helped me as much as possible over the phone (resetting hardware etc.) but this wasn't the problem.
Having collected video evidence, Apple had no choice but to agree that something was broken (even if only for 90% of the time). They gave my iMac a new LCD screen and all is now well.
I've been having the same issue for months. Apple phone support is useless, and claims no one has been having this issue; recommends I take it to an Apple store (55 minutes away).
I guess I'm stuck footing the gas bill to fix their mistakes, with no guarantee that it will work after driving around for two hours wasting my time and gas. :(
Take it in to apple, or call them Mabye som bad connections in there, that dint like heat. Believe you me, ive had similair problems too.. Anyways, just get apple to take a look at it..
Energy saver, screen saver etc. are set to over 1 hour.
Screen goes blank at random intervals and stays black for a random amount for time. Almost always happens within first 10minutes of using it whilst Im browsing, typing, clicking etc.
In System Preferences, Energy Saver, what is it set at under "Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for:"? Could it be 3 minutes and 9 seconds?
