  • The location filming on Oahu is outstanding.

When Shelah is filming her scene on the beach at Kailua at the start, the guy who speaks to her in Hawaiian is asking if she wants to go surfing.

Error: When Charlie Chan and Tarneverro (Bela Lugosi) are in the "pavilion" where Shelah's been killed, they clearly leave both their hats on a table. Later, in the house, the butler (Dwight Frye) very pointedly takes both of their hats from their hands.

  • I have to agree with all of the positive comments about this film. It is very well done for such an early Talkie film. The location shots help a lot, as you know you are really in Hawaii. As a frequent visitor there, I have to say I love the 1931 shots of Waikiki and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The hotel lobby looks just about the same now as when Oland and Lugosi were talking there. It's great seeing two such great stars playing together. Robert Young is pretty good, in maybe his first film?

  • Quite so... pardon. Humble self so sorry for mistake. ;)

(Its great fun to see Oland and Lugosi together in this movie. Thanks so much for posting it!!!)

  • @copperbeechs Not only do you have Lugosi in this film, you also have DWIGHT FRYE! These two had recently made "Dracula". Wow, to get this duo together again!!!! Thank you!! Dwight appears at 16:15 as the butler.

  • @lilypondlane TRUE! I didn't miss Dwight Frye... he's a rather unforgettable actor! I liked Frye's role in "Fast Company" I would have liked to see Lugosi and Frye in more Chan movies.

  • YAAAAA. Been looking for this one!

  • Also Plot line very much like Charlie Chan in Rio

  • @copperbeechs excuse please?...rather plot line of Charlie Chan in Rio ....very much The Black Camel, this s the earliest Chan film that still survives to this day most honourable commentary person...copperbeaches, you present very good point!. :)

  • LIKE? LOVE! Both Lugosi and Oland? Wow!

  • the more I see of Oland the more impressed I am His chan had not an ounce of silliness about him, no overacting, nor under. Betcha Biggers said he was very satisfied with the choice, maybe even outdoing the creators conception be interesting what Biggers thought of the job of Oland

  • I strongly suspect when you watched film in the theaters in the early thirties, it all being so new they had a much greater reality than stuff does now something has been lost that will never return, never, ever with that kind of innocence, and its our loss

  • How wonderful to find this! I didn't even know of its existence. I'm glad he and the road have learned to turn corners together!

  • Thank you so much for the great movie. Thumbs up.

  • This is a public domain film and is free of known copyright restrictions.

  • @cathytreks Bring sick I watched this film it was a good early sound picture , nice real location shots too very good and a fave and thumbs up!

    Sophia :)
