Holly crap you guys did *everything* wrong. You forgot to put in the tappets, you raped those cylinders with that stone, and put the valve springs in upside down (the tight wound coils go abainst the block, not the tappets) and didn't rotate the valve 45-90deg while lapping them.
Pal 10/10 for trying but seriously, bore honing should be done at 1/4 the speed you did it and achieve a crosshatch effective to the expected rpm range. Also I see you left the top ring grove in the bore, if you fit new rings you're going to wear out the new rings on that grove in no time or smash them. Then the valves look new and you're grinding them into those seats hard, normally it's called lapping eg like a cat drinking milk. Lapping is ment to only be a slight and mild process.
nice vid, just doing my MGB engine ... honed today to get rid of the stupid ridge I had resulting in snapped top compression rings and smoshed ring lands (on piston)..
I did not use lubricant, I think that lead to the overheating and cracking of the stones (on stone holder). Buy another tomorrow ($30), and use cooling lubricant. Cylinder walls look great and smooth and even now.
The simple fact that I came here for some info on valve lapping and was treated to some Bloodhound Gang makes me want to buy you a beer. Keep up the good work man.
yeah, not really meant as a tutorial or anything for that matter. just the easiest way to communicate with our pals across the states wtf we're doing (right or wrong)
Great tutorial, seeing it done is so much better than reading how it's done. The music is distracting though, that's just my opinion. Thanks for posting.
Sorry @leuman2, you're right... I'am a fucktard!!! I didn't know anything about that band and thought you was kidding in this mechanik forum. By the way, it's a great song. I'll try to get this band. See you pal...
You have NO IDEA how that spring compressor works either. hahahahahaha
Then you said 'Perfect' at the end... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

could you explain exactly what valve lapping compound does to the the head?
AjakeC1 1 year ago
@AjakeC1 promotes a better seal than a valve job alone. The abrasives grind down any mismatch for a complete seal.

honing or boring with a hone??? who knows you can only gues. yeah agree on the cross hatch comment too un-uniform
rbgelint 3 years ago
well you got the valves thing right but the honing was WAY to fast and not uniform.
VintageClassic1 3 years ago
ah no its not you need to keep a steady up and down motion unlike the start (in one position going flat out
vhcommy 3 years ago
you want a 30 to 45 degree hone cross hatch.
hangurself 3 years ago
not necessarily, depends on the manufacturer. 30-45 is the general cross hatch if not otherwise stated.
