The Navy I remember as a new seaman. The Music added so much. I'm retired now, after 30 years service... just not the same. Sailors really looked after another then.
One of Nicholson's best movies & sadly not that well known ( over here! ). What the fuck happened great American movies? The last 10/20 years has seen a really bad decline in standard to the gutter level we're at now. Witless, boring 'OMG' trash for the slut generation is now considered 'Art'. Men acting like fags & women acting like complete whores is all you see in movies now. No real stories or escapism. Silly 3D Cgi SHIT. Movies are DEAD!
My dad was the bartender in the scene were he says "I AM THE FUCKING SHORE PATROL MOTHER FUCKER!!!!" He's also the bartender in Jack's Movie, "Going South". They were friends. Crazy fuckers.
When people list their favourite Nicolson films The Last detail is very rarely on the list. Its hardly mentioned in the same breath as Easy Rider, The Shining, Chinatown, Cuckoos Nest, Terms of Endearment, Batman, As good as it gets etc, Even with an oscar nomination how many more people were aware of the performance that was included with and some might say overshadowded by Lemmon, Pacino, Redford and Brando. Besides the fact he didnt win.
I just saw this on TCM last night. Great movie. Is the CO at the beginning the same guy who plays the "Southern" Sheriff in LIve and Let Die and The Man With the Golden Gun?
CO? You mean the Master at Ams? They never showed the C.O., they just mentioned his wife's dedication to the Polio Box. THe MAA on this was a Senior Chief (and enlisted man).
Nicolson is brilliant in this role that should have gained more attention than it did. Great support from Otis Young as the fellow lifer and a youthful Randy Quaid as the unfortunate Lawrence.
He was up for an Oscar! What more attention do you need! Save the Tiger: Jack Lemmon Serpico: Al Pacino The Last Detail: Jack Nicholson The Sting: Robert Redford Ultimo tango a Parigi: Marlon Brando
the best Jack N. movie! His character is every Navy guy I've met in county jail, rehab and shitty temp jobs...excellent portrayal of an alkie on the downslide.
@DeeDonner Jack played this role so well, you just knew that he was in the real Navy and not acting. I should know I was a member. The only reason Jack didn't win the Oscar that year, the academe doesn't know a damn thing about the United States Navy or the whole armed forces for that matter!
I love this movie. I love Jack Nicholson.

This is a great American movie from the 70's. Nicholson and his supporting actor, Randy Quaid, should have won Oscars,.
