@420420babe , If you haven't already done so, you can get them from my channel or Chissykim. She has the complete first two albums, as well as "Hatrick", and they're the studio recording quality. I also have several of their live studio sets which are also very good.
Such special sounding music. Takes me back to the times and places when It first came out. We sure could use another album like this one right now. Should be made before the "album concept" is gone forever. An album to a musician is like what a book is for an author. It is a "musician's book".
being 13 and listening to steely dan, the doors,, america, etc. is great because old and young both know that this music is very good, and good music will always have a place in the hearts of those who listen and experience it. Music is in the ear of the listener, after all. People who don't like this music should keep listening. You might grow to like it. If that is too painful, move on; don't hurt yourself. hahaha
What's amazing is this song barreled its way through hits vying for airtime on FM radio by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Procol Harum, Jethro Tull, John Lennon, Deep Purple, Roberta Flack and IT made it. This is one of the best songs from the early 70's. It doesn't even sound dated today. America was and is a great band.
The main point is: take that time in your life to share that beer, even if it's just with yourself; smell the hops. And make sure that you drink the beer you really like. Life's too precious to waste pretending you're somebody else.
good to hear that teens and preteens appreciate real music these days.America sure brings alot of great memories from my youth why can't music be like this again it makes me sad and angry at the same time :-(
@peterrchristiansen I LOVE this! I'm only 5 months old and all the babies listen to crap like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", but I listen to real music.
@peterrchristiansen Wow, someone is just to uptight about time. To 13 year old music from "our day" would be considered old just as music from our parents teen years such as the 40's and 50's is also considered old.
@aylissapina nice and cool that you like these bands..now try checking out bands like the siousixe and the Banshees, the cure and the sex pistols hehe :)
"The job of public school systems is" to convince you that society is beyond repair, so don't bother trying; just live to work, work to buy (paying taxes only buys protection from another taxman; AKA mafia extortion), and keep the cycle of ignorance-greed-fear going no matter what the cost!
"Civilization" is barely 6,000-years-old, while the tribal way of life evolved over millions of years. "Primitives" are happier, healthier, and have MORE free time.
Wow! I could have written what you just did myself! But let's add "higher education" into the mix, too. Colleges anymore just teaches how to work the system without teaching people of any real thinking skills, rendering higher learning, null and void, or at the very least, a Bull Crap proposition.......
this band had it togethor and it shows. their music is so coordinated to make such beautiful sounds. wonderful how music can bring people together without words.
This was one of America's best songs, but it got very little radio airplay back in the day. Thank God for you and Youtube otherwise songs like this would have been lost forever. Thanks for sharing. Peace.
whenever i am at the dentist i always play america when i am under nitrus, boy do they sound great, listen to the words to this its almost a sign of the times now, the worst was last month , i finally named that horse with no name, its wildfire, think when i go back i just listen to linkin park thats good to have fight pain with
Dear Dan,I E mailed you a while ago about you and the bands collaboration with John Martin. You found the time to reply in wonderful way! I was humbled by your lack of ego.Horse With No Name, changed my life. For Family and Friends, please accept my deepest commiserations. There is a great void in my life now.But I have your wonderful music to soothe my soul.Thank you for everything.
With Dan's passing, I'm sadly reminded of an old bandmate that took his life 8 yrs ago. After my army army stint, we put the band back together. Only nothing had changed. Here we were in our 30's still smokin' and partying. It had to end. We played a lot of Americas' stuff and those are my fondest memories. I hurt you and the guys badly when I left but I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm so sorry we never reconected before you ended it. Maybe it would have helped, maybe not. Miss you Alan.
@YogahofYag Yes, it should have made a great titletrack to Logun's Run! When I think of Logan's Run, I think of Jessica (Jenny Agutter), And when I think of Jenny Agutter, I think of Equus. And when I think of Equus, I know we were lucky to have seen Jenny Agutter nude. Also, who could forget Holly (Farrah Fawcett)? Having talked Logan, (Michael York), into getting dark hair when he was about to alter his appearance, alas, laser's cut Farrah's part short. Both Jenny and Farrah had great nipples!
Man, that sucks, its true, the great ones are being taken away, maybe for a good reason. God takes the good stuff. Amy Whinehouse is the exception to this rule
If you watch all the live videos here on youtube, you'll see that all three of the core members sang on their different hits. Maybe Dan sang more of the hits, but all three of them did lead vocals.
What can you say? 'Cause I understand you've been running from the man that goes by the name of the sandman, He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye of a hurricane that's abandoned. We feel the ghosts of men aloft in our atmosphere, unwilling to give up a purpose that may no longer matter, caught in an eternal vortex at the peak of their reckoning, simultaneously finding and losing themselves as poltergeists reminding us of service to America, wondering what we meant by living all those years.
Are they referring to Spiderman's villain? nah dont think so... they also have another MARVEL comic book namecalling with the Tin Man ( of The Liberty Legion)
I'm known as Sandman at my school. This past year, I happened to go all out ona' trip one school night. I woke up 1 in the morning in a sandbox with a cop shining a flashlight in my face, giving me shit.
Sandman puts sand in your eyes after being awake for hours flying a US jet. Members of America met in the UK whilst their fathers were serving at US bases in the early 70's
these guys were NOT in the military, their parents were..........in britain NOT germany! &their first album was recorded in britain & they went to high school in britain.......
My dad said the sandman was the fictional guy who went after draft dodgers... I believe this was near the end of the Vietnam war, but I could be wrong.
RECUERDO QUE CON ESTE DISCO SE DIERON A CONOCER EL GRUPO AMERICA Y QUE BIEN LO HICIERON NO LO CREN AMIGOS FUE EN 1971 BUENOS COROS BUENA MUSICA LASTIMA QUE NADA ES PARASIEMPRE
Its about growing up man. When you are a kid you fear the sandman. The lyrics is about 2 people. One grew up or was forced to grow up by joining the air force (planes/enlistment) while the other remains at home (I;ve been there, You;ve been here) and still have not faced his fear or something fearful or is protected (Chorus). Or alternatively its about 2 people - One being enlisted and the other draft dodgers avoiding the government (the man). What do you think?
Favorite part: "I understand you've been runnin' from a man that goes by the name of the 'Sandman'. He flys the sky like an eagle in the eye of a hurricane that's abandoned."
@WellhungHungryboyfromhungary Like all great works, it starts as a seed (and thanks for that rooted background!) and becomes a tree with many legitimate branches of thought that keep it a growing, living, vital entity. There is no end to the inspiration such a great work creates in the open minds of an attentive audience; that finds all sorts of treasures, not even yet dreamed of by these gifted lads, that goes way beyond the beginnings of Army brats (yet never leaves that trunk entirely). Cool.

@Hungryboyfromhungary The fictional sandman that makes you fall asleep. The boys in America met as US Airforce Security, and falling asleep in that position gets you in a heap of trouble which fits the songs lyrics. Then again, some other people have chosen to relate it to other things to describe its meaning. I find that to be a personal preference, you believe what you want.
When I was 12 my mum and dad always listened to AMERICA and I loved and still do.

I feel it has something to do with going to vietnam, but as someone else said music is wonderful in the fact that you can take from it what you want.

Cool.

Every time I hear a song by America it takes me back to when I was in high school. They were the best group of that generation.

who is the sandman?
Hungryboyfromhungary 11 months ago 4
@Hungryboyfromhungary The fictional sandman that makes you fall asleep. The boys in America met as US Airforce Security, and falling asleep in that position gets you in a heap of trouble which fits the songs lyrics. Then again, some other people have chosen to relate it to other things to describe its meaning. I find that to be a personal preference, you believe what you want.
