Actually, I rather like this exchange. It's pretty clear that, when pressured, Geithner fundamentally agrees with Grayson's implications: banks secured by the taxpayer (pretty much all of them) have to be brought under a regulatory regime that puts clear limits on their ability to expose themselves to debt based on their capital. The problem with the prior system was, to put it VERY clearly, de-regulation of the financial system. Period.
barney frank was one of the main players that was in favor of fannie and freddie taking on high risk debt. They are the ones who incentiveized and forced heavy regulations on lending institutions to take high risk loans. Then they sold them off to fannie and freddie, and poof, you the taxpayer are on the hook.

Actually, I rather like this exchange. It's pretty clear that, when pressured, Geithner fundamentally agrees with Grayson's implications: banks secured by the taxpayer (pretty much all of them) have to be brought under a regulatory regime that puts clear limits on their ability to expose themselves to debt based on their capital. The problem with the prior system was, to put it VERY clearly, de-regulation of the financial system. Period.

barney frank was one of the main players that was in favor of fannie and freddie taking on high risk debt. They are the ones who incentiveized and forced heavy regulations on lending institutions to take high risk loans. Then they sold them off to fannie and freddie, and poof, you the taxpayer are on the hook.

'If an entity that wasn't a bank became a systemic risk due to size, we would impose regulations on it similar to ones we are GOING to impose on large, complex financial institutions'.

Geithner does nothing but question dodging. He never answers anything directly. He's extremely vague because he knows what needs to be done, but he doesn't have the authority to do them. Big banking is going to come down swiftly and harshly on anyone who says "enough is enough" and sets some damn rules on these crooks.
