This is why you should defragment often. It lowers hard-drive wear (damage) and increases read speed, by placing files in continuous tracks, so that it doesn't have to do the crazy seeking you see at the end of this video.
Hello there! Last week my samsung 500Gb made this very loud screeching sound, a few seconds after after it spun up. It alwas has been sitting in this external casing and never been transported or kicked or misused (i take care of my harddrives) but then it makes this sound and I dont know what to think of it.
I managed to copy 400Gb off of it after i moved it inro my pc and the drive still works fine. But my Q is, what the hell happened, anyone know?
Used up too much mem in one block (part of track), probably. It couldn't add any more in that block so the magnets stuck together tight and written loads of random files.
LMAO @ "Transcribe Audio Beta" feature. They got a long way to go.

@numbah09 linux uses a different type of method to store on hard drives that makes them so they don't need to defragment. go search 'how ext4 works'

did you know that hard drives has 2 very powerful magnets? if you touch them it's very hard to separate them.

probbably overload or power failure or other weird electrick stuff
