Anyone else find it odd that she goes on and on about how humans weren't meant to tolerate this cold and how every square inch of the face must be covered or else it will literally freeze... while her guide goes bare-faced in just a stocking cap for six solid hours at -40... and breaks all the wind for her... and seems totally fine?
Yes very interesting lifestyle. But I think we should inform the Evenki people about the importance of Feminism, Multiculturism and Anti-Fascism. I think that's very important.
@FreeTibetChinaOUT The Y chromosome is hereditary in the male line and the other in the female line. So, if I mistake, in ancient societies women often leave the original village when they married. But the man would continue in the same town, keeping the same Y chromosome all of his descendants, in the same tribe over generations.
That Chinese genetic scientist was such an amazing person for putting aside the pride (and sometimes arrogance) that exists in his culture. He is a real scientist because he can, as Carl Sagan once put it, "follow the truth, no matter how unsettling it may seem"
Dr Alice robert she deserve to be given award and is crew men i watch this programms for hours but in another world i took it upon myself has if it were the begining of ealy human migration out from Africa thousands of years ago
Nationalism pulls the wool over ones eyes, making people believe that they, as a group, are somehow fundamentally different. This was the case with the romanticization of the "nordic race" during WW2 and now we can see with the Chinese. They are too proud to acknowledge that they are exactly the same as the rest of us. It's a shame really,
Does anyone know the difference between the genetic process of using the male Y chromosome as the marker point or the female X chromosome marker? I kind of found it interesting that another human evolution show, very good too, made it seem like the X is not that reliable as it meshes with the other Xs and becomes indistinguishable. I ain't no scientist but somebody who love and enjoy such researches.
Alice, why did you not simply ask the Chinese professor about his view on the genetic evidence that makes it clear the current human species has one common ancestor and not multiple, therefore ruling out any specific human population having a different origin than the rest? I think we need to bury the myths and hearsay when we get the opportunity rather than keeping them going for sensationilsm and selling books, movies, etc.
great series. this is what we need. sadly most folks are more interested in idol, fear factor, joe millionaire, mob wives etc etc. keep up the good work
@AscendingParadigmI would guess that during the events of survival, more concentration was on that, than to make some kind of written record as to where their journey began. And as with verbal records they usually turn into the makings of folkore- Possibly related to like when you give somebody a account of something, then it passes on to 10 people...The 10th person's account is REAL convoluted due to the interpretations of others. It basically becomes bullshit.
I work in a giant freezer that is -26 celcius. I couldn't imagine -40. -26 isn't so bad, as long as you are moving around. You stand around too long you get pretty cold. And if you are driving through doing small jobs, the wind in your face burns like crazy. Your cheeks go numb.
Or identical environmental conditions selected in both Erectus and sapiens the same flat face, small nose. Only the DNA can tell us the truth. (@39:25)
@mikieginokc1 Even without the DNA verdict, I would think that logic would rule against two Homo species evolving separately from Homo Erectus, and being able to interbreed with the high degree of success evident between Asians and others.
if it was -26 C why can't you see her breath? In episode 1 she says how could we have crossed the desert only towards the end does she mention that the climate terrain was diffrent. To much is contribed, not the sience but her journey.
I don't know about the Evenki, but it seems almost like the commercialized portrayal that the indigenous people of the Americas have had to endure. "Sure. This is a sculpture of our God. Only $9.95" Etc. Perhaps I'm too cynical. . .
I'm bothered by how much modern technology these "primitive" peoples were using. At 11:36 you clearly see a modern watch and throughout you can see "modern" technologies like coats, thimbles and metal needles. While I don't doubt that many of these techniques were used when we were bumbling about the Asian continent, it irritates me that the impression is given that the people she's interviewing are primitive.
@madprocess The whole point of this was to prove how people tough it out even in the worst of conditions, trying to portray the image of ancient human ancestors braving cold and wind to get the food, fur, and shelter they needed. Just because these people have realized they live in the modern world, and bought watches, is no reason to knock the woman or the doccy series. I don't think she meant to show them as primitive at all, in fact I think she was trying to prove the opposite.
why do historians void the real facts of alien interventions as written in every part of the world ? its in stone and statues and all around the world the same story but then again the masses believe in the fantasies of bullshit religions ! and why ?
the asians have their history saying they came were created from the snake sky god , the american indians same story of the snake gods and every damn race here on earth same type of alien interventions ! research it !
@carterCMG I just bought this video, as a gift to my granddaughters. They are both intelligent, attractive and tough, and I want them to have a superb role model.
I stopped watching this part way into her opening sequence. She seemed too far indulged in feelings rather than science. Prancing around and pretending to be one with the native peoples. Not viewed and disliked.
@juggaloryan3 You're entitled to your opinion, but you're in a tiny minority. This is BBC natural history at its best, enjoyed and appreciated by millions. Did you watch part 1? Perhaps that would have helped accustom you to the production style.
@juggaloryan3 "She seemed too far indulged in feelings rather than science." Seemed? Stick with it. She knows her stuff in paleo-archaological and anatomy etc. How else would you want it presented? Her with a scoul in a boiler suit? Would you have preferred Sir David?
@juggaloryan3 You judged the program based on the opening? You're truly missing out. It's a wonderful series, and I think you've been far too judgmental. Give it a shot. :)
@juggaloryan3 Science, particularly in the field, can be and is quite fun! Why be such an arrogant stuffed shirt? David Attenbrough has fun with his science programs too, not to mention Brian Cox and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Get over yourself. She did a great job getting the viewer to feel part of the scene. It was excellent.
