One first notices that it's a wether, not a ewe, being sheared. I'll bet they didn't want to risk good breeding stock. One next notices that the machine, regardless of its ugliness, did not injure the sheep, and didn't cut his dick like it could have. I always worry about that when I'm shearing my ram. That, and the immense possibility of getting seriously hurt.
Shearing, though, is an art form. Even though I really, really like machinery, I fail to see any art in this machine's work.

@XephiRus : The fact that the device seems cruel and it's slow speed are evident. However, remember that Rome wasn't built in one day, and no inventions work right away and probably a lot fail. It is trial and error process.
What so seems to easy for human to do in fact was probably a feat to achieve using a machine. And this is a great progress for robotics.
Next time they will take the good ideas out of this contraption and throw out what didn't work.
ive been raised up on a farm and have never ever come across anything like this....to be honest this is disturbing!!!!! leave it to the shearers who can do a hell of a better job and whole lot more in 5minutes. no wonder the world has VEGETARIANS.....
I thought PLEASE tell me this is a dead sheep. Nope. Too bad for the sheep. They should make the inventor get a circumcision this way. Shouldn't take more than week, bro. God forbid these people ever automate the slaughter ing process. I have never done anything with a sheep but look at them and I could shear one faster than this.
anyone else think this is fucked up. poor sheep. big part of me wants to fight to make the world a better place, but all these horrible you tube videos just make me kinda hope the end of humanity is soon. how about I stretch you in some machine and shave you. If this doesnt break your heart you are straight up a fucked up person who desearves to go to hell. Fuck man, what kinda of place do we live in.
It is easy to think that the sheep is scared and doesn't like this. The most reliable test is to see whether sheep are prepared to be shorn more than once. Sheep, like humans, can remember unpleasant experiences clearly and will visibly and actively resist being subjected to a similar experience again. We never had this problem in our tests and trials. The sheep's eyes are completely covered by the special head restraint. This makes the sheep fall asleep, especially as it is upside down.
lol thats funny who was the genius who came up with that 1???? probly sum tight farmers not wonting 2 pay the shearers to do a proper job hahaha look how ruff it was iv never seen it snow like that in the summer b4 ha ha haaar y those ridges left on it i think even sir ed would struggle 2 climb lol lol lol!!!!
Ridiculously slow! Maybe the restraints would help a human shearer, who is several times faster even when he takes extra care not to nick the skin, and no doubt less noisy.

Don't feel sorry for it. Sheep hate getting sheared by humans too (and also requires them being restrained), so having a robot doing it instead doesn't add much more to the experience. True, we make money off it, but if they don't get sheared sheep can get heat stroke and die. Even sheep raised for meat have to get sheared for their health, and in those breeds the wool is useless.

Sheep shorn by people will always be more efficient with less stress on the animal. This is real hard to watch. Just can't believe the amount of money wasted on this project to achieve this as the result. Sorry guys.
Shearing costs less because an alternative has been demonstrated. Shearers have never aggressively increased their rates since the robot was shown in 1990, unlike 1973 and 1987 when rates went up by as much as 50% in one year. The savings resulting from moderation of shearer' claims have been huge compared with the cost of the research. It was good value for money invested.
Whatever and the severe recessions that began in those years had nothing to do with it? Further research led me to believe that everyone but this university found the thing pretty trivial. Industries that can benefit from automation will and yet for this machine it just hasn't happened.
Not good - this is an unatural position for a sheep to be manipulated into. Not good at all. Because the sheep can be stretched into that position does not mean it is beneficial nor pain free for the animal. I am not criticising your video, just the person who invented this method of shearing.
Physiological stress measurements were done with manual shearing. Separation from other sheep is more stressful than shearing. Most stressful thing for sheep is, apparently, copulation, and no one has been able to demonstrate harmful after-effects. (Thanks to Prof. Emeritus. David Lindsay).
In our tests, sheep often fell asleep and showed no signs afterwards of any ill-effects from being constrained.
How lazy and horrible this people get. Why would they use a robot if they know they're shearing a sheep? It's not like they're manufacturing a car aren't they? Cruel bastards!

Well, let's see.
tired: the engine may overheat.
sleep: won't work 24/7 for many reasons.
vacation: yeah, but still won't work by itself, needs a operator.
sick: it may be broken from time to time.
eat: well, energy, oil, parts.
boss/employee issues: you'll have to purshase, fill up contracts, warranty policy, maintenance, operator, people to clean and pick up the 'product'.
Same thing, differently. Better? cheaper? It all depends.

Would be interested in the source of your research. I shear in the US.
