It's a damned shame this man seems to be stuck writing music for American Dad. Someone needs to throw this guy a line and get him a decent Hollywood platform.
I love this track...McNeely could have just filled this theme with iterations of the Imperial March and made it all sinister and looming...but he chose to go with something that both reflects the history of the city as the heart of the Jedi and the Old Republic...and the Empire as it wants itself to be seen, grand and heraldic, redolent with the glory of old Rome. It shows some great thematic imagination.
True, and the old Star Wars score had all kind of set piece musical parts. Like little concert pieces with a great flowing melody. Like the "Asteroid Field" etc. Pieces that you can whistle along with. Great stuff... but now... just technically amazing stuff, but no flowing melody etc. I miss the old skool style. Much better.
One composer that I would like to get any future Star Wars / Star Trek assignment is Frederic Talgorn. That guy is the French John Williams (old skool style) mixed with Horner/Goldsmith and Herrmann. Totally cool.
But no.... dumbasses at the studios go for Zimmer and Zimmer clones to score all kind of interesting action/adventure pics.... can you imagine Talgorn scoring pics like Prince of Persia or something?! (even though those movies are not good, but musical wise, they could be very interesting) That would be fantastic.
Great work, I remember I bought it back in 1995. Still love it, and I daresay that I prefer this work over John Williams efforts for the new SW movies which didn't have that magic spark anymore. (same goes for the new Indiana Jones movie)
This particular track is very good, it remains me of Korngold's brassy parts of the Sea Hawk and the city feel of William's Eartquake.
@Kalecommando - Agreed. I think Williams has gradually lost his subtlety over the years. His music seems to have come to rely less and less on melodies and harmonies, and more in bombastic choral and brass parts that don't really have much of a tune, and on cliché harp glissandi and other tricks like that. It's much less rewarding to listen to, and doesn't stay with you like his older stuff does.
wish they made a film of shadows of the empire
:) long live the N64 and star wars always will be my childhood favourite

If you read the book while listening to the soundtrack it flows perfectly.
