  • Thanks a lot for doing this man, I just did a 'heavy grease' pack on my diff, and this made it stress free and easy.

  • The best tutorial...

  • You can boil the trans case too, it makes the plastic stronger n clean

  • tooth brush and soap and your done wow its not that damn hard.

  • thanks for the info i was able to take my transmission apart and re-grease it...

  • Just wanted to thank you for an excellent tutorial! My seven-year-old son saved for months for a Traxxas Stampede. My husband and I know *nothing* about this stuff, and are fast becoming less ignorant so that we can keep the boy motoring ;-) Had to take the transmission apart as it was making a heck of a racket and now know what to do to clean and put it back. Thanks VERY much!!!

  • Just finished putting mine back together! Thanks so much for putting this together! I'll be at my local track soon to see how she runs! Thanks, again!

  • solvents are fine for the plastic just dont use them if you dont know what solvent will not melt the plastic denature alcohol is generally the safest... lint is fine for the transmission it wont hurt anything

  • how often you clean your transmission?

  • Thanks alot for the tutorial, i needed to take my transmission apart beacuase it sounded odd and refused to accelerate :C. And how can i get my pinion gear out if the head of the screw is like broken??

    Thanks and plz reply

  • i regreased mine and my gears are plastic because mine is not waterproof

  • what is the part number of the black silicone grease?(tra****)

  • i have to rebuild my transmission but im new so im scare to take it apart

  • @XzreflexX42 It isnt that hard i have been in the hobby for just over a year and did it with no problem.

  • Is there a reason why you dont wash everything in water, and let it dry ?

  • @RMJ1984 If your going to wash anything in water, dry it IMEDIATLEY!

  • i don't have a rc car and i think i won't buy myself one but i watched the whole video well done mate!

  • thank you this was a huge help... very detailed keep it up ill be seeing these in the future...gona go pick up my gas powered truck tomorrow

  • great vid man nice computer work on the vid.helped me with my trans also

  • can i just wash it int the sink instead of the que tips ?

  • How often do you clean your trans out?

  • "insert the rod"

    "slide it down the rod"

"might have a gritty feeling" xD hahahaaha

  • are those stampede tires?

  • What a great video - I like how you fast-forwarded in parts! thanks

  • Thank you for the best video on youtube bud!! Seriously, I've been looking for a video that shows me how to take everything apart down the the diff and this is the ONLY one! Once again thanks, great vid!

  • thx

  • the idler gear changes the direction that the diff spins

  • how do you ge the iderler gear off of the input shaft. my input shaft is bent. please help

  • Awesome thanks for sharing. Needed to know this, got an aluminum gear box coming in the mail

  • I have a rustler vxl and when i accelerate i hear a whining, any reason why that would be. I got it last year and havent really taken everything apart. What would be some causes to why this would be happening? thanks, it also doesnt have any torque, it just whines and doesnt let the wheel burn out

  • @snowboard704 sounds like u shud tighten ur slipper clutch.

  • I have a rustler vxl and when i accelerate i hear a whining, any reason why that would be. I got it last year and havent really taken everything apart. What would be some causes to why this would be happening? thanks

  • almost all of the screws in mine were phillips, almost all these are allen/hex screws. mine is xl5, so i bet i know why...

  • what i dont get is what does the idler gear do?

  • Great video, very informative. I ended up stripping my transmission gears on my stampede by using a 21 tooth pineon gear upgrade. Lesson learned though which is use metal gears if you plan any upgrades either with regards to the motor or the pineon gear.

  • thank you very much for the video

it helps me a lot to open all to check my gears because i had a bad sound in my stampede .

finally it was only something in the motor.

  • Once you take the gears out of the transmission case could you take the empty case and wash it out in soapy water??

  • thanks alot this helped so much

  • Whats the tape do on the bottom?

  • hey that was very helpful;. i have the xl 5 original i will have the vxl soon thank u

  • holy crap! sooo much screws and gears and plastic just to get it almost new again!

  • Holy shit I just watched 18 minutes of bullcrap

  • How good is the stock Rustler??

  • @ScienceyCubes the rustler is the best i just bought one an its really good but it takes 8 hours to charge with stock charger but with custom it taks 35 minutes its a really goo car and tough fast and u can buy different batteries which makes it goo alot faster 70mph+

  • @ScienceyCubes Rustler Vxl Is AMAZING but lately I've heard these noises coming from the transmission so thats why im here to learn how to take it apart properly

  • I hope he put it all together

  • Does the Slash 4x4 have a transmission or just the diffs?? Or are diffs the same as transmission?

  • will litium grease work for the differentail?

  • Hey, looks like these smart guys uses a torsen differential and it's kind of one way diff :-) put on a video how gears works in this? As if it's Torsen diff these guys made really smart moove :-)

  • does the rustler come with steel gears or plastic?

  • What car stand are you using??

  • SPERM ON HIS HAND AT 3:43

  • I broke my transmission case and got a new aluminum one...Now I have to tak everything apart and it looks like a pain in the ass...LOL

    Good tutorial by the way...

  • WHERE DO U LIVE IN CANADA I LIVE IN ONTARIO>

  • were did you get the front and rear bumpers 4 ur rustler?

  • these metal gears alot better than the plastic?

  • @peroxidal Yes, they won't overheat and /or get stripped at high speeds like the plastic ones.

  • @forresttrenaman haha false...they will strip...infact on mine, 3 and a half of the teeth ripped off of my ideler gear

  • @bixelstix96 hey man, and yes same thing happened to my stampede vxl, 2nd day i had it the gears inside the diff stripped, a few teeth were completely snapped off.

  • @forresttrenaman Metal gears increase rotating weight. This takes more motor power.

  • @peroxidal Spur should ALWAYS be plastic. They're a fail-safe if you land with full throttle so you strip the spur and don't grenade the whole transmission.

  • @gyro231995 holy crap it took u 6 months to reply.

  • @peroxidal Yeah I replied and then noticed how old it was. Regardless of time, my comment still stands, though.

  • @gyro231995 lol ok

  • keep up the great work on your videos

  • I am going to the beach next week and I am thinking about taking my Rustler VXL. You think that's a bad idea? I was thinking I could just clean it real good when I get back home. If they are ok to drive on sand, do you know of a good paddle tire and wheel set I could pick up pretty cheap? Thanks and great videos!

  • Ive only cleaned my tranny 2 iin a year and that was to put new bearing in it. so u dont need to clean them every other week. Brushless rules but if u go from stock to brushless i would suggest a full clean of the whole truck so its readdy for the awsome power

  • Hey

I have a 2nd hand traxxas slash and I installed all my elecs/motor but only the pinion and spur turn.. (the wheels don't) Any idea on what the problem would be and how I'd go about fixing it? I've also tightened the slipper clutch all the way.. still no drive..

    Please Help.

    Appreciate it, Thanks

  • @TheUHUstick

your idle gear is messed up does it make a grinding noise when you give it some throttle

  • @gluka47

    Thanks for the reply,

No, there's no grinding sound when I gas it. Any idea on what else it could be? I had tightened the CVD yokes and it worked for a few minutes but it stopped turning again and this time the CVD;s aren;t the problem..

    Lmk

    Thanks

  • where did you buy the grease and wrenchs

  • where did you by the grease and wrenchs

  • Nice video man. Very useful!

  • Is the Rustler a good RC or should I buy the VXL version?

  • how do i know if i have my spur and pinion gear meshed properly. the info in the book is shit. i did what it says, but still have an unusual noise coming from them. thanks

  • THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL..

  • where did u get that turn table thing that ur car is on

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for this!!!!

  • Hey, I get the same car. I stripped a gear fully. What is the best new transmission to buy? thanks!

  • i cannot put out the pinion gear, my tools are to small or to big.

  • how do u remove a stripped allen bolt head the allen key just turns does not do anything any tips

  • @mathew6593 hammer

  • A very valuable presentation and nicely done. I have saved it for reference when I rebuild my Traxxas Bandit this week. Thank you!

  • yeahhhhhh, i think I'll just not clean my transmission

  • if you cover a q tip with the coffee filter . why not just cover a screwdriver or somethign ? just saying. but other than that . this was a great video. i learned a lot.

  • Great Job Mate Nice!!

  • THANKS MAN I DID NOT NOW HOW TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER

  • great video man now i can put my traxxas back together

  • great vid man thanx im getting a rustler vxl in a few weeks and am just gunna take the gears out and grease them with smoother grease

  • Nice video mate, sure it has helped a few people out. Well done!!

  • what that clear stuff on your hands

  • my rustlers moter got fried and idk were to get a new 1 can u plz help (its compleatly stock and i sun it on the road and it flips over then over heats)

  • @glichkingv2000 You should find a local hobby shop. Just look in the phone book or google "hobby shop near (your city)".

Also, DO NOT buy another titan motor. They are crappy. A good upgrade motor that is faster and more durable is the trinity speedgems 16 turn. You will have to gear down several teeth so the motor does not overheat. Also, pick up a duratrax temp gun so you can know how hot your motor is. It should not be over 160. If it does, it will probably fry or lose performance.

  • @glichkingv2000 Also, check out monster (dot) traxxas (dot) com/ forumdisplay (dot) php?f=40

I am a member there and I can tell you that just about any question you have about your rustler, we can help you with. My username there is vinny_sabatini, if you want to contact me directly.

  • Great video and easy to fallow. You should make a video on how to clean the Velineon motor.

  • @SDfella86 For the most part, it doesn't need to be cleaned. Oiling the bearings once in a while would be good, but it doesn't require taking anything apart.

  • where did you get your trucks?

  • Thankyou very much for this good tutorial!

I will use ut someday ;).

  • hello, i'm looking to get a good beginner-intermediate truck or buggy as my first r/c car for around 100-200 bucks. i was looking at the traxxas rustler standard version(or what ever the non-brushless version is) or the volcano epx. if someone could tell me what they think or suggest something better in the same price range that would be great. thanks.

  • @RVMDairsoft The rustler is a great and durable beginners car. Don't expect to take it to a track and do to well, but it is great to learn on. As for the volcano, I can't tell you much, but my cousin bought one and didn't like it a whole lot.

  • Thanks for the video! It was really helpful

  • electric motor cleaner would be great for cleaning out, its my favorite thing in my toolbox, and i think when i do this next march ill clean my bearings out of the grease and put bearing oil in them, then the transmission will be super uber smooth, and i could possibly get a new tranny case because some of the screw holes are stripped, but im not sure, im favoriting this video because how great it is 5* if we still had the system so ill give the video a thumbs up :)

  • idk whts tha matter wit it

  • if you dont have enough lithium grease on the main gears will it be loud? because i took my gears apart to experiment but most of the grease was on my fingers, so i just put it back together and i ran it and it was loud. could that be the problem why it was louder than usuall?

  • 9:17 lol

  • any 1 wanna buy my rustler vxl its mest up the little blue box is apart i need help message me forrstrenam or any 1

  • @MrTdalton123 I was gonna say I wanted to buy it until you said it was messed.

  • are these the tires from the stampede?

  • do those twist cause i have twisted mine?

  • i got 10.17, i got to lower my spur gear cause i have 23 pinion, and 86 spur

  • holy waste of time...throw all that stuff in a large bowl of Dawn dish washing liquid and use a tooth brush to clean all those gears....good "how to" for beginners otherwise

  • very nice vid

  • I use this stuff called fast dry multi purpose solvent. let me tell you, this stuff works wonders for cleaning gears. its also a good idea to remove the rubber seals on the bearings and blast through them with that cleaner solvent stuff. I am a super rc hobbyist so I have upgraded to stainless steel bearings and running 30,000 weight oil in the diff. grase is to thin and allows the inside tire to unload to easy for good handling.

  • Dude I just got a stampede and everything was fine until it fell of a table. The screws that secure the motor were loose and the motor moved away from the clutch and now, even after I fixed it there's a grinding noise coming from somewhere. I rebuilt the tranny and cleaned everything. No change. What do you think? I've only run two batts thru it.

  • @logitechz3 my rustler wasnt a VXL to begin with, so its transmission is 100 or 90% plastic

  • @cheesedude24 The slipper is the same as the older models, the new models use metal diff, metal top gear and idler gear but slipper clutch is still like the older one

  • Comment removed

  • lol it makes it eayzer for me 2 open it now

  • My pinion screw got striped any ideas on how to get it out.

  • do you think it would be a better idea to take my rustler to a hobby shop to get the differential replaced or is it pretty easy? also , since my rustler was originally a non-VXL, do you recommend getting a metal slipper clutch?

  • @cheesedude24 The slipper clutch what traxxas uses is already a metal one. What do you mean?

  • Why dont you use diff grease instead of silicon grease for you diff?

  • what part# is that gease i can,t find it on the parts list please reply thanks

  • what allen key drivers are those please reply

  • Cool vid man. Helped me out a bunch

  • You have awesome vids man...thanks a million

  • gd video have you tryd like associated diff lube?

  • gd video have you tryd like associated diff lube?

  • lol i couldn't help laughing at you when ever you said "like so" after everything.

But i good job on the vid

  • i don't need to clean my tranny yet but this video was so entertaining i couldn't stop watching it.. lol great video very informative

  • тупое трепло(

  • is it okay to use soap and water because u made it sound like we cant use shit to clean it but coffe filters

  • good video.

  • hello. i to have a rusty

umm all i have is black grease. not sure if its silicone. but would getting the white grease for the housing gears be recommended

(im about to replace my bad gear housing with a aluminum one. old one busted when hit a fence lol.) i swear that fence came from no where

  • I use an old toothbrush to clean out the teeth on the gears. Also for those who like a super clean gear case like me,you can wash the empty case in hot soapy water then use compressed air to dry. Good video though

  • great vid helped me alot thx

  • What backwheels are you using??????????

  • Great informative video! You obviously take care of the trans. How long do your bearings last?

  • thanks

  • When you cleaned the two halves of the transmission they didnt look very clean to me. I just think warm soapy water and a tooth brush is better. Other than that good comprehensive video.

  • my stampede runs and turns very hot and broken two motors! need help please! have a nice day!

  • if you take the motor out of the truck and give the truck a gentle push, dose it glide smoothly and quietly, if that's fine then it might have something to do with your gear mesh or the gear ratio, if you count the teeth on the larger gear (Spur), and divide it by the number of teeth the smaller gear has (pinion), then multiply that number by 2.72, your number should be around 10 to 15, any lower than 10 and you are in trouble.

    (see next comment..........)

  • Other than that I don't know, if you want to you could give me more details such as which tires you are running, and what battery you are using, and do you do a lot of off-roading.

  • @forresttrenaman where did you git those red tools

  • @66CIR clean you tranns and whash it down with water and clean it all of and the see how much pressure is on that motor

  • @66CIR If its the Titan 12T they always blow unfortunately.

  • my stampede run and turn very hot and broken two motors what can do? need help! have a nice day!

  • Where could i get silicon grease easiest? At my LHS (Local HObby Shop) or like a home depot?

  • i got a question... at 05:43... when you removed the tape... does the transmission come stock with the tape over it? thanks :D im just curious lol...

  • yes it comes with tape.

  • @rcanton1l1 sweet! lol thanks for telling me hahaha i opened mine up and-re oiled... man youll be suprised at how much debri gets trapped under the transmission... 0.o

  • nice vid!

  • i baught the pozitrain for my stampede puts full power to the wheels. only about 15 bucks to. It replaces the 5 small gears inside the differential gear for one pice, this allows both wheels to spin at the same time in the same direction. No more opposite directions with no load.

  • how often should you clean the transmission??

  • It depends, I would clean it out every 200hrs or so, but if you bash in wet muddy conditions, then you should clean it out every 100hrs or so.

I bash every other day or so in dry conditions for about an hour and I clean mine out once a year.

  • lol 14:12 it dosent matter which way it goes in oh wait it does lol FAIL

Yeh but thanks for the vid helped me with taking it out!

  • Well done! Thanks for this.

  • Great video! You should do a how-to series of vids on the Rusty. I'm using this video as a reference to upgrade the idler gear on my Rustler.

  • Gut ich weiß zwar wie man das macht aber war trotzdem sehr hilfreich beim Rustler Auseinanderschrauben ^^

  • i shedded 3 of the 4 planetary gears in my rustler vxl on 3s lipo. i was pulling wheelies and hitting a speed bump with just the rear tires...doing a forward flip and landing back on all fours. did it 20 or so times before the diff shredded.

  • how often shud you clean this on a slash

  • Comment removed

  • wat batt can i use for a long runtime on my stampede vxl

  • @101quadrider

a spc 8000 will last for ever

    or a decent 5000+ will last 40+

  • sweet vid, now i know how my tranny looks like when i get my vxl for $70 without motor and radio setup

  • hey in a nother one of yore vidios you said that you where going to upgrade youre brushless system woulde u sell it to me

  • why put grease? why not just clean it cause it gets dirty to quickly with grease.

  • grub screws. not slug nuts..

  • Are you sure you put enough grease? I think you have to put more

  • nice video. didnt mind the length of the video, very informative, makes doing the tranny work much clearer.

  • how often do you have to do this, please please reply thank you

  • i think the screws in the output yokes that you called "slug screws" are called "set screws".

    i think

  • omg that is sooooooo long compared to others

  • r traxxas bandit vxls good i already have a rustler vxl and i was wondering what bandits vxls are like in conparison
