Phil Ochs would have been a WAY better example than Dylan. Och's songs were, in my opinions a lot more powerful and politically charged, and he was way more original than Dylan could have ever hoped to be.
@MsAnarcha Phil was a genius, and certainly more of a "protest" singer the Dylan, but as Ochs himself said "I came to New York to be the best singer in the world, then I met Dylan and decided to be the 2nd best"
@arru23 Just because Phil sold himself short and made Dylan into something of a fetish doesn't mean that he should be neglected. I agree with MsAnarcha. As innovative and ingenious as Dylan was, the "protest" song was just a phase for him; for Phil, it was a way of life that he never abandoned--indeed, after a mugging took away his voice and disillusionment and depression took away his songwriting inspiration, he continued his activism, until he finally lost the will to live.
@mathiasb82 We sent advisors to aid the French, then the French pulled out, and it became "our war", like I stated 1959. 1964 was an increase in troop levels and combat forces. Not the beginning...
How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky, how many years must one man have before he can hear people cry. How many deaths will it take till he knows, that too many people have died. the answer my frien, is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind. :)
I love that song. I just got a peter Paul and Mary record yesterday I think it was like called 10 years of peter pual and mary that was the first song on it. :)
she is talking, when they declared war in Vietnam...which was in late 63, early 64...before that, they were only advisers...Prior to the US France was there from 1945 on..
@Cbermani3 This is strictly a technical legal term by the way. Only the congress has the power to declare war. They need to vote on it, no conflict has been voted on since our declaration of war on Japan. We didn't even declare war on Germany in World War II...
With the verbal diarrhea that this young chick displays, she has most definitely a future in politics.

Vietnam started 1959! 1959-1975. so early 1960's is not before vietnam its just before the protest.
