i would prefer a bezel mounted clip, that way you can clip it to your hat brim, and it keeps the keys away from the lens and you would also know if it clicked on accidentally, shinning up in your face.
1st Nutnfancy vid which got me hooked. Been daily carrying this light for over a year now and it's awesome. Be aware the tailcap gets accidentally pushed if you pocket carry. This fact really hurts this otherwise awesome light. Unscrew the head a little and it solves the issue but defeats the purpose of one handed operation. If you can look past that issue it's a great light. Wish they'd fix it by making it harder to press or more recessed so it's not so easily pushed down. Thanks Nutnfancy!
Google "Zodiac Engineering Preon" and take a look at the mod they do to Preon Clicky tail caps! Gets rid of all the complaints people have about the Preon.
@nutnfancy I have the high CRI 2AAA version, and love the light a lot, but the clicky does somewhat disappoint me with the rattling. I hope they fix it. Check out Spark if you haven't. I have been picking those up lately, and love the whole line.
nutnfancy! Sound the alarms we've got a problem! (Maybe) I ordered the Preon 2 and customer service said that "CPF8" was a members only promotional code! They were hesitant to honor the code but said they would for this particular order. Just wanted to keep it real and let you know whats up man! Didn't mean to stir up trouble!!!
That's a nice little flashlight. But you just can beat a Mag! There just outstanding low cost flashlights and the company does it's best to keep it's product American made! As a former prison guard, can attest to the 4 cells awesome source of protection in a jam!
It might not be something I carry around. But there will always be a Maglight in my trunk and next to my bed!
@shortwavecolt "It might not be somthing i carry around" see thats the thing, having it on your person (wether it be gun, light, knife, multitool or whatever else) having it on you is whats important, and with a teeny light like this everyone can have one.
Hey Nutn, if you ever get a chance, check out the 5.11 ATAC PLX. I am a big fan of the Preon 2 and got the Atac for Xmas. The only issue I had with the Preon 2 was that it tended to slip around on my pocket when clipped on due to its smooth texture. The ATAC has a bit of a rough textured edge that keeps it in place and man is it bright. Check it out if you get a chance. ;)
I actually dig the pocket clip on my stylus pro because I reversed it and put it on the middle of the light so I can clip it on the brim of my hat as an instant headlamp.
I listened to your awesome video... and bought one within minutes... I hate you... well, not exactly but you get the point hehe. As we speak, the're 45$ directly on 4sevens website, and with coupon CPF8 it's 41.40 with free shipping. Cheapest I found! Can't wait to have it in my hands and THANKS for this awesome video ;-)
I just got my preon II in and it is amazing it is personally my first edc flashlight. Right now you can get a Preon II is from amazon for $43.00 with free shipping.
My preon II accidentally went through the washing machine and the dryer (1.5 hr. total torture time) and it still works perfectly. I buy aaa cells in bulk from Sam's...as far as I'm concerned I'm done with Surefire.
My only concern is how much damage the emitter might have sustained from shock and heat. (heat kills LEDs)
@IASOU2005 what heat setting was the dryer on when this happend? I dont think you can buy a new emitter head and im not sure of this but if the led goes out there is a full 10year warranty from 4Sevens I would think that if they didnt replace it for free it would be cheaper than buying a new Preon II.
@BBgunmaster67 I think it was on the medium setting,..and I'm surprised but it looks like no real serious damage was done. Still bright,..no water leaked in, and just to be sure i cleaned all the contacts, orings and threads.
My clicky switch on my Preon 2 sticks real bad (when clean) when I tighten the button cover peice down tight. I have to keep it a little on the loose side. It also turns on in my pocket occasionally (very occasionally) Any thoughts on how to remedy these issues? Other than the issues I just mentioned it ROCKS!
@SwitchbackOutdoors just loosen the emitter head 1/3 of a turn and you should never have a problem with it turning on in your pocket. Im not sure if nutn says it in this vid but he has said the exact same thing.
@BBgunmaster67 But... Butt... My clicky switch! I hate twist UI's. That does work though, BUT I can't help but feel like I shouldn't have to do something like that to fix a problem 4sevens should be correcting. All they need to do it make the clicky switch more flush with the body of the light.
@SwitchbackOutdoors yeah they could maybe counter sink the switch, that way accidently turning on the light would be nearly impossible but the Preon II is too narrow for a switch like that, But maybe they could make a UI that allows you to lock out the switch like you click it 3 times and then you can turn the light on and cycle through everything and this lockout automaticlly re activates after 1 min. I think that would be a good setup for a edc light like this.
@BBgunmaster67 The preon's deffinitly to narrow for a counter sunk switch. I'm talking about a happy medium. In between counter sunk and protruding like it is. A little more elevated than flush I guess is what I'm trying to say. That's an awesome idea on the lock out UI! Good stinkin brother. I'm having a blast bouncing idea's off ya. Thumbs up for youtube.
LOVE THIS LIGHT!! although I had a battery blow up inside and glue itself in along with the rear cap, this was with the batteries that came with the light and it happened with in 3weeks or so of getting it. had to use a barrel brush to clean it out, seemed to clean out when battery acid was dry vs wet, still expect an hour of brushing!
@renzo260 You can order it from their US website with free shipping or from their new polish-based Europe site, I believe it is 4sevens.pl Only extra costs are VATs or other taxes you have to pay to get it over your own border.
Couldn't resist the killer "Black Friday" deals on the 4sevens website. Christmas is early for me this year. I hope its all you crack it up to be Nutn.
Just ordered a blue Preon 2 and a red Preon 1 (for my mom). Got them for under $33 each on 4sevens website (current store discounts plus nutn discount code). Can't wait until they get here!
I Just ordered a Black Preon 2 of Amazon. Can't wait to get it. Too bad I'm poor and used Super Saver Shipping so it won't be here until December 8th... :( I want it now!!!
Thanks Nut'n for the great review. I own one of these because of you, my friend. Never knew about 4 Sevens until I saw your review. My new favorite EDC flashlight. Brightest, lightest, and smallest I've seen.
So I had been carrying my preon 2 for 3ish months and it stared auto dimming it's self. I replaced the cells and same problem. Then it just stopped working all together. I called 4 sevens they had me send it in and within 2 weeks it was back. Something to do with whatever regulates the output anyway they made it right. And everyone I spoke with was great!! Excellent customer service.
Here is a data point for this light. Survived the washer/dryer test with flying colors! Wife put it through the washer for a 1.5 hour cycle and then the dryer. Came on with no problem. No obvious defects. Will go with me everywhere as always!
Bought it PFI sells them at a couple of bucks off and the nutnfancy coupon code essentially gets you free shipping. Handling wasn't Amazon quick but it arrived at my place within a day of being shipped. Currently using it for work (flying) and as advertised it fits inside of the pen slots on my flight suit. It's was a little tight at first...so to speak... Works great so far.
For the past year I've been running the Browning Mircoblast as my every day carry light. Although it is bright in close quarters, it just simply doesn't compete with the Preon 2. Nutnfancy, you have just sold another Preon 2 for 4Sevens, and I cannot wait to incorporate it into my every day carry load out!
I think you should rename the title to "world's best edc light." I got one about a week ago and am loving it. Light weight and thin. And the lo/med/hi modes all have useful outputs. Great job 47's!
I'm sure you have been corrected nutn, but this is not a forward clicky light as you stated a few times in the vid. If you can soft-press when the clicky is activated it = reverse clicky.
why have you not done a review of the Fenix LD05? i just ask because you reference it a few times in the vid. i was between that and the the preon 2 and ended up with the preon. thank nutn
@nutnfancy I bought the preon 2 in stealth black with the R5 led three months ago and havent had any problems until now. In the last week i have pulled the light out of my pocket two times and went to turned it on, but it hasnt turned on with the first click. Have you had this issue maybe it was just a glitch, i changed the batteries to see if that fix the problem, not sure yet. I ordered this light by the recomendations of you nutnfancy and the candle power forum threads on this light.
what would you reccomend to keep in your pocket. Its 5" so isnt that bad, but i need something which is just as powerful but more towards to 3" size. Would you carry a 5" torch in your pocket.
great light. but it would be better to access the high mode instently. i mean lets face it, if you need a flashlight, you dont want it on low mode. it would be cool if you could reverse the modes. hmmm.
Nutn i have been looking for the preon 2 online it is sold out every where once a black or blue one shows up I have to snag it fast this must be a incredible light because everyone seems to want one and it's almost august of 2011 love your reviews though keep them coming
@mikeresto1623 I just ordered titanium version from OpticsPlanet, they say they have the black in stock as well. Use coupon code opiv5of for 5% off :)
@mikeresto1623 Actually I apologize, I got an email from the today that they are now out of stock and should be back in 5-10 days, wish they would have reflected that on their site :(
Having some major problems w/ the Preon 2, clicker doesn't work correctly after a month. Hopefully their customer service will take care of me, bought it from PFI guy.
Nutn, I know you mentioned the Preon 1 in passing in this review, but I wonder if you could say whether or not you would recommend it? I'm considering getting one because I like all the features of the Preon 2, but my EDC system needs something shorter in form factor, hence I'm considering the Preon 1. Thanks!
@nutnfancy hey, have you guys seen the hexbright kickstarter project? pretty impressive fully programmable light. he's putting an accelerometer in it even... I'm not sure what the barrel diameter is, but really hoping for a weapon mountable option...
So I got mine friday, and I've had the stylus pro since christmas. Yeah, the Preon 2 is cool (love the different modes), but the switch is sticky (never fails, just slow) and often turns on accidentally. I feel something warm in my pocket and realize that it's been on. Now I unscrew the head a bit when not in use. The Stylus Pro never comes on accidentally. I also like the momentary switch when I'm working. Bottom line is that for non emergency EDC, you can't beat the Stylus Pro. And for $20!
Had mine for a week and it had major problems. The light would turn off immediately after clicking on. Then the light would only turn on at the highest intensity and wouldn't cycle through its modes with soft presses. Sent it to 4sevens for warranty repair and they replaced the head on the light and sent it back. No problems since. If you do end up sending in the light, make sure you take the batteries out, as they will send it back to you without any batteries!
Dude-I spent like 3-hours today or so watching and writing notes from your videos (e.g. backpacking gear review, your, Fenix LD20, and now this). Geez, thank you so much and you're videos are amazingly informative. Thanks!
Hello Sir, Got mine yesteday as an early birthday gift from my bride 2 be, Love it so far. I was amazed at how much light this little thing can put out! It lit up an entire field! Thank you so much for recomending and reviewing another great product! I can always trust TNP to turn me on to the good stuff! Thanks!
well 70 bucks is quite a lot for a pen light no matter how you see it (its the price in canada).. almost borders the ridiculous :) non the less awesome light
@nutnfancy just a small point, if you really want to showcase the relative brightness of a flashlight in your reviews... you need to take the camera off of auto iris mode and lock it in at a specific level so it will not adjust. i suggest that you put on the light and point it at the wall, then adjust the iris somewhat low so that the viewers can see the brightness of the first light. then the brighter light will show its true difference.
I finally got one today in the mail, and it is completely awesome. I'm going to order at least one more. Thankyou Nutnfancy for the review, this is the best small flashlight I've ever used. My EDC lighting needs are now sorted.
Now at 3hrs 15 min... light is still running. DIM.. but you could still walk by it in complete darkeness.. I would estimate its about 1/2 as bright as the low setting. Pretty amazing.
I just recieved my Preon 2. Four Sevens was fast, after I ordered I got a message the same day that it had shipped, and it got here fast too. I ordered on Friday morning, and I recieved the light on Mon morning.
The light is bright and seems very well made. I just did a run time test using some NiMH Duracell 1000mAh AAA batteries. I put the light on high and at 2.5 hrs I am still getting usable light about as bright as the low setting. Very impressed. Thanks NFP for the discount coupon too.
I reacted the same. But doing some research, remember I said the S2 version is rated in ANSI lumens and not OTF like the R5. Because it is a different way of measuring brightness, ANSI lumens would always be lower than OTF.
Also, keep in mind that the S2 is the later version of the R5. It was an improvement LED that sparked some controversies about the tint..
Anyone recommend running those disposable Lithium E2 batteries by Energizer (or any other band Lithium batteries), or those generic alkaline batteries from RadioShack, Costco, etc. on the Preon 2?
I loved this Light and carried it every day but the pocket clip will bend really easy and with that smooth finish it just slipped out of my pocket somewhere, so now some lucky ass hole has my preon 2
S2 is the newest version and is around 7% brighter then the previous R5 version. 4Sevens is testing their lights with a more strict ANSI rating, which will make the light lumens decrease on paper. But the S2 version puts out 7% more light roughly off paper then the R5.
One thing about this form factor is that it(prepare to laugh) Doesn't fit well in the mouth! I'm looking into getting a Mini just for this reason, Instant hands-free!
Once again, you have a review on something I need. I have the Streamlight Stylus that I use at work. (machine maint) Lots of dark cabinets, and some lighting sucks in areas of the buildings. 24 lumens just isn't going to cut it anymore. Great light tho, just need more light. I'm gonna check this light out. Looks like it will fit right in with my work EDC. Thanks nutn, don't stop these reviews and awesome vids!
Hey, what's everyones (hopefully nutn or veri's!) opinion on the quark mini AA2 as opposed to the preon 2 for EDC? It's a few dollars less, and comes in a colour that I like, yes I know it's only black. But the places i'm looking the good preon 2 colours are out of stock. 2nd type of cool! It seems to be relatively small, nice and light, and a more capable light, with a GREAT looking pocket clip.
Just received my preon2 today. I really like it but there seems to be a small issue with the switch. When I push it in sometimes it sticks and does not pop back out. I disassembled it and reassembled and the issue is continuing. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?
DUDE! just got mine from firearmspro and this thing is friggin BADASS man brighter than any flash light I've EVER had and Very light. I have the S2 Edition, so is the S2 different from the one your reviewing here??? I think the lumen are a little less on the S2Ed and the lo beacon is diff. But Overall rating 5/5
S2 LED is 7 percent more efficient then the previous R5 version. 4Sevens is using new ANSI Lumen ratings which are different and more strict. The Preon 2 S2 will be around 7% brighter then the Preon 2 R5 version (but not on paper due to more stringent testing).
@kamendez38 From what im hearing is that the S2 is brighter. Refer to page two and look at the comment beactivelife replied to me. But if you dont have one of these Preon 2 Pin Lights is well worth the money, Go Get It!!! I gotta go buy new batteries for mine from toying with it so much :) Im getting another one as soon as I can. I have the Black and Titanium but I wont the All black. THANKS NUTN FOR THE REVIEW! *CAPUSSSSHHH*
Nutnfancy, thanks for your videos. Lot of lessons being learned through your channel. Keep up the great work!
So I received my Preon 2 in the mail today from an online store, and unfortunately, they sent me the wrong one. I got one with the S2 LED instead of the XPG-R5 which is what was actually stated on their webpage.
4-7s sent me one with defective threading. I told them by email and they mailed me a new one and promised to refund my shipping costs when I mailed the defective one back. I got the new one after two days and is perfect.
What could be a better EDC than the Fenix LD20? Well, if I'm in a coat and tie, the Preon II is a lot better. It looks like a pen, weighs nothing and is crazy bright. This one is a yellow S2.
The Streamlight webpage for the Stylus Pro shows it now has a C4 LED that puts out 48 lumens w/1,033 candela peak. I was thinking about a 4Sevens Preon 2, but w/an EDC light carried for nite non-lethal SD, I don't want to have to click thru a bunch of functions to get to 50 or more lumens (and possibly click past it). A single function light is like a DOA HGN for SD (vs having to deal w/manual safeties when the SHTF). Thin is great for IWBing at 8 o'clock.
That depends... If you like, or can live with the longer (bit still very compact) Preon 2 then I recommend that one. Much more light output, longer runtime, more capability in many situations. However, some prefer the smaller Preon 1, or even the Preon Revo. Good luck I love my Preon 2.
@psalm143 Am I really the only one who IWB (inside waist band carry) their flashlight??? It's a great, low-profile method for those of us who wear only a shirt and pants/slacks in an office environment. As long as the flashlight is under 5.5" long and 19mm wide, I don't even notice it, even while driving. I IWB the flashlight behind L hip and a Mini-Griptilian (lt blue w/SS blade -- very PC), behind my R hip. They don't attract attention even in the anti strong-hold known as the SF Bay Area!
You are probably not the only one. I usually carry mine in my pants pocket, but I have also carried it IWB a few times too (depending on what I am wearing).
I'm pretty sure i caught the flashlight disease... I'm mainly into knives, but i recently bought a Quark AA2 Tactical S2, and now i want one of these babies... Thanks Nutn and Veri
I tell ya Nutn...you cause me to spend soooo much money and i LOVE it! Just picked up my second Preon 2 and have on order from Home Depot (had to spend a gift card from Christmas) a Quark 123 Turbo and Quark Mini with the gift card i got them FREE! I agree 100% 4Sevens lights are by far some of the best out there right now. Thanks very much for your time and effort in the reviews and thanks again for helping me spend my money! LOL
I bought this light and love it, but have 2 criticisms. 1. With front pants pocket carry, the light likes to switch itself on. I "lock it out" by twisting the head but that adds a step and delays deployment in certain situations. 2. I would really like either a High->Strobe bezel setting or for the strobe to be the 4th click (instead of the 7th). If you have to disorient someone in a defensive setting, seconds do matter. Other than that, you can't get anything better for EDC-Non Defensive.
This is the hole in my EDC that needs to be filled. I've got the knives covered (keep buying more, the addiction has me in it's hold), got a fire starter on my keyring, but no light! Watched TheDishD's review on the Preon 1 and guess I'll have to get a couple of each. That should have me covered for any EDC situation. Thanks for the review Nutn, great information.
hey i got me a preon 2 at first glance i was totally impressed. but then i noticed that the batteries shake in the light to the point that i can hear them.that was a downer i manged to fix it by sliding a piece of paper around the batteries. but soon after the light began to be unreliable not turning on when i clicked it. sometimes high mode just does not come on.has any one else had issues like this?
Day 2 of carrying the light. I can't stop flipping through the different modes, it's fun. Also very amusing showing it to people who aren't gear heads. The strobe mode has amazed quite a few people.
Damn you. You called it the best. And now I have ordered one. Why oh WHY do I keep watching your videos :) Thanks for the great reviews - even if a lot of them are costly to me. I'm sure I'm going to really dig the light.
@noudo25 Recently they have changed from rating "out the front" lumens to the American National Standards Institute lumens which rates after the light has been on for 3 minutes while using the factory-supplied batteries. 4sevens includes alkaline batteries as opposed to lithium so the lumen ratings will be a little lower.

@renzo260 You can order it from their US website with free shipping or from their new polish-based Europe site, I believe it is 4sevens.pl Only extra costs are VATs or other taxes you have to pay to get it over your own border.

PointersRock 3 months ago

TheWesman45 8 months ago in playlist Lighting Products by Nutnfancy
Had mine for a week and it had major problems. The light would turn off immediately after clicking on. Then the light would only turn on at the highest intensity and wouldn't cycle through its modes with soft presses. Sent it to 4sevens for warranty repair and they replaced the head on the light and sent it back. No problems since. If you do end up sending in the light, make sure you take the batteries out, as they will send it back to you without any batteries!

Gregk82 9 months ago
@nutnfancy just a small point, if you really want to showcase the relative brightness of a flashlight in your reviews... you need to take the camera off of auto iris mode and lock it in at a specific level so it will not adjust. i suggest that you put on the light and point it at the wall, then adjust the iris somewhat low so that the viewers can see the brightness of the first light. then the brighter light will show its true difference.

Thanks NFP for the discount coupon too.

s2 or r5?
i orderd the s2 version but i kinda wish i would have orderd the r5.
however the s2 version is lower lumens but it puts out a brighter light by 7%??
themegajosh09 10 months ago
@themegajosh09
I reacted the same. But doing some research, remember I said the S2 version is rated in ANSI lumens and not OTF like the R5. Because it is a different way of measuring brightness, ANSI lumens would always be lower than OTF.
Also, keep in mind that the S2 is the later version of the R5. It was an improvement LED that sparked some controversies about the tint..
dahgutone 10 months ago
@themegajosh09
In other words....
OTF measures brightness by how bright will it last in a few seconds
vs
ANSI measurement by how bright will it last in a few minutes.
Also, even though manufactures' say that a light can put out 160 lumens, doesn't mean you will always get it.
The moment you turn on your flashlight (even on fresh batteries) you lose brightness.
I'm not sure how they test it, but that is the basic concept.
dahgutone 10 months ago
Anyone recommend running those disposable Lithium E2 batteries by Energizer (or any other band Lithium batteries), or those generic alkaline batteries from RadioShack, Costco, etc. on the Preon 2?
dahgutone 10 months ago
on 4 sevens website it only says 120 lumens on stealth black why???
themegajosh09 10 months ago
@themegajosh09
The 120 lumen one is the S2 emitter.
The S2 gives off 120 lumens ANSI rating while the R5 gives off 160 lumens OTF (out the front).
Don't know much about it but i know that the ANSI ratings are rated lower than OTFs.
So comparing the S2 to the R5, I've heard that the S2 (even @ 120 lumens) is brighter than the R5.
BUT there is a different tint.
Some don't like the S2 tints some don't care.

Ivebeeninyourmom 10 months ago
ive found out that there are different versions of this knife.
s2 ed is 120 lumens. and i think reg. is 160
starcraftluver62 11 months ago
@starcraftluver62
S2 is the newest version and is around 7% brighter then the previous R5 version. 4Sevens is testing their lights with a more strict ANSI rating, which will make the light lumens decrease on paper. But the S2 version puts out 7% more light roughly off paper then the R5.

DUDE! just got mine from firearmspro and this thing is friggin BADASS man brighter than any flash light I've EVER had and Very light. I have the S2 Edition, so is the S2 different from the one your reviewing here??? I think the lumen are a little less on the S2Ed and the lo beacon is diff. But Overall rating 5/5
MrNCCountryBoy 1 year ago 5
@MrNCCountryBoy
S2 LED is 7 percent more efficient then the previous R5 version. 4Sevens is using new ANSI Lumen ratings which are different and more strict. The Preon 2 S2 will be around 7% brighter then the Preon 2 R5 version (but not on paper due to more stringent testing).

I can't decide whether to get the Preon 1 or the Preon 2 for EDC. I am not rich, so I can only get one. Any thoughts Nutnfancy and friends?
Kinjaffa 1 year ago
@Kinjaffa
That depends... If you like, or can live with the longer (bit still very compact) Preon 2 then I recommend that one. Much more light output, longer runtime, more capability in many situations. However, some prefer the smaller Preon 1, or even the Preon Revo. Good luck I love my Preon 2.
psalm143 1 year ago
@psalm143 I am worried that if I get the Preon 2, it will be too long and cumbersome in my pocket ><

Thanks for the review Nutn, great information.

why does the 4sevens web site rate this light at 120 lumens not 160? Which is it?

@noudo25 Recently they have changed from rating "out the front" lumens to the American National Standards Institute lumens which rates after the light has been on for 3 minutes while using the factory-supplied batteries. 4sevens includes alkaline batteries as opposed to lithium so the lumen ratings will be a little lower.
