usually people clap because the runway of the island of Madeira is one of the most dangerous in the world, i not agree because people are only saved when the plane stalled and people come out unscathed
now I remember, I went to Madeira a few years ago and when the plane landed everyone clapped, me and my cousins were pretty confused as to why they clapped
@DonalMW I'm a pilot, and you're absolutely right in that we wouldn't hear any clapping on the flight deck. But if I'm not misunderstood, then the clapping is a sign of relief that they (the passengers) survived the scary landing (Madeira does rank in one of the extreme approaches/airports)
most people do that spec on charter think people have done that for a longtime maybe it is to thank the pilot for a good landing but i think it is silly because the pilot just doing hes job like everyine else :P
@fluglehrer This airport is rather new, but the old one was one of the most difficult airports to land in the world, he was too small and the airplanes had to invert the thrust on the engines even before touching the ground. At those times we really felt the pressure and stress over the plane and pilots.
If go to madeira and lands ina aicraft clap your hands because your pilot has 3500 hours of experience and lands on visual, no use any help navation only her eyes and the isntruction of the controller, also he use a VOR after landing but in those all the pilots who landing in madeira, lands in visual.
haha! that happens all the time (clapping at landing)... aaaanyhow.. i was at that airstrip ones..it was windy and awful, and when the brakes went on we slid really far! we had five meters of the runway left before heading in the ocean=S

don't know. but it seems to be a speciality of austrians to do that, and that for decades already. guess they are happy to be on firm ground ;-)

@miguelmpn My both comments should be together... :P
Hope you understand the claps :D

@fluglehrer On the ancient airport only the best pilots could drive planes to Madeira they needed a good curriculum to be able to pilot to Madeira
So every time an airplane lands safely the passengers show gratitude and respect to the pilots, by clapping.

@fluglehrer no it's not special for austrians, it seems to be generally done on chartered/package travel flights

Usually, it's only the people who knows that it is a tough airport would clap.

people just clap in charter flights, and its impresive that the landing field is over the highway, and close to the sea.
