I suppose that nowadays, many people won't learn these songs 'from the outside', meaning that they hear it on CD or in a choral performance. I guess that many people learn it 'from the inside', by which I mean that they learn to sing it themselves, singing in a choir, studying one special part (SATB) and finding out their place in the harmony of the piece. I don't know whether that's good or bad, but I'm happy to have learned this music 'from the inside' first.
