When did Lindsey Nelson started announcing for ABC? All this time I thought that he only did any kind of Sports Announcing for CBS. And where was Keith Jackson at the time of this game?
@Jiltedin2007 in the 70's, notre dame had a 1 hour highlight package of each game which was syndicated throughtout the country. In new york, the show aired on saturday nights at midnight and the broadcaster for these shows was lindsey nelson. This particular game aired on ABC with keith jackson.
@TheTzdope Oh, I see. Just like the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins also had their 1 Hour condensed games shown here in Los Angeles. And being a Huge Trojan Fan, I remembered the Trojan Condensed Games being shown on Sundays at 4 P.M.(Estimated time for NFL Football Games to be finished completely here in the West Coast) with Stu Nahan as their Announcer.
I remember in the pre-cable era when there were edited replays of Notre Dame games on Sunday mornings. Lindsey Nelson did the play-by-play and when they cut to a later portion of the game he would say "we move now to further action."
@dzych2 it's Lindsey Nelson, not Lindsay lohan, as new coach Kelly, kindly put it on a cold 9 degree day on Dember 12th, 2009. He was the voice of Notre Dame football before NBC. He has announced for pro football too, mainly on the highlight reals. He was ND's radio broadcast announcer for 20-25 years, since the Parseghian era (I mean Ara).
Casper was the best blocking TE of all time. Fast foward to 1980 and he seals the corner against the Chargers for Kenny King to run for an 89 yard TD.
Started watching N.D. on Sunday Mornings in 1967. Shame that the NCAA had restrictions on how many times college teams could appear live on T.V back then. I love the Irish
Nelson was the voice of the New York Mets for many years, did "Monday Night Football" on the radio, numerous Cotton Bowls for CBS, etc. But he always said doing Notre Dame brought him more national recognition than the other stuff combined.
Once he was walking down a street in Green Bay, Wisconsin alongside Vince Lombardi. A group of young boys saw him and said, "Look, it's the Notre Dame announcer!"...completely ignoring Lombardi! In *Green Bay*!!
The guy in the red shirt who picks up the football after the TD and runs away with it is my dad's buddy Dan Szakaly. I'm pretty sure he still has the ball.
Lot of people say team, team, blah blah. But that touchdown really felt like Notre Dame scored: the football team and the fans scored as well as those watching were all one. Look how they mugged him and Penick didn't push them back like some other players.
nice pro career Penick had as well......he didnt have what it took plain and simple & his accomplishments against 18-21 year olds never got him very far.....one run dont make a career and the following year he was highly shown up by the great Anthony Davis who was 100 times the man he was both on and off the field
That is my point. I didn't feel like Eric Penick scored but Notre Dame. Whereas Anthony Davis game, it was all him and the USC fans just watched. That man persona of Davis really showed but hard to get behind because of his lack child qualities. I think the shortcoming of Penick is why it is easier for fans to get behind though very frustrating to support as you mentioned.
The only person who was all man but somebody that a fan can get behind is definitely, O.J. but with disappointments.
your an idiot. First off what kind of pro career did Anthony Davis have? I thought so. As for Penick he severely injured his knee in 1974. Back then your career was pretty much over when that happened but he did have great success off the field and for you to make the coment you made is just stupid
lol i must have missed something somewhere........ive heard of the Anthony Davis game 1000's of times over the years but never did hear of the "Penick game".....lets face it you are one of those "Irish Die-Hards" who never quite did grasp things....the 60's & 70's have been over for a long while now so get some new parts for your fuckin` head.....comparing the two fo them Penick couldnt have been a pimple on Davis's ass
you know jerry'sboys uscum fans like yourself amaze me. When you're program was down from 1990-2001 you couldn't even get 60,000 fans in the coliseum. And you will be down once again when the ncaa penalizes your asses for paying players. ND meanwhile will come back to the top
I would hope that SC gets theirs, but I don't think the 2A will do its job. SC is in the second biggest media market in the US and all the networks and colleges can see is money. I HATE to admit it, but money will trump ethics.
I remember ARA saying it was a little misdirection play. A coach who had enthusiasm, knew the x's and o's, and let his assistants coach. Coach Weiss please take note.
I was 10 years old living in Knox, Indiana when this game was played. At that time to me this was THE biggest football game in my lifetime. The crowd was the best I have ever seen a crowd. It was the equal of the 1988 Miami game crowd. What a great season this was. After this run I literally ran around the house yelling and screaming. What a great memory!
What a great run. Thank you Eric Penick! I met you before the 1974 Purdue game. My father's friend, Paul Shuda, who knew most of you players, introduced me to you! Thanks again!
If it ain't Lindsey 'latter-on-in-the-same-series-of-downs' Nelson. Love!

Notice that all the ND highlights feature OLD helmets, clothing styles, haircuts, TV technology? Wonder why that is?

After the game, Penick was asked why he didn't do the usual celebrating, dancing, etc. after he scored. He said, "Because we're Notre Dame."
