If it was known that she was allergic to any kind of nuts, she should probably not have eaten the cookie. Also, those with allergies to anything that can cause severe reactions should first avoid anything that might contain such an allergen like homemade cookies, and also have their doctor prescribe them an Epinephrine Auto-Injector (aka an Epi Pen) in case they do come into contact with such an allergen, and have a severe reaction. The Epi Pen will stop the reaction.
@outatime1955 oh lucky ducky im allergic to like everything, sunscreen, anything perfumed, heaps of food preservetives/additives, all native australian plants, bees, insects, and most soaps, and thats only naming a few im allergic to heaps of stuff and have severe asthma... it sucks but u try to live through it and get on with life and have fun as much as possible :)
I found it strange that, in the beginning, Katie asked Sarah what was in the cookies...and Sarah responds, "Just normal type things"...but later, when Katie's dad asks Sarah if there are walnuts in the cookies, she says yes. Why couldn't she have told her friend that so Katie would not eat the cookie?
I have had asthma since I was 4, and I know how scary it is not being able to breath normally, and no matter how much somebody tells you to slow your breathing down its so hard because you are panicing
How can you not think you're gonna use the skill? I've used almost every one I learned-except cricothyrotomy.
I'm a paramedic, an EMT-P. That's an Emergency Medical Technician with the maximum amount of training in Prehospital Care. They use the term EMT to mean EMT-Basic, EMT-Defibrillator and EMT-Intermediate.
It's not as big a difference as some people think. Every EMT is important to the team.
It gets on my nerves when paramedics act like they're the only ones who matter.
They don't have EMT-Defibrillator anymore, but I always think of it b/c I worked in cardiology and was an EMT-D for years.
My grandpa died from a massive heart attack. I thought I'd be able to save other people from that same fate if I learned everything I could about cardiology.
That's not exactly how it worked. I basically discovered that the doctor was right, and my grandpa probably could have lived longer if he didn't insist on continuing to have a diet high in salt consumption.
She needed advanced life support (ALS) techniques. Intubation by mouth or needle cricothyrotomy.
A nasopharyngeal airway isn't the same as intubation. Intubation is when you pass a tube through the vocal cords and breathe for the patient by bag valve mask and ambu bag.
Not that they did a bad job. She lived, so no harm was done.
"She was so young, she had so much to see". WEll guess what, not everyone lives to be aduylts. I lost a classmate my senior year in an auto accident. He was a good friend to everyone and is no longer with us. I wish this same thing wouldnt happen to anyone else.
I know. In my area some idiot in a hurry over took a slower truck going over a hill in a Ram 3500 and destroyed an oncoming minivan killing an entire family of 6. He, of course. Wasnt at all injured. I wonder how he lives with himself now..
i have asthma 2 but my parents don't have enough money to pay 4 all the treatment i need..i had a asthma attack at school p.3 on Tuesday and it was pretty scary with all the kids in the gym looking and staring at me lying hopelessly soo i went to the er.. and they took me right in because i was really close to dieing.. there was a lot of wheezing coughing and gasping and it felt lyk a was breathing threw a straw.. but luckly i made it.
You're not alone, I've had asthma since I was 5. But things like inhalers are great measures to help you, and pretty much every insurance will cover at least in part, an inhaler prescription. If you're not that bad, the doctor will tell you to just take a puff of inhaler before physical activity. It's worked wonders for me when I was younger.
I have asthma as well I had an attack 8th grade in September during activity around 11:00 in morning the poor sub that was in my group during the walk he was close to losing it along with my friends the last thing I saw before I blacked out was the paramedics carrying me to the ambulance and I saw my entire grade looking at me they we're scared I had to spend all of 8th grade in the hospital few months for medicine and the other few months for observation i carry an inhaler so I am good to go!
my little sister and 2 of her kids are all allergic to bees and shellfish. we all know how to use the EPI pens. my 10 year old was allergic to peanuts as a baby but thankfully she outgrew it. now she would live on peanut butter if i let her.
Ok, this is my almost death replaying, save exchange the walnuts for hazelnuts and place dorm neighbor as life saver! Scary--and that's almost 20 years later. Creepy....But I'm happy I'm alive today too!
So true--it's annoying but life saving. I have the same allergies as the girl above--with a few extra. It's always best to have personal responsibility involved in this.
that happen to me in school once.....i shared something with my friend at lunch and by math class i had trouble breathing and all they did was tell me to go to the nurse.....a teacher...i think his name was Mr. Trumpeter...took me to the nurse but i passed out in the hall and woke up in the hospital...
I love the .5 of Epi...unconcious for that long & with anaphylaxis that bad give the full 1 mg. You cant really OD on epi (Im sure you could if you were really freaking stupid), so be sure you give enough the first time.
My rule of thumb is, pt talking = .5
pt unconcious = 1.0
Granted protocols say .5, but I call my medical director and get the authorization for 1.0 and the benadryl.
it really wouldnt take that much epinephrine to throw somebody into a disrhythmia. as with most drugs we give on the ambulance, its better to titrate the dose to the desired effect than to give more than is needed and risk an od. they say emt, but i guess this guy was a paramedic becuase he talks about starting an iv, i dont know why he didnt try epi, could have been a big mistake on his part.
emts come in 3 major categories, with some sub-categories. The major ones are emt-basic(b), emt-intermediate(i), and emt-paramedic(p). emt-B's can only do basic things, bandage wounds, cpr, use an AED, and the like, things that dont require as much training and have little chance of harming a patient. emt-i's and emt-p's use more advanced techniques, such as IV/drug therapy, intubation, and some other procedures. Basically, emt-p's have more training, so they are able to do more.
i live in ny york and out here you have to go to skool for a year and a half to become a paramedic and only paramedics are allowed to give you drugs or stick a needle in you
Um...that's not true for Cali. I had an allergic reaction and the EMT's were the first one's there, not the paramedics. They stuck me with tons of needles--including some in my ankles.
I dunno if anyone answer you so I will. It has to do with the level of training and what state you're in. In PA, medics give drugs, read cardiac rhythms, and intubate. EMTs do the basics.
True! That's why if people have a severe allergic reaction and the EMTs come they CANNOT give an Epipen that will save the person's life. The person either has to have it with them already or pray to make it to the hospital on time. A little 9yr old girl with an allergic reaction to nuts died b/c the EMTs & not paramedics arrived. Spiderweb 127 ur so smart!
Certain EMT levels are not able to use an EPI pen. The lower levels of EMT can only put the patients personal EPI pen in the Patients hand and HELP the patient inject themselves.
I agree with that, but you will lose your Certification and be banned from getting it back for a long time! OR THE PATIENT happened to wake up enough and then injected her self with the ambulance's epi pen..... Prob wont fly but worth a try!!
What about consent then? I've had the reaction and it's painful to the point you can't do anything really to help your situation. So would verbal or written consent be okay?
The legal side and the moral side fight each other here! if the PT is awake and you can fake helping them with the EPI pen I would, In a croud of people and nobody was around that legally can push EPI its a personal call! Chance losing your status or watch them die! And FYI i do have experience with this! My wife has been clinically dead 2X and both in a medical setting while being exposed! I say F the laws, but its not always black and white! I would do whats needed, but i cant condemn others
CardinalsSoftball20. our school was offering us epi pens for people allergic to bees etc. i went and saw my doctor to get one but the government said no because the last time i got a bee sting they didnt give me adrenline!!! i am down as most severe the school nurse cant touch me im allergic to: Penacillin,Norfloxin,Alopahrim,Buscopan,Keflex, bees and wasps!!!

Allgood thanks for the reply! I know you probably get alot of requests but I think I asked awhile this awhile back. I have an 18 year old nephew that knows nothing about diabetes and the dangerous effects of insulin shock. I know R-911 has episodes about that and was going to use it as a guide to showing him what to look for in someone who's got it...Any episodes on that would be great!
All the diabetic segments are pretty much the same, kids call 911 when their diabetic parent goes into insulin shock. I'll add my favorite one "911 Gotta Get to School" from episode 317 to the request list for you, unless someone else requests a different diabetic segment.
Allgood...first of all I'm sure that all the die hard R-911 fans are extremely grateful to you for your efforts in posting these videos because their great ! I was looking and see that periodically you do add a new one here and there so I guess the question is how often do you add episodes and if possible are we allowed to ask if you have a certain one that you can post that we're looking for ? You've been very nice and the R-911 efforts are appreciated !
Well I'm a college student, so I usually upload a few on my school breaks (which is about every two to three months). In the summer I usually do it when I can get a break from work. You can request segments, the ones I upload are the ones that get the most requests. There is another user (BeatleMoe) who has recently started uploading segments.
An EMT told me a tip once about Epipens. They're made to work in any direction, so they have extra medicine inside so that you get the right dose no matter how you hold the pen. So if someone has an allergic reaction when they are out in the wilderness away from rescue, sometime you can cut open the epipen and extract another dose or two. Hopefully, rescuers will be close enough that that won't be needed, but you should know it's an option if it is needed.
I know what these people go through. I have a serious allergy to Peanut Butter. I've had to go to the hospital 2 times and both times..if my Mom would've waited 5 minutes longer to take me. I would be dead. She's my hero! <3
Wonder if the rescue victims from Rescue 911 are aware that their episodes can be watched on You Tube, as well as that people can chat about them. Personally, there's nothing I would like better than for Katie herself to post a comment or two right here, and tell us what she went through during those awful moments, and what it felt like. It would comfort her to know others out there have had similar experiences. She's a brave girl!
A few people from segments have found them on here and commented. Some have even asked me to put their segments up. Most people think it's cool to see their 15 minutes of fame on youtube, but I've had a couple of people ask me to take their segments down.
One girl said she was self-conscoius about what happened to her and was offended that people were commenting and criticizing her family. I did honor her wish.
It would be great to hear from Katie how the re-enactment differed from the actual situation. Or if it was realy her in the re-enactment or someone to play her.
It certianly looked like the real Katie in the re-enactment!
My goodness! You had to deal with abuse from a teacher's aide? Did this happen when you were in school? If so, what happened to her, was she ever jailed? I have to say, there was a teacher I knew from junior high who was later found to be molesting students with disabilities, and he's now in jail (luckily I wasn't one of his victims, since I have a disability).
As a child, I had an abusive stepfather who would occassionally asphyxiate me, so this episode is special for me, getting to learn an experience of someone else who endured suffocation or the similar likes of it, when you know what it's like.
Actually, he is now deceased, he died of liver cancer almost a decade ago. He was never put in jail, the authorities never found out in time. I still forgave him.
thats why if you have an allergy you should always question what is in food BEFORE you eat. She shouldve asked the girl if the cookies had nuts.
ash3227 1 year ago 2

I have food allergies too. My advice: Ask what's in it first, then put it in your mouth. Never the other way around!

She was obviously suspicious when she asked what was in the cookies. Just another sad example of an avoidable mistake.

My dad has the same reaction to nuts. He has 15 minutes to get an Epipen injection or his heart stops.
snakinapen 4 years ago
An EMT told me a tip once about Epipens. They're made to work in any direction, so they have extra medicine inside so that you get the right dose no matter how you hold the pen. So if someone has an allergic reaction when they are out in the wilderness away from rescue, sometime you can cut open the epipen and extract another dose or two. Hopefully, rescuers will be close enough that that won't be needed, but you should know it's an option if it is needed.

it sure does make you glad that EMTs have EpiPens now. I just forget how long ago this actually was when the Epi's weren't nearly as portable

I'm glad she was not allergic to the chocolate chips in the cookies! I love chocolate I would hate being allergic to it.
TudorRose85 4 years ago
She was allergic to the nuts in the cookies, not the chocolate chips.

I know what these people go through. I have a serious allergy to Peanut Butter. I've had to go to the hospital 2 times and both times..if my Mom would've waited 5 minutes longer to take me. I would be dead. She's my hero! <3

And the real problem is peanuts are in all sorts of foods that people would never dream contained peanuts!!! :-(

Most people think it's cool to see their 15 minutes of fame on youtube, but I've had a couple of people ask me to take their segments down.
allgood2000 4 years ago
Why would someone want you to take an episode down? Did you honor their wish?
billybassman21 4 years ago 2
One girl said she was self-conscoius about what happened to her and was offended that people were commenting and criticizing her family. I did honor her wish.

If someone involved in a segment requests it to be put up, do you move that request to the front of the line knowing they were the one(s) in it?
itsalleternal 4 years ago
Yes, but sometimes I just send the file to them and let them upload it if that want to.

Yeah Katie is a brave girl I have allergies indused asthma I'm allergic to dust pollen

It would be great to hear from Katie how the re-enactment differed from the actual situation. Or if it was realy her in the re-enactment or someone to play her.
It certianly looked like the real Katie in the re-enactment!

I had a woman in Elementary school
that was my teacher's helper and she was real
mean and abusive She would try to hit some us
including me and my friends She almost hit me upside the head with a paddle
She forced me to eat tuna fish I hated tuna fish as much as I hated her
lizzykat2 4 years ago
My goodness! You had to deal with abuse from a teacher's aide? Did this happen when you were in school? If so, what happened to her, was she ever jailed? I have to say, there was a teacher I knew from junior high who was later found to be molesting students with disabilities, and he's now in jail (luckily I wasn't one of his victims, since I have a disability).
tkunzcold 4 years ago 2
You have a disability too me too So What did your step dad do to you Did he like hit you or push you down
lizzykat2 4 years ago 2
As a child, I had an abusive stepfather who would occassionally asphyxiate me, so this episode is special for me, getting to learn an experience of someone else who endured suffocation or the similar likes of it, when you know what it's like.

I'm glad you're okay Is your StepDad in Jail
lizzykat2 4 years ago
Actually, he is now deceased, he died of liver cancer almost a decade ago. He was never put in jail, the authorities never found out in time. I still forgave him.

He said the more they gasp the less oxygen they get. That is why it is dangerous to hyperventilate.
