Glorify the war? There is no glorification in war. You watch the Bastogne segment of the Band of Brothers...that was only the tip of the iceberg of what our troops endured. That battle happens to be the bloodiest battle of the war. The miniseries only tries to share with the world the sacrifices that were made for freedom. Go visit Normandy or the cemetery at Luxembourg.
They did not glorify war at all. What they did was share the sacrifices that many young Americans and Allied forces gave for the freedom from a continent living in tyranny of the Germans. If you think giving your life as many did is glorification then you need to read the history of WW II.
Other than their what they did during the war the thing I admired most about guys like Compton and Winter's is their humility. These guys deflect the credit that they deserve and are quick to praise other vets.
it's amazing how humble he is. maybe what they did wasn't as horrifying as storming the beaches of Normandy, but my god, they pulled off some incredible feats. i'm here to tell you that i'm not worthy of licking the bottom of that man's boots, but i would love to shake his hand and try to express how grateful i am for all he, and the rest of Easy Company, have done..
The Men Of Easy Company, 506 Div. 101st Airborne May Not Refer To Themselves As Hero's But Simply Regular Folks Doing What They Believed Was The Right Thing, Answering The Call In Their Country's Hour Of Need And Simply Doing Their Job. I Couldn't Agree More... They Don't Need To Say It, For Their Actions Speak Louder Than Any Voice, Any Word Could Ever Begin To Express.
Check out Brotherhood of Leet at my youtube channel - a re-imagining of WW2 dramas like Band of Brothers as if they were set during the 8 bit wars of the 1980s where Nintendo and Sega are waring nations.
Are you kidding me??!!?? They are currently enlisting NEW RECRUITS in their 40's and they continue to UP the age limit. My best friend's father is in his 60's and is over there RIGHT NOW! Wake UP! A person's usefulness and ability to make significant contributions DOES NOT end after the 20's!
IWouldnt diminish what the 101st did. But I love Buck fr saying it. Needed saying. My dad was W/612th TDs attachd to 2nd Inf Div & others. Set record for most continuous combat by US Division. Then hit the Bulge. BTW, my Dad got Unit citation, they HELD at the bulge.(Those not massacred by Pieper on 1st day) 101st got best equipment, best R&R & the best training. Other GI's often got crap. The 101st was in & out. Others got out if dead or maimed. So hat's off G.I.s. & Buck for saying it
@hidefsteve - Ok smartass, listen up! I turned both 19 and 20 in Viet Nam in 1967-68 with 2nd Bn 5th Marines near An Hoa. As a 55 year old Chief Warrant Officer 4, US Army, I served in Iraq. Here's an epiphany for you, warrant officers can serve on active duty until age 62. I retired at age 61 with 35 years service. I would have made over 40 if I hadn't gotten out for a few years. As to calling me a liar, how about I rip your head off and shit down your neck!?!?
It is difficult to make comparisons. I was a Marine in Viet Nam and a Soldier in Iraq. Which is worse, jungle or desert? Normandy or Okinawa? Khe Sahn or Fallujah? To borrow from Charles Dickens, "they were the best of times, they were the worst of times."
So you were in nam in the 60s and iraq in 2005? Lol nice math there buddy. Even if you were 18 during nam, You'd be in your mid 50s by Iraq. Right....Where in history has a middle aged man fought in a war?
don't you mean most colonels/generals are middle aged men, cuz there are alot of middle aged men and if most of them were generals we'd probaly have more generals then privates =)
All I can say is any American who puts his or her life on the line for my safety is a hero. I don't care if they fought in the Europe, the Pacific, Korea, Vietnam, Afhganistan, or Iraq. I thank all of them & I think that is what Buck Compton was saying!
Now there's an educated response dumb-ass, i will say Semper Fi to any fellow warrior that I choose to idiot; you got a problem...deal with it punk ass!!
Buck Compton is a real hero, soldiers liked him, he and Lipton were the actual Easy Company Commanding Officers during Bastogne. God Bless You Lynn "Buck" Compton.
You have watched Band of Brothers too much.. Many more soldiers were in that war not just them you see in the series. Everyone who jumped into Euroupe to fight was a hero.
@fucookie So your saying that the ones who did make it through arent heroes? I think that every person that jumped out of a plane, ran across a beach, sat in a tank, drove a supply truck, used their medical knowledge to save or ease the suffering of the wounded, basically anyone who had anything to do with the war effort are heroes. Some were greater heroes than others. To be able to continue to engage the enemy without knowing whether you will live takes incredible courage and strength.
I so agree....TO DEDICATE OR SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES, FOR THIS COUNTRY, is remarkable. And for these guys, who went thru hell , still stuck together. THIS GOES FOR OUR TROOPS NOW, GOD BLESS THEM, WE MISS YOU, LOVE YOU, AND WE THANK YOU ALL, PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.
RIP ALL MEN OF EASY COMPANY, 101ST AIRBORNE, WWII VETERANS, AND ALL WHO SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES FOR THIS COUNTRY. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
@fucookie real heroes are anyone who has the guts to stand up for what they believe in, with or without aid. the ones that died are just the unfortunate ones.
@L1trex both are casualties of the war, both have also suffered and i believe those who died and those who lived have both done their part for their nation and thus the living and the dead are all heros.....
@kerojis the point he's trying to make is that all the soldiers that made it home got to live the life after the war, had a family, got a job, and got to tell their stories. but the ones who never made it back didnt get a wife, family, job, and they didnt get to tell our generation wat they went through. the realy touching thing is that the ones who made it home to see there families again lived a life without the guy he once shared a fox hole with and fought next to.
@kerojis also, the memories that were cherished with the heros today are not as strong when the soldier who fought isnt telling it straight to you when they didnt make it home.please under stand
You need to read up on some history. I can see the argument for the Battle of the Bulge but to say that Easy was dropped in the worst shit is simple, well you can't say that. I don't know maybe watch The War if you don't want to read, that does a good job of showing all aspects of the war.
Of course but to claim that they were dropped in the biggest shit on the western front is just dumb. Nobody can really claim what battles worse but I think you can say that the Hurtgen forest and other engagements hold their own. Also people see to forget the war in Italy and North Africa.
Did you read my comment on top of this page? I think that defines my view. Shit, my father was with the 78th Infantry Lightning Division during the Battle of the Bulge. He will tell you he deserved the Medal of Honor LOL... All these units were made up of heros whether in Europe or the Pacific.
What are you talking about? Your comment at the top of the page has nothing to do with my comment to Del1010. He stated that Easy was dropped in the worst shit of the Western front, I disagreed. I think his point was created just by watching Band of Brothers and that he wasn't making an informed opinion.
My initial comment that you commented on a day ago was directed at Del1010. My second comment was directed at you because you said that the battles Easy and the 101 was involved in speak volumes for them. I said yes but you can't claim that they saw the worst of the western front.
As for the Western front; we can pick this apart all day long. From "The First Special Service Force" & "The 10th Mountain Division" in Italy. The first units storming Omaha Beach, 101st, 82nd Airborne, 17th Airborne, during Normandy, Holland, Battle of the Bulge. The list goes on!
There were many "Band of Brothers;" the 506 A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I all saw heavy combat. However, so did a number of other Divisions. This YouTube video just deals with a member of the 506.
