Larry stated that he was a guitar player. He started playing bass at the age of 15 because his mother needed him to accompany her while she played piano. He thought this was only temporary. This is why he holds his right hand like a guitar player. Then they found themselves needing a drummer, hence, the thumping and plucking provided the percussion. It was out of necessity...WOW. Inadvertently revolutionary...SMH...THE MAN.

Just listen to "Release Yourself" on the original 1972 release- yes, there are players who are techically more profficient (perhaps) but you have to remember that Larry Graham was the original funk/slappingbass/dude. He invented the whole genre! When you go into Guitar Center and hear someone slapping the bass- it's all because Larry Graham invented it- no offense to Wooten or whoever.
