I've seen a different, more effective version of the lye scene, in which Eddie Grant lies on the floor kicking violently, holding his throat with both hands and staring silently at Paulie.
This version here has a lot less impact than the one I saw.

I guess i dnt kno much about poison. First what was it that he put in his coffee? Lime? N what did it really do? Made Eddie Grant jump outta his chair n freak out running? I never understood that part.
@bighector1977 He put lye in his coffee. Lye has the effect of melting proteins and is used in caustic solvents. Most people who survive drinking it are never the same afterward, unable to talk or even drink water for the rest of their lives. Its also a painful way to die. What I never understood was how folks who drink it don't feel it in their mouths before swallowing. Drano is full of lye, probably what Paulie used.
I saw this movie when it came out in 1984 and never anticipated what was about to happen. I knew it was getting late in the movie, but expected someone to get shot, not poisoned. Even though it is foreshadowed in the beginning of the film.

great movie and Mickey could've been our generation's Brando but he didn't want
it. Sign of a true artist - doesn't care about the business side. You can see
actors like Depp have copied much of his mannerisms and style. They dont
make movies like this anymore where "character" dominates. The ending could
have been better: Charlie cutting a deal with Eddie that as long as he stays alive,
the tape will never make its way to the Feds. Similar to The Client...
