Such sheer musical beauty! It's beautiful, absolutely. I thought it could have done with taking the tempo a little faster, but perhaps not. With the sentiment of the duet, it's fine at that speed and gives a perfect serene ending to the opera which is otherwise relentless (mostly).
Ravishing music! It sustains even this rather slow version. But the staging ... please! What's with all this slow walking past each other? It would be more meaningful and less distracting if they just stood still and looked soulfully at each other. And with such beautiful women performing, the camera could just give lots of closeups. But this is all quibbling. The music is beyond words.
Love, only Love. Soul, only Soul. Heights of the Highest Heights. These two Lovers, forgotten their evil ways, remain in Monteverdi's Divine Music as immortal demonstration of human Love.
Could somebody please post Ottavias entrance aria from the same production? It is breath taking! Lyrics and performance and dynamics in perfect harmony.
Poor Anne Sofie... what's up with that awkward suit? She sounds fabulous as expected, but she really could've been one dashing smashing Nerone (like her Octavian) with better custume designers.
Anne Sofie, with all her fame for her awesome power and beauty in singing, guilded aristocratic family background, does not have that Diva-flushiness. But she is ONE. As guest applying for visa, arrived at the embassy on her bicycle, in jeans, ordinary pullover and a helmet. Talking at close range, you see this beautiful, famous lady who is humble in her ways, and yet, one feels an enormous authority in her persona, commanding respect and admiration. Can't help but fall in love with her.
what a miraculous piece of music this is...I once witnessed Jaroussky and Kirkby sing this duet uring a concert in the Netherlands. Odd-looking as lovers, but still when I think of that night...shivers down my spine! One could hear a needle drop for the first 10 seconds afterwards and then the spectators just went crazy!
this is exquisite. i used to find von Otter's voice a bit cold for my taste way back when she first became famous, but she quickly won me over with her impeccable and elegant artistry and subtlety of emotion.
The staging is a bad idea. The voices are lovely.

most important thing in this duet is well-matched voices which they have.

So, so so wonderful. Magnificently well matched voices and a wonderfully plausible and beautiful couple. Yum, yumm....

I love Minkowski but he is hit or miss with his tempo. This is too slow. Nice singing though

This is the best singing of this duet on YouTube.

Unfortunately the soprano is flat quite a lot, and her semitones are too small.
djhooten 2 years ago
They're both sopranos, asshole. And, what are the semitones flat to? Other semitones, perhaps? You're an idiot.

I'm sorry, but tihs is not good.
Where is the tempo? It seems a lullaby, but without any love emotion between characters.
They sing too much operatic to be baroque singers.
elcaji 2 years ago 4
I agree. Nothing happening between the characters.

Even when this is in Monteverdi's Orfeo, who really was the composer of this duetto? Cavalli?
idaspe 2 years ago
I think it's generally accepted to be Ferrari's work.
