  • These are the same kind of arpeggios that Joe Satriani uses on "The Power Cosmic"... I was wondering where I recognized that sound from. Cool stuff!

  • i am an extreme metal head and just got into jazz about a year ago all i knew how to play for chords was power chords etc. now that im into to jazz and can use licks like these in my playing and apply my music theory knowledge it is a great thing thank you scott henderson

  • Really Cool, A Monster !!!

  • Great lesson - Joe Satriani has been using these arpeggios for a while also, they're in in the power cosmic and the mystical potato head groove thing

  • Scott is great and he has a deep musical bag but the whole arpeggio thing is so done at this point. Obviously Scott could avoid them and still have something to say on the instrument but hordes of less talented shredders latch onto arpeggios and thats ALL they play. I saw a guy get booed off stage last week at a local club because he was running arps endlessly over cover tunes.

  • @bowiemott You clearly aren't a musician. But if you are, I'd like to start by saying you're very ignorant. The base of all melodies are arpeggios.

If you listen to jazz, thats all sax players do is outline the harmony with arpeggios and passing tones.

Clearly when you see the word arpeggio you automatically picture a 13 year old kid in his room playing metal.

  • @Polyrthyawhut Do you really thing that someone like Charlies Parker just plays arpeggios ? You can't be serious.

  • @Polyrthyawhut Also, here is the definition of arpeggio according to Merriam Webster though any working musician (even any academic musician) would (or should know)

that arpeggios are the "production of the tones of a chord in succession and not simultaneously". Arpeggios are chords when all notes are played together NOT melodies. Melodies can span chords and aren't constrained by the notes therein . This is music 101

  • @bowiemott You have to quote a dictionary? Alright lets play your little of semantics. Arpeggios I.E Chords ARE the basis of anything Melodic. I never said Charlie Parker only played arpeggios. What do you think 95% OF JAZZ Players do when they are playing over changes, they think of Arpeggios IE chords tones for Melody.

I never said arpeggios ARE melodies, your stupidity is amazing. Especially how you like to read into stuff and put words where they clearly are not.

  • @Polyrthyawhut Your massive oversimplification of "what jazz players do" is sufficient evidence to conclude you have absolutely no clue. Bug someone else.

  • @bowiemott For sure. I guess in all your insight and overwhelming musical intellect you still had to quote a dictionary to try and hold your end of the argument.

Fact is I'm RIGHT you are WRONG.

  • Scott's playing here is great as you'd expect, but in addition his tone here is phenomenal.

  • this is the first lick that I learned in a long time.

  • its like a magician showing us how to do his tricks

  • hey scott, i'm stealing that phryg thing! lol thanks, you are a wizard

  • muito bom!

  • Great lesson.

  • this guy has some killer ideas. they can be applied to music too, they aren't just lame exercises.

  • And at 2:32 Animals as Leaders, Thoroughly at Home.

  • 1:34 *

  • Starting at 3:47 it sounds like that one Periphery song, I forgot which one, I wanna say Racecar, near the end.

  • 0:36 "Let's say we're gonna do a minor"

  • Wow I learned something totally useful in like 5 minutes...awesome thanks man

  • This is such good stuff! Its funny how some guys can teach so quickly! Thanks alot Mike

  • This guy is amazing

  • AMAZING TEACHER AND GUITARIST !WATCH HIS OLD INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO LIKE MELODIC PHRASING (A BIBLE!)

  • @loyeti71 Amen brother!

  • i love that guy

  • 1 of my shortest and bests lessons ever

  • Scott has always been cool

  • good guitarists don't need distortion to shred

  • that first fifths idea reminds me of fives by guthrie govan, i likey :) ashamed to say i've never heard of scott henderson before now... but i'm a fan already

  • @kierandoyle1992 Satch's Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing has crazy arpeggios using similar ideas too ; )

  • It'd be an interesting take seeing Guthrie Govan or Alex Hutchings and Scott Henderson playing together.

  • @peacequinto you just named my three favorite guitar players in one comment

  • Hi Scott

IT'S ME ALBERTO DE ALMAR. MOVED TO FT. LAUDERDALE. I HAVE CREATED MUSIC SOFTWARE I WANT YOU TO CHECK OUT BEFORE I MARKET IT. CALL 310-6663671.

  • this guy is VERY educated in musical theories...it's not a fucking wonder that he teaches in a university...he MIGHT just be as good as batio but i doubt that he can play as fast..then again, jazz and blues guitarists don't give a shit about speed..lol..but he's got some cool ideas, techniques and shit...very clean playing..i'd love to be a student at the university he's teaching but i don't have the money...the fees cost about 30 grand per year..i know, boo fucking hoo right??

  • @Nipon76

How can some one compare Henderson to Batio? Henderson is on a whole different level here.

Baito is cool, But he can keep those 16th note linear runs. I'll take what Henderson does any day.

  • come on man..batio has been around way longer than henderson.but yeah, henderson has some cool techniques and is way beyond awesome when playing the blues, as demonstrated in the video. but batio is the only guitarist i've ever seen that has the perfect balance of playing fast and keeping his notes clean at the same time AND still sound musical.but the only thing that mr batio lack is his diversity in his music. (unlike henderson whom i've seen use everything from the dorian to the blues scale)

  • @Nipon76 Seriously, you think Batio has been around longer than Henderson? Lol I could be a dick and start giving my opinions on Baito and name drop a list of other great guitarist, but I'll just say this instead, You like MAB and that's cool, But don't talk about him on a Scott Henderson video.

Yeah those 11th ideas are pretty awesome, next time you're playing something in Lydian just play that Maj #11 idea , gotta love those wide interval.

  • @Phrygian12 i don't look at it that way, man. i think i'm free to comment about anything on youtube. it's not a competition dude, i t doesn't matter who can name more guitarists. and relax man, you don't have to entertain me if you find me annoying. i was just commenting and giving my opinion on something that i see. that's it. even if you don't agree with me, you don't have to be a dick about it.

yeah, those 11th ideas are pretty cool. wish i can use it as spontaneous as henderson though.lol

  • @Phrygian12 id rather listen to jimmy page any time

  • Scott is a master ( Composition , playing and improvisation ) .I did meet him when i was a student ( Musician Institute 1993) and he is such a very cool guy and a GREAT musician ! .

  • @TheAspergerman really, man? are the videos on your page yours? i'd love to hear one of his students play...i'm a big fan of guitars, so...hehe.

ps: wow! you've got to be really rich if you went to the musician institute... (just saying)

  • this sounds remarkably similar to Joe Satriani....hmmmm o_O but nice approach

but his tone is amazing...i love that guitar

  • @axeman1226 Joe Satriani?you have to be kidding me.

  • @AtanasovPeter listen to "Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" or "Power Cosmic 2000" and you will recognize that first set of riffs he was doing, except that he uses his right hand to mute the strings and the left hand to hammer all the notes

  • @axeman1226 man stop talking about LOL GUITAR PLAYER SATRIANI.

  • @AtanasovPeter whats the problem? Satch is a very innovative guitarist, and recognized as one of the greats for a reason. yeah, he's sloppy when he plays live, but his music is very enjoyable and his playing is amazing

  • @axeman1226 man you are making me laugh....Satriani is a LOL rock guitarist.Do you know what even harmony is....i am sick of people without any musical understand talking about things they do not hear.Get into fusion and jazz learn about modal harmony and chord changes then talk this bullshit again

  • @AtanasovPeter you don't have to be a dick about it. i've been playing guitar for 12 years, i understand modes, harmonies, chord theory, and i know he's doin a run of a minor 9 with an added fourth, i teach guitar as my job and i do a good job for a newby at teaching. keep assuming things about me. just makes an ass out of you. . just because you think you know more doesn't mean you have to show everyone how big your ego is. get a life. you obviously didn't listen to what i mentioned

  • @axeman1226 I have listened to everything Satriani ever made and if you seriously compare Satriani to one of the fusion/jazz masters Scott Henderson then don't use what you learned.

  • @AtanasovPeter dude, you totally fired at me for nothing. i was referring to one of his riffs. the first one where he is going up the minor scale and ending on the 9, and then goin up the major scale. it sounds just like the riff from Power Cosmic where he mutes the strings with his right hand and then hammers with his left. thats the only part that sounded like satch. i didn't say his music or his style sounded like satch. damn dude

  • @axeman1226 sorry i was pissed.

  • @AtanasovPeter, See this is what's wrong with a lot of people's attitudes nowadays. Knowing theory and harmony has nothing to do with making good music. Entirely separate things. You don't need to know anything about harmony or scales to make good meaningful music. Will it help you if you do learn it? probably yes but there are stacks of guitar players who know about theory and can't play anything soulful or that touches someone. Wes Montgomery played straight from the heart, no theory.

  • His "Phrygian Arppeggio" ideas sounds like subsets of the so-called 'Augumented Scale'(m3-m2-m3-m2,etc...)

  • wow love him, should def. check him out more.

  • The 5-note repeating pattern that he shows us at 2:17, is he playing that as quintuplets when played at full speed?

  • That fifths idea is GOLDEN! Scott Henderson... I see you.

  • Very nice!

  • 27 people dont know real music...

  • @lestervai how would you define "real" music? I assume from your comment, that real music is the set of all artists and songs that you personally enjoy.

  • themes for the next zelda , thank you scott

  • what guitar is that? anyone know?

  • @lukehuels looks like a fender strat, probly a custom shop or a deluxe judging by the nicer inlays

  • @swanski100

Very deluxe. Scott plays Suhr Guitars.

  • Also, is it just me or do the first four notes sound like a part of the Californication Riff by RHCP? ( When played from A )

  • Interesting, anyone familiar with Message in bottle by the Police with recognise the first three notes in the aperggio straight away.

  • This is actually a very good lesson..Huh from fpe?

  • His tone reminds me of dentine, clean and refreshing with no caffeine..Its okay i guess if you play blues and greens..When your really cooking you what to use your blues and greens..But i prefer to liven things up with something that sounds a little awkward and even embarrassing, But at least it works better than the dentine becoming plain stale and boring after a meal only of blues and greens. If the people didnt bring any blues with them, than im sure you'll give them some to take home with.

  • Scott Henderson is AMAZING

  • BRILLIANT. thank you

  • gimme your strat Scott !!

  • @buzztownblues That's not a Strat. Look up Suhr guitars ;)

  • @Gh0stPreacher I known he uses Suhr strats!! but what a sound !!!

  • Awesome lesson Awesome Guitarist Awesome upload.

  • scott is giving a clinic at my university next week

  • sounds like something tosin abasi would do in animals as leaders

  • i love this guy!

  • i knew there was something special when i saw him with chick corea elektric band back in 1987. Then Gambale stepped in one year later and I was like, "Where's Scott? This guy (FG) sucks!"

Thank you scott for the insight into your world. How's Tribal Tech? How's Gary Willis?

  • I like this guys style, one of the best guitarists around IMO.

  • G-maybe-minor ? :-D

  • This guy is a generous genius. Love him !

  • im glad hes cleared that up this guitar thing was confusing me

  • hot stuff :D

  • Scott Henderson is so creative and sounds so freakin' awesome - what an inspiration!

  • Stealin this riff

  • Scott Henderson is better than blue and yellow.

  • Wow, tha greasy mexican can play!

  • @DarthNader11 THATS RASCIST!!!!! hehe

  • I've been trying to find out how to produce this feeling and I finally got it! Nice...

  • Man Scott is ugly... is that why he doesn't like being videod?

  • @iamyourmumsfriend...OK mr ''professor know it all '' its clearly time for your lesson in life now..whether you like something is subjective (you fav) but talent /skill /ability is clearly measurable...and Scott is clearly NOT in the upper tiers .He plays a style that is limiting..Ron Thal never conformed to one style and Scott could never play 'Guitars Still Suck;' on his best day=Rhapsody didnt say oh well we either play classical or epic neoclassical> thank god

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree It's clear from your comment that you don't know anything about Scott Henderson.

You can search for him playing with Joe Zawinul, Tribal Tech, Greg Bissonette, Victor Wooten, Steve Smith, Chick Corea, Jeff Berlin, et al. He was voted best Jazz Guitarist in past years in both Guitar Player and Guitar World magazines.

Any one guitar player may be unable to play some randomly chosen piece; I am certain that Ron Thal would have trouble improvising over "Giant Steps".

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree You quoted "professor know it all" like it was a title I have applied to myself. Clearly, I have made no attribution to this fable; I don't think I'm better than anybody else - I presented an opinion.

The fact that nigh-on ALL of your ramblings are unintelligible, I am not going to attempt to challenge your flaming / trolling.

About the only thing I deduced from your babbling was that you're not an experienced musician and base your opinions on the writings of others.

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree This is pretty stupid. Why should Henderson change style if he can express himself fully in one style? So what if Henderson cannot play Guitar Suck or Guitar Still Suck or whatever. I doubt he cares about any of that. Henderson has always focused on improvisation, and that's where his strengh lies. Ron Thal is a monster, but he wouldn't be able to improvise like Henderson, especially over jazz harmony.

  • I do this but in the Satriani kind of way, because oh god, he uses it :)

  • Excellent lesson. Instantly useable ideas. Thanks.

  • Very Vai-ish lick

  • @albertmetal93 Where do you Think Vai got his ideas? Your lookin right at him

  • i love this guys' tone, incredible!

  • some of the notes felt like i was getting punched

  • Great, clear, quick explanation. Great ideas. Great player.

  • Just to comment, the lick may sound similar because Joe has a lot of jazz background. A practice routine a lot of advanced players follow (and recommend) is say, 10 mins of scales, ten minutes of arpeggios, ten minutes of 4th intervals, ten minutes of fifths, ten minutes of exercises designed to work on picking, ten minutes of licks or transcriptions. This is especially true of the fusion guys. GAmbale recommended it, Jack ZUcker's Sheets Of SOund is laid out that way, countless others.

  • Didn't Joe satriani have a song that sounded very similar to those exercises

  • sounds like scale the summit

  • Damn this guy is really skilled. *applause*

  • Thanks for the free guitar lesson!! I LOVE Scott's playing.

  • Shit Scott was a part of the music scene long before sachmo and has jammed with way better musicians

  • lol hope satriani won't sue im

  • @LittleV7 I see where your going with this on that instrumental joe did that used those exact phrasings. But, scott is just demonstrating of course. You do understand that right?

  • jesus was more acoustic and satan had to plug in and mess it all up ....

well nice post -really usefull licks and easy to use quickly . cheers

  • Thanks master!

  • Awesome very good lesson!!!!

  • thanks Joe Satriani!

  • is that a carvin guitar? i cant really tell what it is.

  • @clewi1091

    that's SUHR guitar

  • its a suhr

  • As far as the George Benson thing influence....etc. I don't know that one has to have actually listened to GB to sound like him. GB probably effected modern jazz guitar as much as ANYONE...maybe second to West. I think if you listen to ANY jazz guitar...especially the watered down elevator white jazz....you still get that "cool" sound....and let's face it...THAT studio tone came from GB. BUT...every cat out there tries to cop it...even when he's ripping off someone else. THAT cat had it too:)

  • ...and that's where Govan got his "Waves" riff.

    Go Scott, you rule.

  • Satriani's tune around the concept is called "Power Cosmic." Stacked 5ths to build major/minor arpeggios, I think he had that out in the early 90's.

  • the first and second arpeggio is joe satriani famous arpeggio

  • wow i can't believe this is free 0_o

  • he's going to be in my school tomorrow for a clinic

  • @sIash90 your lucky...........

  • Scott Henderson is one of the best fusion guitarists out there. He really has his theory down. Nice video.

  • Like he needs to warm up haha

  • i love that sound.. i find one of the hardest things to do is find ways to pass over or land on a nice flavour tone and make it sound tasty, like a #11.. i have this great book that talks about playing in thirds to accomplish this, i think the fifths sound better because the fifth itself is such a strong interval

  • What book is that?

  • @Gregorypeckory i think its jazz soloing a melodic approach or something like that, by Garrison Fewell

  • Did you know that there were no problems in the Middle East until Palestine suggested to Israel that Jimi Hendrix was better than Jimmy Page?

Even Jesus and Satan used to jam until Jesus said that Bert Jansch was better than Tony Iommi.

In conclusion - arguing over what is essentially the self-expression of a third-party is entirely pointless. It's like saying blue is a better primary colour than yellow.

Remember - in the vast tapestry of art and music, there are only favourites. No 'best'.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend

One of the best comments I've ever read.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend

absolutely the best response to the "who's better" arguments that pollute yt.

Oh yeah, and don't forget that the Hatfields and the McCoy's got along too, until someone said "Joe Satriani > Steve Morse"

  • Yeah, Satan's pretty a pretty impassioned fan of Iommi! In conclusion-LOL!

  • @iamyourmumsfriend well said sir

  • @iamyourmumsfriend Actually Blue is a better primary color than yellow, because yellow isn't a primary color. It's red green and blue. Green and red make yellow. lol color noob.

  • @annunzarizzle Really? Are you being serious? Wow. Just a thought...but maybe Google things prior to making comments? Or, perhaps attain some blue and yellow finger paints and mix them...

  • @annunzarizzle AHAHAHAHAH! Thanks for that laugh. holy shit i hope you were trolling.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend well spoken

  • @iamyourmumsfriend I wish every Youtube comment was as insightful and as witty as yours. Please, post more - this community needs people who research information before preaching it.

    Thanks.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend Would you say that Jesus was a better player than Satan then ? I think Jesus' pinched harmonics were better whereas Satan had the edge with a whammy bar.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend true that..as long as the "artists" are playing for themselves rather than tryin to please i fanbase im cool with them

  • @iamyourmumsfriend : so true. simple, yet, profound.

  • Comment removed

  • @iamyourmumsfriend Thank you to everyone that replied to my initial message - glad to know that many folks are in agreement!

I'd like to apologise if I came across as sanctimonious - it certainly wasn't intentional!

The comment was a hopeless attempt to douse the flames of a fire that will rage on forever. It's this furious passion that sets guitarists and musicians in general apart - which in turn empowers creativity.

Keep debating - just try to teach one another and always learn!

    Rob

  • @iamyourmumsfriend Rob, you have put into words what thousands of people want to say on these clips every day as best you can. I get just as fed up with it all as you do, it's a real brick waller. The best I have seen is a twelve year old kid ( I don't remember the clip but you'll just have to believe me) who put "I don't care who's better than who I'm just learning guitar and I like everybody just because it's so cool". I rest my case mate.

    Col

  • @iamyourmumsfriend i really love that explanation thats awesome

  • @iamyourmumsfriend but blue IS a better primary colour than yellow.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend There has got to be some kind of lost jam tapes of the Jesus/Satan Project I would love to hear them. I'm checking my favorite torrent sites, If I find them I'll post them for you all.

World peace can only be achieved by all nations agreeing that either Hendrix, Eddie or Greg Howe being the very best.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend That was some pretty insightful shit right there. I like your use of the English language, really :p

  • @iamyourmumsfriend You are correct bro. There is no best in anything. Its about contributing legitimacy to the world and keeping it fresh. It is about constant learning and not caring about the negativity meant to inhibit any skill that contributes to the goodness and nature of humanity as it is supposed to be. Forgive me, but it is nice to know someone else actually understands the fact that there is no "Best". But the Jesus and Satan thing was hilarious buddy :))) Very good post.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend LMAO!!

  • @iamyourmumsfriend WELL SAID! It's just kind of sad it has to be said at all.

  • @iamyourmumsfriend I couldn't agree more

  • @iamyourmumsfriend I love the essense of what you are trying to do with this idea, but if that is so, then why is it that one can go down to guitar center on any given day, and sit near the amp section listening to any number of amateur guitarists - many with accomplished techniques - and know, with total certainty, that they are awful guitarists?

  • @SendInTheChickens Better late than never, I suppose - but here's my response!

I guess that to others, what the 'awful' guitarist are doing could be inspirational! However, I completely understand what you are getting at. I'm in no capacity to judge others, but my perception would be that the technique guys are just that - they've mastered technique as some sort of athleticism as opposed to a mechanism that enables musical expression.

To each their own - but technique is a tool, I feel!

    Rob

  • @iamyourmumsfriend Arguably the best post I've seen on Youtube... well played sir.

  • @MrRobGodek Thank you very much; too kind!

I guess it just saddens me that the new generation of guitarists tend to factionalise and become too 'sporting' in that they fanatically support a particular artist rather than the art itself.

By all means, have favourites - I certainly do; too many to list - but I think that you should always be open to everything you hear. Music, speech, noise - it all contains value!

If you don't like something, move on and develop/enjoy what you do like.

    Rob

  • OMG T3H NICK JONAS IS THE BEST GUITARIST OF ALL. G3T OVER IT!!!!!unicornz!!!!!!!! Shut up about comparing guitarists unless it's from a neutral point of view. No body gives a flying fuck about how your favorite guitarist and no one appreciates people saying shit that obviously is untrue and very immature.

  • lll

  • what is it with this guy and dogs?

  • lol

  • Reminds me totally of Satch's Mystical Potatoe Head - all those 5ths.

  • please dont mention snatch-riani in the presence of greatness. its insulting

  • you mad brah? you mad?

  • haha, naw brah, totally seriously. i dont dig snatchriani at all. hes too much wankery

  • wow beautiful. Yeah Ditto on mystical potato - reminds me of that big time.

  • The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing Arpeggios

  • Scott, whatever happened that caused a breakup between you and Gary Willis, its history ! In the holy name of music; we all NEED Tribal Tech, just like we need water, food and vitamins ;-)

But thx for the lesson anyway. You are the best !!

  • 2 words. Chronic Halitosis.

  • that isn'y a les paul, you dummy....that's a strat!

  • It's not a lespaul or a strat its a suhr.
