My Shiba doesn't run away ether but it took a lot of training, I spent over a year letting her off leash and chasing her down to catch her before she would finally listen!
Ours is off leash trained also. I guess were just the lucky ones. Lots of training thats for sure especially to get him on a leash when he was a puppy.
If my shiba got loose(and he has... A few times) he would be gone, and when he gets loose he gets this drunken "come and get me face" and thinks it's a chasing game
we have been able to work with our Shiba and after 2 years she earned the trust to be off the leash. she walks with me around the block and woods. Also loves the kayak
I have a Shiba and she is very good off leash. Love to watch them just run like crazy and then come back. Mine doesn't do tricks, though, she knows she just has to look pretty.
I have a Shiba Inu and when we first got her, she always found out how to get out of the fence, but she'd come back home later. xD
And she can sprint very fast and can climb up rocks that are very high.
And she only barks outside, occasionally, not much, but inside she will grunt or whine when she wants something. :D she is a lovely bunch altogether. :)
after several terrifying times of running away ( up to 7 hours, several for over an hour, and more than a few into busy streets) me and my shiba are also closer than ever. I walk him late at night in new haven and we go without a leash (esp in the winter when the snow slows him down) if we are at a beach or a park, i don't even think about it. he's so good that once when he was improperly tied up by my gf at a store, she came out to find him free, just waiting.he likes his leash now, too.
I've been blessed with a Shiba Inu that also doesn't run away. In fact, if she gets out and I'm not there -- whoever's house it is she'll run right back to the door because she knows I left her there. At home, I let her go out in the backyard with no fence to do her thing. Only time I have trouble is when there are deer or animals that run. Than the hunt begins and I cannot control the shiba hunting urge. She'll come back though after she realizes she can't catch them.
I can't let my male Shiba off his leash - he would run away and never come back. This is the most difficult breed to train in my opinion but they make up for it with great behavior in every other way.
lol, that is soo cool. my shiba inu Luffy, can only go off leash when i'm on my bike. he just follows me. but with out the bike he goes running off. awesome job you did. =D
Thats exactly what mine does people always think he is gunna run away but he always stops every like 10ft or so and makes sure im still there and if i even turn around he comes running back to me.
@mike666maggot Totally agree ive had mine off leash since she was 3 months and she was my only dog at the time but i just used a squeaky tennis ball to keep her attention which i would toss down the paths i walked, at first she just chased it and stood over it then eventually started bringing it back and wanting to play. Now shes 3 and a half years and i just use a regular ball. At first i used the squeak of the ball to get her back until she got used to my voice and now comes on command.
Hahahaha as soon as I saw her about to let him off I'm like, "No no no no you better have a plan for catching that beast!" There's only two ways to catch my dog, one is, using a squadron of 5-10 people, funnel dog into fenced backyard. then it's a free for all. The other is get close and act REALLY pissed off, and hope he gets the message (he usually doesn't)
wow.. i dare not to unlease my shiba , although my mum told me that there was one time , the lease broke off , she run away , and that she couldnt chase her , so no choice just shout at her and look at her , but she did return when hear the shouting.

i would say it all depends how good pack leader you are and than you dont have to worry about dog running away from you . dog will actualy be afraid to loose you out of his sight! danziani congratulations :)
Impressive. If I let my little Shiba off the leash (or if he bolts out the door), he's gone. He'll get the whole, "yay I'm freeeeeeee, bye mommy!!!" The only way of getting him back, is basically to let him tire himself out. He'll come back eventually and then fall asleep on my lap.
im so impressed, my shiba is very well trained but im still too freaked out to let him off his leash. my old shiba inu ran away and got hit by a car and passed away and ever since then ive been so scared. i do have faith in my shiba 'marley' and we have a magical bond but im still scared. they always say shibas cannot be trusted off leash so i never try it. i should try to train him more.

Sheba Inu are best for more experienced owners...very true.
Australian Shepherds are a breed of dog developed in the United States and have nothing to do with Australia (other than the name). They ARE great dogs but typically really high energy, C755 once you move maybe you and your mom could adopt a dog from a shelter...there are many fine dogs needing homes.
is a shiba inu a good starter dog becuz i`m 12 and i might be moveing to australia and my mom said i might be getting a dog if we move plz tell me if it is a good starter dog becuz it my favorite dog
I am sorry but Shibas are not good starter dogs. If you are moving to Australia you should consider an Australian Sheperd, have a look at them. Australian Sheperd are great dogs.
@C7555 honestly, if you were really serious about having a shiba, you would do ok, IF you went to classes with him and learned what to do and what not to do when you train them. it would be a LOT of hard work tho, they are very strong-willed haha
Our Shiba use to always run away, one time for 15 hours we think he got hit by a car. He doesnt run away anymore and still very skittish about traffic. : ) He's great now.

@bcpaulovich hahaha just run em over with a car then they will listen XD we had a jack russel that did the exact same thing till she got hit by a truck now shes really good outside and dosnt go in the street XD
My two shibas will stop and look at you and if your laughing and not paying attention they will run of but if u r serious they will come running back. one time in the winter my white one yoshi gt oout and we flipped cuz our house is by woods we look for him until 12 my dogs ryu also got out that night but he is shy so we juss waited cuz we new he would come ack in the matter of 5 mins. but not yoshi but we got him back dont woorrry
when we let our dogs out everyday they bolt off but as soon as we call their names they come running at full speed to the door ( lol one time i waqs stading inside the glass door and i didnt open it in time and my shibas hit the door ( i have 3)
once my sister let him off the leash.... he ran.... like alot..... like sonic the hedgehog fast..... so i ran.... i ran for like a half hour to some weird ass place till he stopped to pee <_< i caught him, didnt know where i was, and called my parents, and i got in trouble lol
We have a Shiba, and she does great off leash! I can walk her close enough that she's only a few feet away, but we never do it near cars or anything, just on the bike path we walk.
This video was filmed more than 2 years ago. I love my dog even more than I did before and as time goes by I am more conservative on what I do. Nevertheless, she still walks off the leash on beaches and parks. I take her on a leash when we walk through streets.
She is happy, more obedient and closer to me than ever. The relationship is stronger everyday and I have gained her trust and she has earned mine.
@danziani I let my Shibas off leash all the time on hikes or on the beach - I would trust bitches to come back more than dogs but my dog is blind so he's going nowwhere. My bitch just wants to be near me all the time or fetch things for me. The stories about Shibas and running I think are mostly males esp unneutered males with high prey drives.
OK I think we all know theres the risk of the dog getting hit if its off the leash, but just because the dog is off the leash doesn't mean the owner is egotistic. All dogs are different and will behave differently in different situations. I let my shiba off her leash when we r at home but I would never let her off her leash anywhere else because she gets all hyper and doesn't listen but other shibas may not do that, just like they might not be ok off the leash even at home.

My Shiba Inu is very loyal and attentive. However, im not going to risk her life because my ego wants her to run free so I can pretend I'm fully in control of her. My ego doesn't need that gratification. I'm all in favor of letting a dog run where it is 100% unequivocally safe. I am not going to risk her life so she can run around where there is adjacent traffic or obstacles. A Shiba is a hunter and that is their first instinct
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It is not worth the risk to let any Shiba Inu off of a leash for the sake of an owners ego to have control over their pet. If you want to let the dog run, find a large fenced yard. No one can control these dogs instincts always.
not every dog from the same breed is going to be the same! i let my shiba off a leash whenever i'm in areas without cars such as upstate, hiking, camping and at parks etc. she's never run away. even if she disappears for a minute or so she always comes running back.
also, we just got a kitten and they are soooo cute together. it is the best thing i ever did. now she has a little buddy and i don't feel so guilty when i'm not with her.
It will take TONS of patience from me to get my dog trained to not dart away the second I take him off leash. Just this weekend, after he passed beg. training class, he ran away from me and out of the store!!! Thank goodness it was after he graduated LOL
My shiba plays dart games with me when it's time to go, keeping just out of reach. They can be most stubborn. I should work on retrieving as she loves to do in the house but I've tried at parks/tennis courts and she fetches but then loses interest and keeps running!
my shiba ran out the door and ran straight into a car.. he didn't break any bones or anything, but since then, he won't go anywhere near the road, and you can take him for walks without the leash
Is that truly possible??? At every chance my shiba gets she runs away as fast as she can and the only hope of catching her is by numbers. She is such an escape artist, she has found a way out of seven different styles of cages. If you could tell me some tips on training this particular breed that would be awsome. Thanks a bunch!
I have the same problem, but with a pit bull. Our back yard is fenced in, and it took me awhile to figure out how she kept managing to get out, but one day saw her jump on top of the grill and over the fence.
Hi! it`s possible! She needs to be afraid of loosing you! When she runs, you go in the opposite direction, don`t look back so she sees it! If it don`t work, go hide so she thinks she`s alone. call quietly for her so that se has to look for you. Every dog hates to be left alone! Use that feeling in your training!
Love my 1.5 yr old Shiba. We usually put him on rope in the backyard. I do walk him without a leash in our backyard and woods and throw him tennis balls.
He's a wonderful dog. We are very lucky. The 2nd day we had him he did take off for 3 days in the Winter.
Haha, I really want one of these dogs, someone owns one a couple blocks away from my house and it sits outside of its house without a leash and no owner around.
hedrickhmae (21 hours ago) Show Hide 0 Marked as spam Reply | Spam Very cute she looks like a fox. What is this breed like personlity wise? And are they good with kids and other pets? YES to good with kids and pets so i read on 7 diffrent sights
It depends on how old you get them. I've seen shibas that get along with cats, but they'd rather eat most other pets, and as long as the kids are old enough not to pull the ears and tail, they should get along. Look up 'the misanthropic shiba' on google, there's this great website about shibas.
Omg my dog can do the same i let it off when i go for walks and she walks right next to me and doesnt run after after any one and and is very polite to ppl unless i tell her to attack.
Excellent training. Most owners don't realise that in order to have their dog return to them, you need to have a reason for it to do so. You know? Why come back to an owner that's boring and just calling their name. Good show, mate.
my shiba is very unpredictable, some times i can let him off the leash other time theres no chance. i seen a guy have a shiba and never has a leash, so maybe as it gets older its more understanding and wont run like a bat outta hell
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah mine too...also mine kills ANY ANIMAL that is not a dog...its killed at least 50+ animals (mostly cats)...he even killed all 7 of my neighbor's cats!!!!! hahahha great dogs though
HOW THE FUCKING HELL? We can't even let our Shiba off the leash at the dog park, he runs off and we have to chase him for half an our before he needs to stop and take a crap... Oh, we once met these Japanese tourists at Yellowstone, they had a Shiba named Shiro, and he apparently had his own doorbell for the house, could "talk" and tons of other shit. Couldn't prove any of it, though! ;D
My shiba is just like this off the leash. He will run off superfast and ignore my calls if he's sniffing something interesting. Once I have his attention, if i stay positive and eager, I can get him to come back because he knows he always gets a treat.
If he's being a pain or I'm struggling to keep positive through frustration - I have perfected the "stay" command which lets me get to him and get a leash on him.
It's always hit and miss though. I don't think he'll ever come back everytime.
this is amazing.. i really hope one day.. but i would be going crazy if my guy was off the leash... trust me been there.. he doges cars well.. hes just to fast.. to small and way to smart be let off lead.. maybe one day...
watch?v=TdlYo9obYgQ a photo slide off my shiba inu off the leash, just trust your shiba when he feels no fear your band will be much better and you can train them better.
respect for this video love to see shiba's off the leash
i have a 1 and a half year hold shiba inu, last Tuesday y let him off the leash, it worked out fine, i had to do it in a place with no other people or animals thou.
Just posted a vid of my 7 month Shiba male. He is off-leash at every park i go to. It took a lot of training when he was very young but he NEVER tries to run now.
Honestly, when a Shiba or Akita is from poor breeding they are less likely to have as strong instincts as I spoke of below - so if your dog came from a backyard breeder, pet store, etc that could very well be the case. My Akita will listen to every word I say, unfailingly, but if something catches her attention outside, I know that if she were off leash nothing I could say would matter. She has a very strong hunting instinct.
Of course you are taking a risk, just like anything else in life. Walking with a dog off leash is one if those wonderful experiences that is worth the calculated risk to those people who use common sense and who have earned their dog's respect.
It has nothing to do with respect. This breed has been raised for many years to RUN AWAY & hunt small critters. This trait and curiosity is even in the breed standard for Akita Inus and Shiba Inus. Common sense & respect have nothing to do w/ generations of instinct bred into them to WANT to run off & see what is over the next hill. If you chose to do this with your Japanese Spitz breed dog, then lose them, don't go crying to any responsible owners or breeders, they will just say told you so.
Honestly I think this is taking a great risk with your dog regardless of how well trained the dog is or what kind of relationship you have with the dog. This video very well could have been a "Please never let your Shiba off leash I lost mine :(" video. All it takes is a second, not to mention you need to keep other people's dogs in mind as well. Your dog may be trained but maybe theirs is not. So when your dog runs over to the dog and it gets scared and bites don't get mad.
Is the Shiba Inu breed supposed to be particularly difficult to allow off a leash?
We had an American Eskimo we used to take to dog-friendly beaches in Florida. We'd let her off her leash and she would rip-roar-and-snort up and down the beach! She always came back, and without any serious training. She just loved the beach and would swim with me in the ocean. Fun times.
hey i have a shiba and im thinking about training it to be off leash without running away. some say it is absolutely impossible and they get all dramatic about it. but others do it with no problem and their shibas are always off leash. whats your opinion about it? and do you have any training techniques for me? thanks :)
Most people get dramatic when thinking of a Shiba Inu off the leash. Shibas are great dogs. This is a real video and there's no big trick here, Training, patience and create a strong relationship with your dog. That's all. If you need more info, ask for it and I will tell you what I did. Good luck.
I never take my shibas off leash, except once we went to a small island and that poor dog ran and ran and ran. we let them drag a leash on walks but that's about it.
oh, my rat was named Tsuki to, he always walks free when I went fishing with him, and came back when i called him, but he was grey

Australian Shepherds are a breed of dog developed in the United States and have nothing to do with Australia (other than the name). They ARE great dogs but typically really high energy, C755 once you move maybe you and your mom could adopt a dog from a shelter...there are many fine dogs needing homes.

How do you train them at birth to not run away?

is a shiba inu a good starter dog becuz i`m 12 and i might be moveing to australia and my mom said i might be getting a dog if we move plz tell me if it is a good starter dog becuz it my favorite dog

I am sorry but Shibas are not good starter dogs. If you are moving to Australia you should consider an Australian Sheperd, have a look at them. Australian Sheperd are great dogs.

Shiba inu`s are REALLY smart. They're really cute and their my fav dog too!
But be careful, since their so smart, they can easily find ways to escape.
minihillary 2 years ago
@C7555 honestly, if you were really serious about having a shiba, you would do ok, IF you went to classes with him and learned what to do and what not to do when you train them. it would be a LOT of hard work tho, they are very strong-willed haha

The relationship is stronger everyday and I have gained her trust and she has earned mine.
danziani 2 years ago 38
@danziani I let my Shibas off leash all the time on hikes or on the beach - I would trust bitches to come back more than dogs but my dog is blind so he's going nowwhere. My bitch just wants to be near me all the time or fetch things for me. The stories about Shibas and running I think are mostly males esp unneutered males with high prey drives.
subhumanprimate 1 year ago
OK I think we all know theres the risk of the dog getting hit if its off the leash, but just because the dog is off the leash doesn't mean the owner is egotistic. All dogs are different and will behave differently in different situations. I let my shiba off her leash when we r at home but I would never let her off her leash anywhere else because she gets all hyper and doesn't listen but other shibas may not do that, just like they might not be ok off the leash even at home.
HoRsEsPiRiT54 2 years ago 5
Lol. I know a friend who didn't leash his shiba when crossing the road. The dog followed him anyway.

It is not worth the risk to let any Shiba Inu off of a leash for the sake of an owners ego to have control over their pet. If you want to let the dog run, find a large fenced yard. No one can control these dogs instincts always.
lmacorp 2 years ago
actually these dogs are actually pretty loyal when u treat it right.

not every dog from the same breed is going to be the same! i let my shiba off a leash whenever i'm in areas without cars such as upstate, hiking, camping and at parks etc. she's never run away. even if she disappears for a minute or so she always comes running back.
also, we just got a kitten and they are soooo cute together. it is the best thing i ever did. now she has a little buddy and i don't feel so guilty when i'm not with her.

It will take TONS of patience from me to get my dog trained to not dart away the second I take him off leash. Just this weekend, after he passed beg. training class, he ran away from me and out of the store!!! Thank goodness it was after he graduated LOL
girlmystique 2 years ago
My shiba plays dart games with me when it's time to go, keeping just out of reach. They can be most stubborn. I should work on retrieving as she loves to do in the house but I've tried at parks/tennis courts and she fetches but then loses interest and keeps running!

my shiba ran out the door and ran straight into a car.. he didn't break any bones or anything, but since then, he won't go anywhere near the road, and you can take him for walks without the leash
SCHICKHERZIG 2 years ago
Is that truly possible??? At every chance my shiba gets she runs away as fast as she can and the only hope of catching her is by numbers. She is such an escape artist, she has found a way out of seven different styles of cages. If you could tell me some tips on training this particular breed that would be awsome. Thanks a bunch!
tinabobina14 2 years ago 2
It is possible to do that and much, I just have not filmed any of the other things you can accomplish with love and patience.
I have replied many times how to get a Shiba off the leash on other comments. Look for the previous replies, otherwise e-mail me.
danziani 2 years ago
I have the same problem, but with a pit bull. Our back yard is fenced in, and it took me awhile to figure out how she kept managing to get out, but one day saw her jump on top of the grill and over the fence.
saveoursandwich 2 years ago
Hi! it`s possible! She needs to be afraid of loosing you! When she runs, you go in the opposite direction, don`t look back so she sees it! If it don`t work, go hide so she thinks she`s alone. call quietly for her so that se has to look for you. Every dog hates to be left alone! Use that feeling in your training!

It depends on how old you get them. I've seen shibas that get along with cats, but they'd rather eat most other pets, and as long as the kids are old enough not to pull the ears and tail, they should get along. Look up 'the misanthropic shiba' on google, there's this great website about shibas.

Excellent training. Most owners don't realise that in order to have their dog return to them, you need to have a reason for it to do so. You know? Why come back to an owner that's boring and just calling their name. Good show, mate.

Couldn't prove any of it, though! ;D

Devikvampire 3 years ago
My shiba is just like this off the leash. He will run off superfast and ignore my calls if he's sniffing something interesting. Once I have his attention, if i stay positive and eager, I can get him to come back because he knows he always gets a treat.
If he's being a pain or I'm struggling to keep positive through frustration - I have perfected the "stay" command which lets me get to him and get a leash on him.
It's always hit and miss though. I don't think he'll ever come back everytime.

wow i have a shiba inu and when its off a leash it runs non-stop no matter what!
snowyday23 3 years ago
Ok, then I guess my shiba is just the product of poor breeding.
nmkdotcom 3 years ago
Honestly, when a Shiba or Akita is from poor breeding they are less likely to have as strong instincts as I spoke of below - so if your dog came from a backyard breeder, pet store, etc that could very well be the case. My Akita will listen to every word I say, unfailingly, but if something catches her attention outside, I know that if she were off leash nothing I could say would matter. She has a very strong hunting instinct.
Aryylas 3 years ago
Of course you are taking a risk, just like anything else in life. Walking with a dog off leash is one if those wonderful experiences that is worth the calculated risk to those people who use common sense and who have earned their dog's respect.
nmkdotcom 3 years ago
It has nothing to do with respect. This breed has been raised for many years to RUN AWAY & hunt small critters. This trait and curiosity is even in the breed standard for Akita Inus and Shiba Inus. Common sense & respect have nothing to do w/ generations of instinct bred into them to WANT to run off & see what is over the next hill. If you chose to do this with your Japanese Spitz breed dog, then lose them, don't go crying to any responsible owners or breeders, they will just say told you so.
Aryylas 3 years ago
man i agree. you cant control whats in the breeds blood
Feonalilly 3 years ago
it really all depends on the particular dog, the location and the situation. Any dog can bolt.
subhumanprimate 3 years ago
Honestly I think this is taking a great risk with your dog regardless of how well trained the dog is or what kind of relationship you have with the dog. This video very well could have been a "Please never let your Shiba off leash I lost mine :(" video. All it takes is a second, not to mention you need to keep other people's dogs in mind as well. Your dog may be trained but maybe theirs is not. So when your dog runs over to the dog and it gets scared and bites don't get mad.
Aryylas 3 years ago
lol once there was a woman who left her shiba outside a coffee shop without a leash.... it didnt even budge!!! theyre very smart

Beautiful dog, great video!
Fun times.
