nah, it was just standard HDV. 60i. Directly out of the box shooting.

Personally, I've found it as bull. I record HDV on regular mini DV tapes just fine.

the shallow depth of field was only because the camera was literally as close to his face as you see. no more than a foot or so away.

the film look is a feature the canon hv20 has of filming in 24p. which is a large reason i bought it.

and all i really did in editing was brighten, enhance contrast, and add a small blur to it.

You'll need a firewire card -- and vegas can cost anywhere from 200 to 300.

But you can probably get it off of a torrent for free...just don't write it off on your taxes.

No, I don't think Vegas is there yet. Hence the blending. I should have tried shooting at a higherframe rate, even though the blending makes the smoke look nice.

I'm on a Mac so...but my boy has been using Vegas since 2002 and loves it. It actually has better out the box stuff than Final Cut, or at least it used to, don't know bout now. If you use AE it can do nice slomo. We've discovered an undocumented FCP trick for slomo over at the Apple forums that requires little extra rendering and looks good down to 20% on footage shot at 24p. An unheard of feat on my slo slo G4.

Pretty much just shot it in 60i. Straight out of the box if it were -- then went into SOny Vegas. Slowed it down to 0.40 (40% normal speed) -- and then messed with the color and contrast.
