Back in college, my friends got together for a road trip to the Malibu club to see a new band WLIR was featuring from Ireland called U-2. I had a cold and decided not to see them that night at a little dance club on the south shore. A year later U-2 was doing shows at Nassau Coliseum. Go figure!
I loved this station and listened from the first day through the end. I'm really disappointed at the racist comments here. You really missed the point of this music didn't you. It was all about diversity. If a Spanish radio replaced it, it was because that sells better. We all moved on, including these artists. Cherish the fun we had.
I used to work the "dare-line" at WLIR in the 80s. I didn't get paid, but man, was that lots of fun. Did it with some of my high school buddies. And the DJs were cool too. Even put me on the air a few times to say "hi." Man, I miss LIR!
My older brother got me hooked on WLIR in 7th grade... 5 years later, as a senior in high school, they switched DRE .. the music didnt change much with the change in call letters, but the new crew just didnt have the same character

I used to listen to them in the early-mid 70's a lot. With 'NEW and 'LIR those were golden days, like when John Lennon would just drop by to chat in the afternoon.
I first heard this station going to Jones Beach in '83 and i was hooked, i used to pick it up on only clear nights "caused i lived in Staten Island but i looked for ANY excuse to head to Stong Island just to listen! Miss this station.
killing joke ruled back then , pil, apb, blancmange , depeche mode all fun good music , im thinking of opening a club and one night , like tuesday have "007" night and play all cool wave and punk from 78-87
Awesome bands. Awesome club. I was bummed when I missed Belouis Some played there. WLIR picked up bands like U2, Depeche Mode, the Cure and others months before other stations would. WLIR is where you would hear new music/ New Wave music, first.
the best thing about this music is that it scared away assholes and guidos , who to this day have destroyed long island culture , cocaine was abundant back in the early-mid 80s 81-87 it was soooooooo easy to get drunk and laid
i remember at paris ny nightclub a friend of mine and i had foot high mohawks and we were makin out with these 2 amazing blaonds , the guido said "im buying a pair of combat boots tomorra " !! ya had to be there ,, the guy wound up changing his entire persona , a month later we saw him at cbgbs with skinhead and doc martens ,, classic !!
hey man im going to 007 tonight and then malibu nightclub on wednesday for lifeguard night ,, then thrush on thursday , followed by a weekend at paris new york and spize ,,,,i was more of a punk rocker than into new wave but it was fun as hell trying to pick up new wave chicks , all ya needed was a bag of coke and you were in !!!!! i used to live across the street from 007 which would be cool on tuesdays , then thursdeay theyd call it metro700 whcih was guido night
WLIR played a major role in my life growing up. Station literally opened my ears to music that sounded like nothing out there: Depeche Mode, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, The The, Killing Joke, The Clash, and New Order. Amazing station. Pitty this station is off the air and you now have to pay to listen to music these days.
Wow, thanks for this. LIR was the best station! I'm considering a "92.7" tattoo. Just have to think of a dainty lil design. Dennis McNamara was my fav dj. I'd have blank cassettes at the ready for his set. He had a knack for playin' all my fav tunes back to back.
There will never be a better station and time for great music and terrific dj's. Thanks for being there for my teenage years and early 20's. Miss everthing WLIR. My buddy and I used to hang-out w/ Larry the Duck at Planet Earth w/ he bartended w/ his wife i think on fri nites, man he was so cool, he kept bringin out the barfood on the house.
Yeah, Amok, I was there when it was "New Music" then "New Wave" then "Alternative" and when it was WDRE! I still have the original WDRE bumper sticker and Screamer of The Week lists!
I LOVED THIS STATION!!!! I miss their Thanksgiving weekend music marathons! I remember they had changed their call letters to WDRE, but I always preferred WLIR. I used to love Larry the Duck's "Off the Boat" show. When they left the air, I was college radio all the way. WBAU was good back then too for their Tuesday night show "The Hidden Dimension".
I loved WLIR ...what a great time back then... we were the strange ones then...funny now to think of that now no one would understand, but we did. Then we were the "odd ones".
I was a HUGE WLIR and WDRE listener when I lived on Long Island. I grew up in Oceanside and Island Park. I have 7 cassettes that I taped off the station and off of albums. If anyone wants to see the list, email me!
Hey Jane, I would totally love to see the playlist, or even get a copy. I have about 5 cassettes - used to tape them on vacations from school so I had "real music" up at college! reply back!
I don't know most of these stations and there's no way I'm paying for radio. Are they at least playing the 'cutting edge' music? Are they still being dare to be different? I miss WLIR/WDRE. Damn!
WLIR was a culture. What GREAT memories! It's so sad to think it's gone. Please make more of these. It was the soundtrack of our generation - I feel so furtunate to grow-up during this time in music. Thank you for posting these - they are absolutely awesome!!!!
I still have several WLIR/WDRE airchecks. Those tapes (now on CD) are still regular listening in 2008, along with old KROQ, WHFS, XETRA, and other rare 1980s alternative stations.
Believe me, I was angry when they first changed to new wave. I loved rock back then. I boycotted LIR for its 1st year after the change; but then I saw how much fun it was; and how much fun my friends were having with it. The clubs, the humor, the surprises, and the fun it was to search for the rare recordings. It was like a hunt of sorts. I got hooked by year #2. Nothing's been like it since. BTW, I have tapes of the "progrssive" LIR too. To me, they did no wrong either way.
Tell U the truth, I hated when LIR changed. I missed Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, and all the great rock they played cuz they played the SONGS no one else did. It was already different. I didn't like the change although much great alt music came from that era. I have tape clips from LIR 1980 with Zappa. Want to hear them? Message my crazy son on this account he'll get it to me.

I once tried to scam the station by claiming to be Malibu Sue's brother Malibu Lou--didn't work, but they were cool about it. I MISS WLIR!!!!!!!!!

Big 'LIR fan here, having spanish on 92.7 now is the ultimate insult! :-(
'LIR brought the great new wave sound of the 80s which gave birth to the techno sounds of modern dance music!
Long live WLIR!
